The younger boys were in a cheerful mood, having mostly finished their ice cream. Seeing his sister, Ryan immediately started rambling on to her about the fun things he had just accomplished in the play area. Chris seemed amused by the exuberance of the young boy who had been put into his care. Neither of them were showing any hint of their older selves at the moment.
Tim offered to get some ice cream for himself and Bonnie, and she asked for a chocolate cone. As she sat listening to her brother’s adventures, Tim purchased two cones from the shop.
He handed a cone to her as he took a seat. For a moment, their fingers brushed against each other. Something about that brief contact felt even more intimate than the hand holding they had done before. Maybe it was due to this being the first gift he had ever presented to her, that is aside from the years of growth he had transferred to her using the app.
As they ate their treats, Tim silently observed the results of the transformations he had performed on the three young people with him. Compared to who they had been, they were nearly unrecognizable. Chris seemed so at ease and content, no sign remaining of his previous animosity. Ryan appeared absolutely carefree and joyful, an innocent child, through and through. Bonnie was just happy, showing the satisfied smile of a person in possession of a wonderful secret, and that pleasant attitude only further enhanced her already exceptional natural beauty.
“So,” Bonnie said, when her brother slowed down to take a breath and suck up what was left of his melting ice cream. “What do we do now?”
Before Tim could respond, music began playing from Bonnie’s bag. She pulled out a cell phone and answered it.
“Hi, Mom,” she said, her face going pale with worry. “What’s up?”
Bonnie listened quietly as her mother responded, her anxiety fading as the call went on without her mother commenting on her new voice.
“Okay,” she said. “I’ll make sure we are home in another hour. Later.” She swiped the screen to end the call and slipped the phone back into her bag.
“You’ve got to go?” Tim asked, feeling disappointed that their time might almost be up.
“Soon,” she said. “Yeah.”
“I see.”
Bonnie explained, “We had the day off from school because of some religious holiday, but our mom wants us home at the regular time.”
Tim nodded. “I guess you go to a different school than we do.”
“Yeah,” she said, looking somewhat embarrassed. “Our parents send us to private schools.”
“Right,” was all Tim said, not wanting to explain that he and Chris were playing hooky from their public school. Briefly, he wondered how wealthy Bonnie’s family was.
“Wait,” she said, as if she had just recalled something. She checked in her bag and pulled out a car key. “I have a car,” she stated in awe at her good fortune. “I know how to drive it, too. Isn’t that cool?”
Tim smiled. “It is.”
“Can I give you guys a ride home, maybe?” she offered.
“Sure,” Tim said. “I’ll just have to squeeze my bike into your trunk.” Then, he blushed, realizing that he might have just made an accidental double entendre.
Bonnie did not seem to notice, or at least she pretended not to. “Let’s grab your bike, first. Then, we can go to my car.”

Their walk to the exit went by in near silence. Tim and Bonnie both seemed hesitant to interact. Maybe each of them were waiting to see if the other one wanted to hold hands again. Whatever the reason, neither of them said more than a couple of words until they retrieved Tim’s bike and wheeled it to Bonnie’s car.
“Wow,” Chris said, circling the car to check it out. “That’s a nice looking convertible.”
“Yeah,” Bonnie said. “I think it was a gift for my sixteenth birthday. It’s one of those weird things, though, about you making me older. I don’t remember the party, but I do know where the car came from.”
Again, Tim wondered about her family’s wealth. He assumed they had a lot more money than his parents did. They surely could not afford to give him a car.
Bonnie popped open the trunk, and Tim removed the front wheel from his bike to squeeze it in. Meanwhile, she opened the soft top and folded back to secure it in place.
“Well,” she said. “Hop in. Let’s go.”
They all got in, the younger boys slipping into the smaller back seat, leaving Tim sitting beside Bonnie up front.
“Crazy to think I’ve never even driven a go kart before,” she said as she started the car and put it into gear. “Not nervous at all, though. I just… know… I can do it.”
They drove off, enjoying the wind blowing through their hair as they picked up speed on the roads. Bonnie appeared to be having a great time behind the wheel, barely taking notice of Tim as she drove. He was content to let her enjoy the drive free of distractions. Besides, with the noise of the breeze, they would need to shout to be heard, so he kept mostly quiet aside from giving her occasional directions to his house.
At last, when they arrived, Bonnie pulled into the driveway and popped open her trunk.
For a few awkward seconds, no one moved or said anything.
“Hey,” Tim said. “We should… keep in touch… you know?”
“My phone number!” she said, realizing the obvious. “Of course.”
They exchanged numbers.
“Hey,” she said as Tim and Chris got out of the car to remove his bike. “I’ll check in with you tonight or tomorrow to let you know how we’re doing.”
“Okay,” Tim said, setting his bike and tire down on the driveway. “I look forward to it.”
He stepped up to her door, and there was a moment when he wondered if he should kiss her or not.
“Bonnie,” cried Ryan. “I gotta pee. Can we go home now?”
With the moment passed, Tim said, “See you later,” and stepped back to give her room to drive away.
“Later,” she said, smiling. Then, she backed her car onto the road and drove off.
Tim watched her until her car had passed out of his view.
“Nice work,” Chris said. “You even got her number.”
“Yeah,” Tim said, realizing that his life had taken a very interesting turn today.
What does Tim do that evening?
