2025-07-01 17:24:49 +0000 UTCI watched Blackadder first, and STILL didn't recognize Hugh Laurie in House, MD... he transformed so completely for the role that my brain just didn't compute it, it was only until I saw his cameo in "Friends" (Ross's wedding episode in London) where he plays a grumpy brit that it clicked in my brain ๐

2025-06-21 22:34:58 +0000 UTCKat and Paula are professional actors, while I am not. So - caveat - they will know far better than me on this. I think Hugh Laurie's success in a drama is unsurprising. This is because I think that a performer with a background in comedy, who has mastered the art of comic timing, is very well trained to apply that skill to drama and tragedy. Look, for example, at Robin Williams' outstanding performance in The Dead Poets Society and many other non comedic roles. Also Emma Thompson, who of course began her career alongside Hugh Laurie as a comedy performer in the Cambridge University Footlights, but whose Academy Award wins and nominations are in dramatic roles. I'm sure there are many others.
