I’d always hoped I gave enough away for free, via my website and DeviantArt, to win enough favour so that people wouldn’t mess with my revenue stream.

When I started up The Apsara Portfolio, I knew that the comics I posted there would eventually find their way onto forums and image boards outside my control. That I would lose them to the internet. It’s the fate of all digital content: once you put it out there, it’s gone. What I never expected was that huge archives of my content would be collated, or how damaging to my endeavours those archives would be. Even my Patreon page is scraped wholesale, now, with anything I post there – and even the comments legitimate patrons leave – appearing on mirror pages that anyone can view for free.

There’s absolutely nothing I can do to stop it. I have neither the technical nor legal apparatus to prevent it. All I can do is make a list, Arya Stark style, and hope that at some stage in the future I gain access to such means.
There are a lot of very helpful people who point me toward these websites, and I read the comments that get posted on them. The mental gymnastics people perform to justify why it’s OK to undermine the attempts of others to make a living is…. depressing. As is the fact they would rather give money to those who run the offending websites than the creators of the material they’re ripping off.

If you’re not angered by the concept of another person’s work being taken without there permission, and used by another to generate ad revenue or as an excuse to ask for donations that line their pockets, I’d really like to know why. Because my sense of what is fair, what is right and what is wrong, just does not allow me to adopt that mindset.
If you like a creator’s work, you need to support them, if not by buying their work, then by not supporting or contributing to websites that steal it.

I've done this once. It was to find your original version of "Favorite Toy" which I could not find anywhere on your site. I always use Apsara to purchase through Lulu and support you here as best I can on Patreon (I'd like to help more in the future, and I will increase my pledge when I am able!) If it helps you to continue Sequential Art and possibly get back to Battle Bunnies ( I keep those pages up all the time hoping for updates!), Then supporting you financially is in EVERYONE'S best interest. Keep doing what you do, Jack, we love you stuff!

So sad to read this. I hope that more people will continue to support your work! (I admit I found you through a free site. So, maybe there's hope if you include your web address or pattreon or both in the comics and images then it will result in more funds to you! I hope so!!!)

It always baffled me why you suffer so acutely from rip offs. Your work is of both a good quality and an incredibly affordable price. Not to mention a prodigious volume and consistent pace. All qualities that deserve payment and support. But alas, people will rationalize anything.

DH

I am ashamed to say that for a while I myself was a leech like many others, but recently I have been paying like a proper fan, both with your work and a few select others. LONG LIVE THE HAMSTER!!!!!!

SILENGE

Considering the quality of your work, this news surprises me very little. Yet, it's the back-handed compliment that does you the least good and the most harm. I haven't seen your stuff anywhere out there, but I guess I don't travel in those circles. I've probably bought everything you've put out for sale, both digital and in print. So count on me for support.

Nathan Weber

You have my support!

Stone Quillian III

i want to suport you but my english suck like hell, i like your art and i no have any problem with pay apsara prices ,and of course to patreon you , a great hi from spain

Antonio Gomez Hernandez

It's sad to hear you're going through though times. You are one of my fav artists out there and I'm more than happy to keep supporting you. I wish more people did that. Don't give up´!

Chalo

One suggestion. It was a long time before I found out you have a Patreon page. Would you add a "Please support me on Patreon - JollyJack" footer onto all of your new content? The "do not distribute" footer is being ignored, but at least this way, people who want to support know where they can do so.

You give a LOT for free. The human leaches simply have no excuse. If they dont like the idea of property let them move to easter island, where the natives have no sense of it whatsoever. I bet they wouldnt like that at all. Anyway, dont get depressed about it man. We supporters outnumber the scumbags by far. We wont let you fall. Thanks for your awesome art!

SuperCDR

^ This. If you want an artist to make more art, give them some money. Or, at the very least, don't actively prevent them from making a living.

I have a confession to make. There is a huge jollyjack post on u-18 furryforum. Some people there are not only posting Jollyjack's work, but also making colored editions of them. I have to say I have downloaded a few of the colored versions. My only defence is that I have bought the original versions via Apsara, and just wanted to see them in color....but yeah, I'm part of the problem. I will stop visiting that site.

Juho

Your stuff is so affordable though and easy to purchase. And its well worth more than the price you put on them. You can expect at least from me to continue to purchase your apsaras.

Bruce Tyrannos

Some people are just unbelievably scummy. Is is so hard to understand that people need to eat, and if their art can't provide for that, then there just isn't going to be any more fucking art? I've bought pretty much every comic from the portfolio at this point. You price them so low, it's entirely morally unjustifiable to pirate them. Fuck these people.

nedanecin

I guess many don't want to spend a few $ on digital comics. Patreon just feels like the right way to support artists these days. Almost ALL the artists I support here post most of their works for free, and rely on Patreon for support. I'm sure you'd get many more backers by posting free comics on DA and such, or here as timed exclusives or HD exclusives. I know it looks like a risky move to you, but your Patreon has a LOT of backers with let's be honest little content, and almost no interaction, something backers always enjoy. With more free or patreon-exclusive comics, more opinion posts like this one, and community stuff with comments and streams, you would definitely get in the big leagues. I really like Sequential art, and this alone would get you backers if it was posted here or on DA and FA.

Shelby

I'd rather be here. ^-^ I honestly don't understand the mentality of these people who take and post things free on other places, and think they are doing a "service". Whatever. Personally, I -prefer- to pay, as long as the price isn't unreasonable. Then I just go without. Hard work deserves to be compensated, imho.

Silvador

I have been buying your stuff off of the Apsara portfolio since 2012. It makes me extremely upset when I see your stuff posted on other sites. But just know that all of us who actually care about your art and well-being are going to keep supporting you as you go on. Keep at it!

BigMountainCat

May I share a screenshot of this post (under my handle, Ravenhull)? May not change a lot of minds, but some may at least pause...

Donovan "Ravenhull"

I seen a few of those sites, but its not gonna stop me from pledging, I love me some kitty hulks! :3

Greenfeline

I can understand people trying to be be crafty if they have no money themselves to spend like, no money all. But if you can pay the measly amount then I don't get it. There are people out there that think you have to be religious to have any moral compass at all, so maybe they're one of these kinds of sociopaths. These lovecraftian monsters from alternate dimensions with no capacity for empathy.

Mark Patten

You’re gonna need a very long list then
