Poll #533 - Just Passing Through - Darklake Description and Adventure Poll

A stilted haven between lake and sea, Darklake endures shifting winds, old grudges, and the deep, unseen things stirring beneath its waters.

Cold mist drifts off the dark lake as you approach the stilt-built town, its rooftops braced against the fierce winds that sweep in from both west and east. Narrow, winding walkways twist between weathered buildings perched above the shallows, lanterns swaying overhead as they guide travelers through the maze of wooden streets. Despite the brooding water and creaking timbers beneath your feet, the locals greet you warmly, moving with practiced ease through a place shaped by storms, shifting shadows, and quiet resilience.

Darklake sits on the eastern rim of the Weeping Sea, perched over the black waters of Dark Lake—a vast, inland basin whose depths are said to hide Ol’ Lumpy, a legendary tentacled creature blamed for every capsized boat and missing net. The townspeople treat the rumor with a mix of amusement and caution, claiming no monster has surfaced in generations… but always knocking on wood when the lake grows unusually still. Despite the eerie waters beneath their feet, Darklake thrives as a resilient community of fishers, shipwrights, and weather-hardened laborers who harvest the lake’s bounty and craft vessels able to withstand the brutal crosswinds between lake and sea. Its stilt-raised architecture and maze-like walkways are not quirks—they’re necessities born from constant flooding, unpredictable storms, and the shifting mud flats below.

The town is ruled by Lord Sigrid, a century-old half-elf who moves with the slow precision of age but retains a razor-sharp mind and unwavering loyalty to Aurenvale’s crown. Sigrid governs alongside a Council of Elders representing each major craft and quarter, ensuring Darklake remains stable even as frontier tensions rise. The town’s greatest political tie, however, is to Veymar’s Silver Reeve, Kaelith Marrowell, a stern diplomat whose influence protects Darklake from coastal disputes and trade disruptions. Between the crown’s favor, Veymar’s support, and the Elders’ pragmatic leadership, Darklake stands as one of the few frontier settlements able to balance tradition, danger, and profit—so long as the lake stays quiet and whatever lurks beneath it remains asleep.

Adventure Poll

Which adventure would you like to see in a mid-length format?

1. The Lakebed Tremor

A series of sudden tremors shakes the stilt foundations across Darklake, rattling beams and splitting several walkways. Lord Sigrid fears Ol’ Lumpy is stirring again and asks the party to investigate the lake’s depths—or the suspicious activity near the Korraki shrine occurring at the same time.

2. The Silverfleet Sabotage

Astrid II discovers that several essential ship components have been subtly tampered with, threatening the fleet’s ability to sail if Crimson Bay demands action. She suspects sabotage but doesn’t know whether it’s Korraki agitators, Veymar agents, or criminals exploiting tensions. She needs discreet investigators who can move between factions.

3. Blood on the Planks

The Temple of Korrak reports a missing acolyte whose bloodied charm was found beneath a walkway near the Stinking Market. Astrid III claims it’s a kidnapping meant to frame her followers. Helga of the Great Yew believes it’s a violent Korraki ritual. Both ask the party for help—offering conflicting “truths.”

4. The Lost Spice Caravan

Ingrid’s latest spice shipment from Veymar vanished along the Graycut Canal, leaving only wreckage and scorch marks. She quietly hires the party to track it down before the Silver Reeve learns of the failure. Clues hint at pirates—or something stranger lurking along the waterway.

5. Song of the Deep

Fishermen swear they hear strange humming from beneath the boards at night, rhythmic and almost melodic. Those who listen too long fall into trances and stare into the lake for hours. Olaf fears cult activity; Korraki elders claim it’s an omen; Elvira says it’s something older. Someone needs to find the source before people disappear.

6. The Disappearing Docks

Entire sections of the Darklake Docks vanish overnight, as if sawed cleanly away and pulled into the lake. Hilda suspects smuggling crews clearing evidence, while Ragnar believes something in the lake is “feeding.” The party must uncover the truth—and stop the next section from vanishing with people still on it.

7. The Rival Flames

A heated confrontation erupts between followers of the Great Yew and Korraki traditionalists when a sacred Yew icon is found painted in Korrak’s colors. Sigrid fears the fragile peace may shatter and begs for mediators—while Bjorn quietly asks the party to find the real culprit stirring up trouble from the shadows.
