Shine ชาย (Orchestric Ver) - Episode 3 | REACTION

Comments

As a librarian, my blood pressure was actively spiking for that entire section of the episode. As for all the jokes about offending Dewey, though—DO IT! 🤣 The guy was kind of a shithead, and the Dewey decimal system is an inherently racist cataloging system, so I’m all for making the man role over in his grave.

Aw, Edison. He’s so young, and by proxy makes me feel so old. 🤣 If you’re up for some light reading, this report has a great overview of LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand. The long and the short of it is though, that like so many cultures, Thailand has experienced varying levels of queer acceptance over its history, and, like so many Asian cultures, its views were heavily influenced in the early 20th century by western colonial values. Specifically the accepted morality of Victorian England. And those views persisted for many decades. Yes, unpaid (non-sex work) sex between adults of the same gendered was decriminalized in Thailand in the mid 1950s, but that being said, same sex relationships and any type of gender presentation that went against the western binary was heavily stigmatized. Of course there are additional nuances to be considered, particularly in terms of Thai concepts of gender, but that’s probably going off into the woods and beyond the context of what’s needed to understand the plot of this series (at least so far). https://www.undp.org/sites/g/files/zskgke326/files/migration/asia_pacific_rbap/rbap-hhd-2014-blia-thailand-country-report_0.pdf
