You've once heard a traveler with a dark, bushy beard, a strong nose, and clothes the likes of which you had never seen before, speak about lights blazing with all the colors of creation on the night sky.
"Up North," he had said, "where the land is made of ice, and even God has trouble reaching it."

"It's a bear's," Sancha explains. "I found it near the mouth of a cave. Show your fangs to those who deserve it, cub, and strike true when the time comes. But always know when a helping hand is needed instead, for nothing stains your soul deeper than the blood of the innocent."
Sancha straightens up to her full height. Her head blocks the sun as you look up at her, making a halo around her white hair. "Keep that heart soft, cub."

Adso pauses before neatly arranging the tools back on the table. He points at himself, at his grey hair and wrinkles. "Books, child, are much like people. Time eats at them, and much like people, they grow old and weathered, and the parchments dry and crinkle while the once-proud ink fades. It's our job, my job, to preserve them, to make them beat even the sacrilege of time."
Adso's eyes glint as he looks over his books. "Knowledge, young ${Name}. I copy books to preserve their knowledge, so their words and thus their voices may live beyond us."
