I agree with Nolan (earlier) on several points. First, this is one of the most awkward and cringe episodes of the whole series—I always grit my teeth through it, if I watch it at all. Galen wanting to leave the ship? Not convincing, and way too sudden. Ellen, having been revealed as a sensible creator and scientist in the previous episode, and then reverting immediately to the bitchy character she was previously? Ugh. So unlikely and so hurtful. The whole Caprica Six pregnancy sub-plot being erased instantly…and existing primarily to illustrate that Cylons CAN procreate if there is love? Awkwardly done. Second, what I DID like about this episode…the shot where Anders’ brain activity suddenly goes wild on the monitor and you realize there may be hope; the scene where Galen is looking in the prison cell where Boomer is being held—what is he thinking? And the scene where Laura and Bill watch the Cylons adding emotional photos to the memory wall and realizing that the ship is ALREADY blended—and as you say, that’s not a bad thing. Third, I agree that the final episode, Daybreak, can be watched any way you want—it was originally aired in two parts but Amazon has it in three parts. Either is fine. The point is, the finale is masterfully done, isn’t subdivided into two OR three, and has a wonderful sense of closure, so it feels satisfactory as the final word. The extended cut of the two or three part finale is highly recommended, just keep us informed of the sync to us at home. Lastly, “The Plan” is full of wonderful plot details and surprising explanations—BUT it’s all regarding things in past episodes. Timeline-wise, it only explores answers up to the final two episodes of Season 2 where Galen realizes that “Brother Cavill” is a Cylon. This is why it feels better if seen before the finale, regardless of the original broadcast order. The Plan was conceived and directed by Edward J. Olmos himself, in order to satisfy BSG fans who wanted more detailed explanations of certain things in the miniseries and in the first two seasons. Those things are definitely worth learning about, including a more detailed account of the initial attack on the Caprican colonies and the Cylons’ initial “plan” to destroy the humans. It’s not that The Plan isn’t worth watching…it certainly is—but as Nolan said, it just doesn’t feel as rewarding when seen after the finale. That said, it’s better to watch it SOMETIME rather than leave it off entirely. When you see it, you’ll understand why it’s a great explanation episode but not an addendum to the finale. Be warned—The Plan is hard to find online or Amazon, so you might need to include more visual/audio sync points than you usually do. And finally, as much as I’m always put off by this last episode (Deadlock), the next one is one of my absolute favorites, and then it’s a nonstop roller coaster from there.
