This "three way deadlock" is inspired by 17th century Chinese game Sansukumi-ken, which is pretty much an old version of rock paper scissors, but more like toad slug snake. I think it goes like snake>toad, toad>slug, slug>snake or something. When Sannin fight each other it's like 3 people playing rock paper scissors and cannot decide a winner since they're equally matched. Imagine living in some Ninja Village like 20 years before this when you're at war with Konoha and you're being attacked by all of these 3 summons. That's why the Sannin are so renowned and they're mentioned separately from other Jonin.
