HEATED RIVALRY 1x1 & 1x2 Watchalong!

There’s a fascinating dominant/submissive dynamic between Ilya and Shane. Contrary to claims that Ilya is manipulating or coercing Shane, their relationship actually fulfills deeper psychological needs for both of them. Shane’s suffocatingly controlled life makes "letting go" feel freeing, while Ilya's chaotic life needs the anchor of being in charge. This is a mutually beneficial concensual arrangement. Importantly, Ilya only has the power that Shane allows him, so Shane is truly in control. A prime example of Shane enjoying this is seen after he asks, "Are you going to f*** me?" When Ilya replies, "We will see," Shane's smirk of excitement shows he’s loving every minute. Shane is not a weak—he’s pushed back against Ilya before. His current participation is because he’s enjoying it, not because he’s being forced. The early episodes quickly established that Ilya highly values consent and would never force Shane to do anything against his will.

Just a few thoughts... They are both the same age; in fact, Shane might actually be a couple of months older than Ilya according to the book. Ilya's obvious experience and security with his sexuality (even though he's closeted) may give people the impression that he's older. In the balcony scene Ilya was upset because he was going back to Russia in three days, not Boston. He hasn't lived in Boston long enough to consider or call it 'home'. Due to his privilege and relationship with his parents, Shane just assumes that going home to your family would be a good thing and really can't comprehend it actually being traumatic. Even with the look on Ilya's face, Shane doesn't pick it up. The issue at the press conference wasn't Ilya's confidence, it was the language barrier: the reporter asked a very complex question, and Ilya had to translate it into Russian, come up with a response, and then translate that response back into English all in a matter of seconds.

I''m so impressed by your reaction to this series. While many reactors dismiss the sexual intimacy as 'porn'—despite accepting similar straight scenes in shows like Bridgerton, True Blood and Game of Thrones—your maturity is incredibly refreshing. You clearly understand that these scenes aren't for shock value; they are essential to the story and go a long way in normalizing the queer experience.

Ilya wasn’t losing confidence at the press conference. He’s been in America for like two years on and off at this point and they asked him a six part question in English. Shane stepped in because he realized Ilya didn’t fully understand the question. The reporter was an idiot is the issue. 😂

Okay a couple of quick points from episode one, which is all I’ve watched with you so far. They’re both the same age. They were both born in 1991 and Shane is actually a month older. Ilya is more experienced but just as far in the closet in the states as he is in Russia. They both have concerns with their careers but Ilya also would not be able to go back to Russia if he was publicly outed. Just some things to keep in mind. For the first episodes you see all their meetings. Like there were no meetings in between.

Loved this reaction!! Great job, wonderful analysis! So looking forward to the next four episodes! They're so great!

I ran to the Patreon for this. I just want to say that in episode one, Ilya was having trouble at the All-Star press conference because he couldn't process English so quickly. He was having trouble translating everything,

TheJoestarWithTheStrawHat

Great reactions, can't wait for the later episodes.
