Death Note - Episode 1

Aye! Doing another show with Jax. If you guys remember, he's who we watched Duty After School with! I'll link that series below!

Very interesting to see all this religious imagery going on in the intro! For some reason I'm scared

Death Note - Episode 1

Comments

Same!

Mali

Nothing will ever make me dislike Light lol

Mali

Exactly! Even then, the justice system isn't always 100% accurate so it's not a completely safe source. And who gets to decide what crimes are truly evil. Look at Korea when it comes to drugs

Daniela V.

I always write notes down in a separate app because of this. Unfortunately that does give me the ability to see how long my essay is lol

Daniela V.

Can't stand when I write a long ass comment and patreon trashes it SMH. Anyways I'm here watching this for the first time with y'all. Light is absolutely tweaked right now from my perspective but this is a well regarded show so I'm leaving the door open to agree and disagree with his character arc at various points

mssmercedes

I loved yalls discussion to this!! It's been years since I've last watched this anime (and I've only seen it once, when I had first watched it ... but it was also one of my first few animes lol) but it's definitely bringing me back to how much I enjoyed the concept of this show and I agree it's so complex and interesting. I also love how Jax brought up the whole situation where Light only sees the news, but he's not a detective that has actually seen evidence that these criminals have done what they did so him putting all those names on the death note, some of them may have been innocent or falsely accused but you don't know for sure and now they're dead. :/ I would personally consider it murder bc, even if you're trying to be a "vigilante" (like Light described himself), you're still killing them and, yes, they're criminals who have done bad shit, but jails exist for a reason and I just think that's where criminals belong.

skye

Either Light already had a god complex (b/c his mom is proud of his grades and takes on a subservient role so that he can maintain them) or it became solidified when he confirmed the death note's power. I remember being amazed at the "fast" animation when this first came out. Now it has nostalgic cringe 😂 the music is still a bop

Jess

so glad you're doing the dub!! :D

Mnena

LOL SERIOUSLY, I got a lot of FMAB dub suggestions, I think I'll do that one subbed tho. Imma ask a few homies their thoughts too. Im glad that people are clicking on this within the patreon too.

anthonytoo

I think game of thrones is corrupting your mind lmaoo bc agreeing with him is insane 😭😭😭😭

elle

Same haha hope this garners some hype so he posts more often :D

Oxy Reacts

Yeah i totally get it ! You'll probably attract more people with it also :) The dub is actually not bad at all also (i cannot say the same about FMAB i honesty dont get why people praise it), I just like to watch shows in their original intended languages. It will be interesting to rediscover it in dub and see the little nuances in dialogues ! :) Cant' wait to see more of your discussions and theories as the show goes on !

Mai San

omg i'd totally watch/listen to it! i love watching anime podcasts hehe

skye

ngl i was literally thinking of THAT scene and i'm glad what i was thinking is also what yall were thinking bc i agree it was iconic. i could still play it out in my head even without rewatching the scene (and i haven't seen the anime in years) LMAO

skye

this couldn’t have come at a better time! i just started watching this because i recently became very obsessed with the korean death note musical. i’m only on episode 3, can’t wait to watch the rest with you guys

Cy

Lmaooo I love that my censoring actually worked

Daniela V.

i was gonna run a poll but figured it would take too long since jax and i are doing another show after. I checked a handful of the top anime reaction channels / ones getting good views and most of them did the dub :o

anthonytoo

I was sooo exited to see that you're watching this classic ! Not sure how I feel about the dub (edit : ngl after finishing this ep, i don't like it but whatever it's just my preference), but i'll probably get used to it ! Hope you guys enjoy the show :)

Mai San

i’ve waited for you to watch this for so long, i’m gonna act like the dub isn’t bothering me lol

Sereiiin

Let me know when we making a pod so we can have in depth anime discussions! Lmao

Frankie

I generally do think no one should have that power too, but it's definitely interesting to think about the morality in all of this.

anthonytoo

HAHAHAH yes its so iconic, they are gonna loose their minds :D

Oxy Reacts

Im team light and idc what anyone or any moral police has to say💀

Itami

It's definitely an interesting conversation that's very real. How much trust do we need to put in our justice system to make the death penalty feel just? Why do we get to play God and judge others peoples crimes unless it was 1000% proven without any doubt? I'm always torn because i recognize the justice system is nowhere near perfect and don't trust it with people's lives. At the same time, there was this gas station my family went to for a large part of my life, the owner was always at the cashier, super friendly, would occasionally give me candy for free just because I was a kid. One night someone went and robbee him and decided to shoot him and his wife. The impact on the community was devastating. All of us that lived nearby had so many stories of kindness he had shown us. After that I almost felt it was just. Who was he to take an innocent man's life like that...what gave him that right? Would he do it again if given the chance? It's really not an easy answer which is what makes this premise super interesting. On a slightly lighter note I'll add: I don't think he cares if he kills someone who's innocent. I feel like at the end there it's clear he just wants to send a message. He wants it to be known that if you get caught doing something bad there is someone out there who will take your life for it. He wants to "better" the world through fear

Daniela V.

Yeah I definitely think intent is a big part of it, which is why involuntary manslaughter is a thing of its own. I'd imagine this is like if someone is on life support and you unplug them without consent, it's murder as well

Daniela V.

I'm so glad you're doing dubbed. I have a hard time following subbed anime reactions tbh. Anime is more abstract than kdramas and the language barrier really knocks me down

Daniela V.

Obviously I don't wanna spoil anything so I'm gonna write the quote using initials. "itapc....aei!!" Is it this one?

Daniela V.

I love the discussions this show brings about so I like hearing y’all’s thoughts esp since they’re slightly different ! for me, I think no one should have the power to judge whether someone lives or dies. this show made me think a lot about my moral beliefs in ways I never did prior to. can’t wait to see y’all check out more eps!

imani

Nah im trippin lmao. I'm trying to play the middle here, I'm really just saying I get the anti-hero approach. I feel like it's too easy to write him off as a murderer ep 1, idk!

anthonytoo

imo I would consider writing someone’s name in the death note as murder 😂 especially if it’s done intentionally

imani

that makes sense! I’m getting used to it loll

imani

Dub is crazy ngl :D There is one scene that is iconic in dub tho so excited for u to see it haha

Oxy Reacts

Never saw jax but excited for a colab :D

Oxy Reacts

4/5 channels on YT i looked at did the dub so I figured that was in most demand lol! I hope you can still enjoy though!

anthonytoo

So excited for this!

Mnena

I’ve never seen this dubbed so this is…interesting 😭

imani

Can't watch rn but I'm so excited!!

Daniela V.

you have no idea how excited I am for this!! can’t wait to see ur reactions
