Is it still a happy little accident...
Added 2021-06-28 17:16:51 +0000 UTC... if you technically did everything correctly, but the "right way" just ended up looking bad?
I took another Bob Ross painting class this weekend, this time returning to the local one I did earlier this year that produced what remains my favorite painting I've done so far. Unfortunately, I don't think it worked out as well this time around as I'm not really all that happy with how this one turned out. Those background trees just are NOT doing it for me. And this isn't me being overly hard on myself - I followed the directions exactly and they look pretty spot on compared to the instructor's version... I just don't think they work as intended. See, the teacher told us to paint a shape "like a teepee", or in other words a triangle. Now, obviously trees don't actually grow into perfect triangle shapes anywhere other than in little kid's drawings, but I followed along because it's not at all unusual in Bob Ross paintings for certain elements to look kinda bad until he does one small trick or adds in one little detail that suddenly makes everything click and come together. Therefor, I figured I just needed to wait for "the trick" and everything would turn out fine. Unfortunately, we soon moved onto other parts of the painting and I realized the trick wasn't coming.
I actually like a lot of the rest of the painting. I was able to put what I learned about highlights at the Bob Ross Experiance class to good use here. And despite not being super into the final result, I do feel like I learned a few things doing this, and Bob would say that makes it worth it. Still, I've pretty much decided that I'm going to try doing this again on my own and see if I can't get it a bit more to my liking. Whenever I do, I'll be sure to post a comparison here.
