Decision to Leave (2022): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION?!

I really enjoyed this movie! Yesss, I could see what you mean about Hae-joon being dignified! Ahhhh, that makes more sense about the translation issue, too! I really loved the acting in this movie! The microexpressions were so well done! I love a good detective story, so this was hitting all the marks! The mountain climax was sooooo good! I love that “interrogation” symbolism with the head lamp as well! The tragedy of their relationship – what a movie for February, right? 😛 I just loved the little details of this movie – the ending, I agree, stuck with me for a while as well! It was so good! Thank you for this commission and for introducing me to this movie! I really appreciate it!

Loved the reaction and discussion! Really happy to see more K-content make its way into the commissions! 🥰 I’m glad you’ve been enjoying this very particular type of playfulness that I also specifically like in a fair bit of Korean media, there’s this kind of dark and humorous whimsy that is so often infused into the construction of scenes regardless of primary genre. I personally find it really fun to watch media where it plays in this way with my expectations and ability to judge its tone. And agreed, this film is really beautifully put together and uses so much interesting framing. Especially love how often “attraction” is shown via another secondary medium – windows, reflections, mirrors, even the translation app, etc - always a bit voyeuristic and a bit distorted. And I think that links really nicely to the themes of resistance within it! 😆 Specifically, resistance to classification or simplification: Seorae consistently “performs” a version of a femme fatale and then redirects where the narrative goes; and Haejun keeps “observing” but mistakes that for being in control of the narrative. And I love that in the end Seorae denies everyone an explanation. Thank you to Jason N for this commission! 🥰 Looking forward to the next entry! 💙

I'll try to add more thoughts later but I just got through the reaction. So glad it went over well. Just to dive in a little on Seo-rae's comment about Hae-joon telling her he loved her. Hae-joon didn't say the words out loud but I felt like his actions during the confrontation at her house showed her that he did. Seo-rae at the temple said she liked the fact Hae-joon was dignified. Hae-joon's dignity in his own words came from his pride in being a detective. When he found out that Seo-rae killed her husband instead of turning her in he helped cover it up by buying granny another phone and giving the original back to Seo-rae to dispose of. Evidence he could have used to arrest her. There was a slight mistranslation in the scene but after the line about being a proud police officer he said that he "went crazy for a woman and ruined an investigation". Seo-rae gave a slight smile in that moment and I think that is when she realized that he actually loved her. The one thing he was proud of he had sacrificed for her and was now broken. Seo-rae's acting was amazing in that scene and the movie in general. So many slight changes in expression that conveyed a lot, going back and re-watching was great. When the scene was playing out you felt a lot like Hae-joon as you questioned whether her words/actions were genuine or if she was just manipulating him. My two favorite moments were probably that scene and the one near the end where they were both on top of the mountain. Seo-rae started out questioning him about his life since she left. Her headlamp on his face like an interrogation lamp from an ol timey detective movie. When she gives him the phone back to re-investigate the case so he can go back to before he was broken. Even though at this point that is pretty much impossible. She says to him that perhaps she came to Ipo to be one of his unsolved cases. In her mind those cases were the reason he could not sleep at night and I think in that moment she knew where her path would lead. Where afterwards her pictures would stay on his wall and he would lie awake at night thinking of her. So good and so sad. Felt like a good recommendation for Valentine's day month hahah There were a few other small things I noticed when rewatching. In Ipo when they were handcuffed in the car together the first time Hae-joon falling asleep when the other detective opened the door. Subtle but it showed that he was finally able to relax now that Seo-rae had reappeared in his life. Probably have more to add later but I've been a fan of the director for quite a bit. This one, especially the end stuck with me for a while.

I glanced at the title of the post and for a few seconds, I thought you were leaving the channel.
