My Neighbor Totoro: Movie Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*NEIGHBORLY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

I have somehow escaped having fully seen this film my entire life, but thankfully - because of Shimoyama's patronage - I'm seeing it finally in all its quirky, heartwarming glory! This film was so sweet and QUITE the realistic depiction of engaging with small children in a rural countryside! I'm so glad I got to see this film and talk with you all about it!

NOTE: Because it's Studio Ghibli and Disney-related, there's just the timer reaction; apologies! But hopefully, y'all can sync up and enjoy!

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

My Neighbor Totoro: Movie Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

Comments

Thank you for the comment and kind words - I am SO glad I finally got to see this movie! And as an adult, I definitely had a different view on it than I know I would have as a kid! Yeah, I probably would want Totoro to follow GOTF so I wasn't TOO sad! I can so see the tie to In This Corner of the World as well! Hahahaha, the granny being inappropriate! Yes, but that dad! Green Flag CITY! XD The resistance to losing hope between the sisters towards their mother is SO. THERE. I agree! And yes, Ghibli films are fantastic at handling certain commentary on real life circumstances in an abstract and artistic way that allows for exploration of these events! I really loved that the dad was doing his best to help parent in a potentially dire situation! I can't believe this is just the first of the month's commissions! We have a lot of good ones this month! Shimoyama picked an amazing one for sure!!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was such a treat – glad you finally got to watch this one in full. I had not seen it for a long time, so this was very much an enjoyable rewatch with a fresh perspective. 🥰 In terms of the amazing double bill... I would definitely go with GOTF first and Totoro second. 😭 How well this little world was realised also really reminded me of In This Corner of the World. The dad was absolutely a green flag! And the granny annoyed me just as much as I remembered - with all her incredibly (painfully) realistic and profoundly harmful nonsense. And nearly all of it was so completely age- and developmentally inappropriate. Go stuff your vegetables, old hag! 😆 As always – themes of resistance? Magically present. 😆 Especially, resistance to despair – there is plenty of fear and uncertainty, but the way the kids play, explore and interact with the world presents a very special kind of defiance. I really love how Ghibli films often subvert very stereotypical portrayals of traumatic circumstances, so the resistance is also artistic. And the dad’s character is a great example of continuing to raise and support kids who are in the midst of such a difficult situation (that they could never fully understand and could be really hurt by regardless of the outcome). Thank you for another amazing commission, Shimoyama! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
