This is the world weary version of Blackadder. He is so far removed from Royalty and wealth here that he is resigned to his lot in life. And for the most part, his desire to escape the trenches does extend to Baldrick and George to most of the time. This series does lean very heavily onto classism and how the war was fought. The generals at the top were still old school so had either spent decades in the army or were from the upper classes or both. They struggled to adapt to a new way of fighting a war (the French army were still in blue uniforms with shiny helmets at the start of the war for example) and held onto old school tactics to the very end. So you get a lot of truth told via jokes in series 4 (watch Geoffrey Palmer in the last ep as he sets out his tactics with the toy soldiers - knocks loads down but then stands up just one figure). It walks the line between ridicule and respect just about right - except for this episode. The ending is a let down for me but it is a minor blip in a great series. Fun Fact: Hugh Laurie (George) did go to Cambridge in real life and rowed for them in the Boat Race in 1980. His crew lost by a matter of inches to Oxford University and he has described it as one of the biggest regrets of his life.
