Heated Rivalry: Episodes 5-6 Fangirl Analysis!

I just LOVE Rose and her scene with Shane is SO good – she’s such a great friend! And yes, Illya being smart but not afraid to ask questions – it’s so great to see that realism with him! Especially since English is not his native language. The show does a good job of showing how Illya has to face the possibility of not being able to go back home - and mainly to his father (whom he does love despite all that he’s done or believes) - and it helps explain why he’s held off on loving Shane openly for so long. That phone call where Shane helps “talk him through” what’s happening was SO GOOD and well done. Ugh, my heart! The world of Danmei and how it’s gotten me into the Cottage Core happy ending for our boys! XD And yes, that cottage was LUXURY. @_@ I lived for all the moments in it, though. Scott and Kip were SO GREAT — and wow, for them to have the kiss and be in the open before Shane and Illya blew my mind, but it all makes sense in leading our two knuckleheads to being able to talk with one another! That last line where Illya is like, “I’m coming to the cottage” builds SO MUCH HYPE! Illya helping Shane through his anxiety attack – I could rewatch those scenes with how CARING he was over and over again – Illya, for all his “toughness,” really came in to support Shane through Episode 6 and I just adore it! And the “I Love You” SCENE!? STOP – that got me to cry!! Their acting is just PHENOMENAL in this series and I could rave about it all day! I also was glad that after their initial shock (that it was ILLYA of all people) that they were so supportive of Shane and his relationship and sexuality – it was a big point of relief! Sorry to get to this comment a week later, but I just adored this series and really want to read the first two books now!! This was such a great surprise of a series! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Rose had already won me over in the previous episode, but it was definitely Episode 5 with how she broached the subject of Shane's sexuality with him, and the fact that they can still be such great friends 🥺 One thing I love about this show is that Ilya is portrayed as an intelligent man, but is also allowed to have moments when he is unsure if he understands a word - like compatible - and has to look it up. It's not played off as a joke that he had to look it up/that he's dumb for not knowing. It's portrayed in a very realistic manner of a polyglot just not being 100% about the meaning of a word in a foreign language. This show is very good at portraying the real life issue in today's world, especially when it comes to Ilya being Russian. Yes Shane has had his own hurdles to get over with accepting his sexuality and coming out to his parents, but while I feel Ilya has long accepted that he's bisexual being public about that is a much bigger hurdle to get over than Shane has to deal with. Being public about his sexuality would prevent him from ever being able to safely return home, but considering his father and brother's positions in the police (a governmental body), Ilya also has to consider the backlash his family members back in Russia could face because of him. And it was because of the situation in Russia that the whole time Ilya was talking to Shane on the phone, especially when he started rambling in Russian, I was so terrified that someone would overhear him and report him 😢 The relief I felt when he managed to get it all out and was still alone in Russia, but not feeling alone because he had Shane, made me need to pause the episode to breathe a sigh of relief. Yes! I'm so glad you also thought of Cottage Core danmei-style when Shane suggested them going to his "cottage". Gotta say that for my British ass the term cottage has quite the different meaning to Shane 🤣 But their Cottage Core was so beautiful, soft, and endearing, but also damn emotional 🥰 To say that I fangirled like crazy over Scott and Kip's story would be an understatement. I was evil giggling to myself when you made the guess that Ilya and Shane coming out could be the bridge for Scott coming out and getting to be happy with Kip 😂 The way it was done brought tears to my eyes though. I was so damn proud of Scott for just going with it. Man got the win, knew that the one person he wanted to share it with was right there, and he took that leap and said "To hell with it" 🥺 I adore the way Ilya allayed Shane's fears in regards to his feelings. It did at first make me want to shake him when he started talking about all these hot women around him, but it was such an Ilya way to tell Shane that he's the one for him 🥰 Oh I broke when Ilya told Shane his mother would have loved him. Had to pause the episode and just have a little cry. Such a one liner, but filled with so much meaning 🥲 I just love how supportive Shane's parents are of him being gay, it's just a lot for them to take in that his chosen partner is Ilya Rozanov 🤣 The portrayal of Shane's anxiety attack was so well done. And I totally agree with you that the way the scene was done depicted this as being something Shane and his parents have dealt with before. But the way Ilya comforted Shane and helped him focus on the moment and not the unknown tells me that Ilya is aware of what helps a person going through that, and may even be aware that this is something Shane has gone through before.

Yeah, I wish I had time; the editing and all that...I just don't have room to fit it all in - and I'm trying to get back to ACTUALLY watching other things outside the channel...even if I end up talking about them on the channel, haha! Thank you for sharing your perspective! It's sad that some in the queer community get mad at someone bisexual dating someone the opposite sex as them -- that sucks. I have a few students on the team I coach that have identified as bisexual and have dated a man, then a woman, then a man, etc. I try to be more vocal about character being bisexual if I'm shipping them as such, so that erasure isn't there and I'm glad Illya represents that character in the show. Thanks for the comment and sharing that perspective!

Personally I would've loved to watch you actually react to this show but you definitely do deserve to watch things on your own time too lol. And also, as a bisexual Canadian myself, ive never really had anyone say they were worried I was gonna leave or a man or a woman but I have had discussions with exes about if I was gonna date a man or a woman next lol. The "fun" part (aka not fun at all) about being bi is that if you date a guy, youre considered straight and if you date a girl, youre considered lesbian. There is no bisexuality in public perception a lot of the time unfortunately. And people in the queer community get very passionately upset when youre a bi woman dating a man.
