Uptown Girls (2003): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

*TEA-WORTHY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

When I started this movie, what I thought was going to be a quirky, early 2000's romcom ended up being a much more introspective look at two young women coping with grief in very different ways who find each other and find ways to help each other heal and grow as people!

Of course, there is quirkiness along the way and lots of 2000's tropes, but this was so much more a special movie than I initially gave it credit as, so thank you, Nicholas, for commissioning this really heartfelt little film! :3 I loved it!

September of SUFFERING! XD On point, right?! This was SUCH a pleasant surprise and I loved it! This was such a lovely journey, indeed! I can instantly see why this would be a nostalgic comfort movie! And I love the idea of seeing it as a kid vs. adult twice! Thank you! I love Billy Joel so much - it’s from 2007, though, so not quite 2003! I love the foil that Dakota and Britney are with each other; their chemistry is off the chart! And yeah, I wasn’t prepared for the emotional gut punch of this episode!! The cast all did amazing in this! The fashion - man, there are so many callbacks to style now, isn’t there? And Britney Murphy - what a talent! She really tore this up and it’s such a time capsule of the early 2000’s in the best way. That moment on the spinning teacups is so perfect - a real representation of the film as a whole! I just love the symbolism of it, too! I loved the theme, how the characters in this handle grief, and that idea of childhood vs. adulthood and all it affects. Thank YOU so much for the commission - you were too kind to commission it and I was so happy to see a Britney Murphy film that I hadn’t seen before! I’m glad to react and discuss and hopefully it will get more people to watch it - it’s worth it! <3

Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! This was a fantastic commission! Murphy was so ahead of her time; such a natural talent! And yesssss, the chemistry was off the rails between them! I loved that! And yeah, the romance storyline could have been cut entirely and the moooooottttthhhheerrrr - I understand what you mean! And yes, themes of resistance are THERE! I love the foil that Molly and Ray are – I love how they tackle that stage of grief in this movie! Nicholas definitely chose a keeper this week!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a really fun watchalong, I definitely don’t think I’d seen this one before. 🥰 Definitely agree that Murphy had an ‘edge to her without trying’ – she had such a natural charisma and I’ve loved her in a bunch of stuff. Her and Fanning had amazing chemistry! Loved them together – especially in the montage of them growing closer, and more and more protective of one another. Really glad this did not go down the route of romance focus, made this much more interesting to me. Honestly, to me, that whole storyline could have been cut. 😆 (I also won’t even start on the mother’s profound neglect or I’ll be ranting forever.) And of course we had plenty of themes of resistance! 😆 With Molly and Ray nicely positioned as these kind of two opposing forces, one resisting maturity and the other resisting openness and vulnerability. And this handled and presented grief in such a unique way. The resistance was a stage of grief for them both. Thank you to Nicolas for another amazing commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙

*Opens vanilla ice cream tub* September of suffering! Or.. is it? Hahaha. Aaaaaaaaahhh! I’m over the moon that you’ve seen (another lol) one of my favorite films of all time. You know- when I rewatched the film I had some reservations because I missed the first third of the film. I could only recall Molly struggling with laundry and some scenes with Ray. Rewatching from start to finish was such a interesting and lovely journey. Turns out a lot of fans I’ve interacted have mentioned seeing this as a kid too! And rewatched it as an adult or nearly the same age Molly was! It’s crazy how coincidental that is! New fans ofc have flocked in but more so to the point I don’t think it’s just a cult following anymore haha. For a 2003 film to still reach out new hearts is so… it’s so heartwarming to see. Anywho- It was a great surprise to realize this wasn’t really a comedy rom-com but rather a drama. Btw what an awesome Billy Joel shirt! It’s so cool and honestly I DO think of them whenever this movie is mentioned. 😆 There’s a lot of points I’m glad you covered throughout and towards the end. I could definitely see the film benefiting having more time. Oh how I wishhhh they extended it but I’m content with what we are given. Dakota and Britney.. are like two sides of the same coin. Loved that we see them grow together & become more protective that really just tugs your heartstrings. 🥹 Neal I honestly didn’t really care for haha but I do love what they end up doing with him. There isn’t this cliche ending where he makes up with Molly and date each other once again. Honestly I don’t blame you for tearing up because this movie makes me cry every-time! So the cast here isn’t too stacked and they all did such an amazing job. Ing may very well be my second fav character right after Molly and Ray because she gives me hella Virgo vibes. Huey not being weird or having ulterior motive was so refreshing. I would have definitely liked to have seen how far back they all (Molly, Ing and Huey) knew each other. They had each other’s back and it’s soo nice to see male and female friendships without the stupid mentality that they can’t be close friends. On another note… The fashion and iconic styles deserves several Pin-interest boards haha. The whimsical & playful designs were FANTASTIC. ✨ They honestly went all out for Britney Murphy. And yes! You can definitely say that again about the movie being an early 2000s time capsule! Ray’s room alone has so much nostalgic items including electronics. It was nice to see a public payphone! I still remember using one waaaay back when. I do like to point out that the way the spinning camera effect (from the beginning) was an intentional thematic choice that beautiful ties in to the tea cup scene. 🥹 That may just be my favorite scene from the film. Ray lashes out and finally breaks down. Her walls all came crashing down and luckily… Molly was there to hold her. That… makes me tear up every time. 😭 She was there there for her in a way no one was for her when she found out her parents died… ugh my hearttt. Also… Yk, they aren’t exactly subtle with setting up this idea of a spectrum with growing up by contrasting Ray & Molly. The whole “growing up” and learning to be a “kid” theme was SO well done. I do also wanna mention the idea of our “inner child” as well. I quite frankly thought it was a ridiculous thing/concept to talk about for the longest time. However over the years I realized it’s not nonsense. But rather a subconscious part of you that influences your adult self due to a collection of memories, feelings, & experiences from your childhood. If there’s one take I’d like everyone who’s sees this film to take away from- it’s being kinder to yourself. Sometimes the worse comments that are said to us, are the things we tell ourselves. God, there’s sooo much more I want to say and talk about but… I’m hanging by a thread 😂 so to conclude! Thank you SO MUCHHH for the reaction! I’m really amazed that you already knew Britney Murphy. 🥺❤️ She left too soon at such a young age. Dakota Fanning still talks about her fondly and knows about the viral TikTok’s that have come out recently 😆 So yeah, this was such a delightful way to end my day. I hope people give it a chance & I’m excited to see what next this month. Have a nice one yall (I hope my rambles made sense lol)
