Chapter 67

The knock on the door would have woken up Song,

Maybe the Crafts from Maryam's people can help there, cause I don't think the others of the 13th can make use of that without being obvious about it. Granted Ai seems like the type who wouldn't actually know about the weakness in her contract.

Too bad they don't have enough monsters on the field to Tribute to summon it, they'll have to send it to the graveyard and bring it back from there.

Judging by the bone-clay guess, its probably pretty vulnerable to a concussive hit like a cannon, and anything that could crack it. Based on the fact that its fired, my guess is temperature. Pottery can break in the cold, or it can be melted with enough heat. Ai is probably pretty vulnerable to these two because her contract prevents her from being aware of thermal pain.

I hope Tristan doesn't kill the 19th (I also think he might not get the opportunity, because whatever ritual they're doing sounds like it could have major consequences). A major thread in his Book 2 development has been accepting that he's part of the Watch now and doesn't have to go and "get rid of any loose ends" personally. It's been a bit of a two steps forward, one step back process, due to the threats coming from within the Watch itself, but the rest of his brigade has rallied around him and is using all their available connections to handle this as a group. Song also proved that she understands Tristan better now by asking him to give her and the others a chance to handle it first, rather than just forbidding him from taking action (now she needs to learn to do the same thing with Maryam). It's going to be a long time before Tristan can trust the Watch to support him - if he ever does - but I think his next step is trusting his brigade to help him with his problems, even when their methods aren't the methods he'd use.

Oh I love this chapter so much, but one small detail has me hooked: The Flowers They are making the aether unstable around Tratheke, seemingly because of civil war, but now I think its more. Odyssean and Odorumai, two faces of one god, and the founding myth of Asphodel. They are both tied up in the crowns and because of that, they are pulling on it, wrenching it in different directions. The other idea is that the civil war, the instability, shown through the crowns makes the aether, and therefore the Hated One's Prison, more unstable. It weakens it, which allows people to access the Prison, worrying away at the boundary. It gave me shivers, knowing that the simple flowers had been haunting this from the start.

A Total Sham

Thermal shock? She could shatter from being dunked in water after being in a burning building.

Poop McScoop

Odyssean is just another face of the God of death.

Poop McScoop

I don't think Tristan is going to get all the 19th. Cressida and Izel probably survive.

My best guess is that the Hated One has absorbed/captured/replaced the One Who Bears the Sickle, as well as the Golden Ram and the Odyssean. All three were weakened or minor gods, and Cleon mentioned that the Odyssean had been behaving differently. We've gotten a lot of information about how gods can be altered by being worshipped more, less, or just differently; in the epilogue of Book One, we learned that the Red Eye fragmented into a bunch of smaller gods that would try to cannibalize each other and essentially merge again. We're still missing a few pieces of information, like the exact purpose of the harpoon and who gave it to the cult, but from what we have, it looks like the Hated One might have circumvented being imprisoned by latching on to other gods and using them as puppets and power sources.

Angharad: I was your friend! Song: It's not enough. Also Song: I have however decided being super best friends will be enough. Sorry it took me several months to get there.

Gwennafran

Tonight is the big showdown! 1) Tristan is going to kill the 19. 2) Angharad is going to the party. Probably she suspects Drakos to be there and that this is a good time to steal the infernal forge. (she will be in the palace!) 3) Maryam is going to attempt to kill Hooks. (also in the palace!) 4) Song and Evander will fight the yellow earth. Also most probably: 5) The coups will start (and attack the palace!). 6) The Hated one will escape (and attack the palace!!). A fun night

Omri Solan

Poison is my bet. Oh hey Tristan's home!

Draken09

Nobody has all the cards in hand. Some people are playing Uno. One person just has a Blue Eyes White Dragon.

Draken09

Great to see everyone of the 13th in the same place again, even if Maryam is not in the room right now. It's been so long but with this so many things are going to come together for them and perhaps with this chapter's developments we can see Tredegar really having a chance to stay on the team, which was always likely but I can't discard the possibility of it not happening as I can imagine the story going in that direction and believe it would be done well.

sapassde .

Cunning pirates and warlords definitely kill people though. Maybe violent deaths, especially those featuring betrayal (prominent in civil war) appeal to the odyssean

Joe Rachman

Suddenly, Tristan's recent interest in artillery might be quite good when it comes to get rid of this troublesome Yellow Earth fanatic...

Antony444

It'd have to be either a cannon or poison. Since she can't feel pain, maybe something that melts her from the inside before she notices?

Runaway_Cactuar

I think everybody in-universe is also confused at how many plots are afoot lol

Runaway_Cactuar

YESSSSSS HE’S BACK!!!!!!!!!

Musclerelaxant

Ok, new theory: the Hated One is the Sickle, ancient death god of Asphodel “There were gods on this land before the Lierganen came, and though they are buried so deep as to have become nameless they yet remain,” he told her. “The day will come when the One Who Bears The Sickle wakes, and all the bodies given to the earth of Asphodel will be cut up and devoured whole.” The Sickle's imprisonment is why its worship faded, and the cult used the harpoon and the sickle they looted from the temple to breach the aether seal and allow some of the god's power to manifest. Not sure how Odssyean factors in, maybe he's using the Sickle as a tool, maybe its the other way around. Or maybe the other theory is correct and Odssyean is the Hated One, but I don't think Odssyean makes sense as a death-eater - he's a god of cunning pirates and warlords, not death.

Emmet Mackle

I think I gotta reread everything because I am very confused about what everyone is plotting.

Avid_Appletree

Any ideas on Ai’s weakness? It sounds to me like her contract cremates her bones into pottery. But I don’t see how that could hurt her unless she’s forced to transmute burning/dissolved/poisoned pottery back into her body.

sharikak 54

I really can't wait for the big showdown now that they're all together again, such a great chapter. And on a side note, I truly hope Ai is one of those about to reap what they sowed and we never have to see her again after this book

Misty57

peak lights once more oh my god please never stop

joie01

This was such a triumph of a chapter.

Lucy Severine

What a magnificent *gem* of a chapter. My breath, taken! Superb!

StrollingEye

Incredible scene between Angie and Song. Loved seeing Song open up and truly come to grips with what went wrong, own it, and earnestly work to change their relarionship.

Haydn Nitzsche

huzzah the 13th is going to be a team

awakeatdawn

Shit's about to go down in an unbelievably messy fashion. Since the Hated One/Odyssean feeds off death that cannot be a good thing... Also I don't think the 13th has put togethered The Hated One/Odyssean connection. Do they get that this cult is based around the imprisoned god now escaped?

Joe Rachman

The band is back together!
