Sozin honestly went to the volcano intending to help, but once he saw the opportunity to get what he wanted he gave in to his "evil" side and let Roku die. When I first saw this episode, I thought it would get a little cheesy and Iroh would say Zuko's great-grandfather wasn't really alive at the end because Sozin had changed so much and was some hollow version of who he used to be. So I was really happy that wasn't what happened. I have zero idea how Iroh got that note to Zuko and where he got the royal artifact, but he's basically magical and has friends all over the world, so I just accept that he's able to do stuff like that. I think Aang killed that vulture bee in the desert after it took Momo, and that was a big deal - he was so angry. But yeah, I think it's just Aang's personality and the culture he was raised in.

The Avatar doesn't have any ingrained no-killing rule, but the Air Nomads were deeply pacifistic and did not use their bending for violent purposes. (A big part of the philosophy of the show, which was informed by Nickelodeon's standards, was "action without violence" - I think they took that note from Nick and ran with it brilliantly.)
