I thought that was season 4...

Love your TNG reactions!! Any chance you'll be reacting to the Star Trek movies with the TNG cast? 😊😊

Hey Guys, i don’t I know if you’ve watched All Good Things yet? Just to warn you, depending what platform you watch it on, on Paramount plus there are edits to it which cut out a few amazing moments. Not sure why, but if you guys watch the full unedited version it really takes it up yet another notch as they are wonderful character moments. Ideally if you can get the version where its 1 big episode rather then split into 2 I think that should solve the problem. Love you guys and your work!

I love it whenever the Gals call Picard a nerd. 🤓 You know they come from an advanced society when the nerd gets to boss around the school jock. (Riker)

How did I know Kat would love Quark's outfit! The costume designers on DS9 had to love their job, dressing him every week. Odd that Troi didn't play any role in the Worf/Alexander conflict here. Given the Worf/Troi relationship this season, it was a bit odd they didn't use this as another opportunity to explore that. Did she need to stay away so her empathic abilities didn't expose the truth about adult Alexander? I guess that could be the case but they were in the meeting scene together so maybe the writers just didn't see any point.

With the finale being a feature length episode, as was the style at the time, just the 4 episodes to go now until the end of TNG. Every time I do a rewatch I’m never ready for it to come to an end, and yet it always does, as is the way of things. Just in case it’s of any interest, and in case it’s available wherever you’re watching TNG, they aired a documentary/featurette of sorts that effectively served as a trailer to the final episode and a look back at the series as a whole. Jonathan Frakes presents it and it’s something I have very fond memories of. As it will show snippets from the final episode, you may want to leave it until after the finale if you do choose to watch it, but I definitely recommend it. It serves as a nice button for the series I think. It aired on TV in the run up to the finale, but can be found in the season 7 DVD extras and was also on Netflix (not sure if it still is, but it was when I last had it). Once you’re done with the films too, if you still want some more, Star Trek Picard season 3 is essentially an unofficial TNG season 8, so would definitely be worth it. There number of Voyager and DS9 references throughout, some central to the plot, but nothing that can’t be explained, looked up or assumed through context. As for Worf, I’ve always thought of him as more of an incompetent father than a neglectful one. He means well, and his heart is in the right place, but he just isn’t cut out for the role. I don’t think he was helped by not knowing he had a child until he was stood right in front of him. Even if there is an accidental pregnancy, that at least gives both parents 9 months to come to terms with the idea and prepare as best they can. Worf had to come to terms with it while also trying to be a parent. Add his inherent stubbornness to the mix, and that makes for a very steep learning curve, but he sort of gets there in the end.

The DS9 stuff with Alexander came out of left field and was sloppily done imo. In the first episode it felt like they just forced changes to his underlying character in order to make the story work. This TNG episode felt like a far more appropriate "ending" for his character.

Jay S

Quark was probably my favorite DS9 character, despite being from a species that is usually annoying. He was the only consistent source of comedy on the show, which was needed given it was quite a bit darker than TNG.

Jay S

I don’t think they ever really quite handle the Worf/Alexander relationship right. One issue is that it feels like the biggest reason Worf seems like an absentee father is that the writers seem to forget about the kid, or just don’t want to deal with him that often. Their relationship is seen more in DS9 and I don’t think they really solve things there that well either.

Joe Concepts

Quark is one of those characters who isn’t as bad when you get to know him, and then the further the series goes on, he evolves and becomes even better. The whole capitalist Ferengi thing, especially with Quark, can almost make you admire their complete loyalty to their values. Aside from, yes, the sexist part of it. It really is their worst trait. But that’s addressed more as DS9 goes on, too. Really, the Ferengi may be the most fully explored alien culture next to Klingons in Star Trek. I will still admit though, they can lean too far into goofy comedy with them, especially characters other than Quark.

Joe Concepts

I think the story would have been stronger without the time-travel aspect, having Worf trying to encourage Alexander to participate in the celebration and then letting him make his own choice about the Rite of Ascension. Although I normally abhor the Worf/Alexander episodes, I related to the themes of assimilation and being pressured to preserve a culture/religion you feel no connection to. Worf chose to immerse himself in Klingon culture/religion, and, up until this point, Alexander chose not to. Both paths are neutral and neither makes either of them more or less Klingon (although Worf would surely argue otherwise). I chose the Alexander path in life, and I don’t regret it for a second. I was raised in a pretty secular household. My parents are Reform Jews; I became an atheist Jew in my mid-teens. I saw no personal value in preserving cultural or religious traditions that held no meaning to me and brought me no sense of community or spiritual satisfaction. Should I have just gone through the motions and worshipped a god I didn’t believe in or celebrated holidays or festivals I didn’t care about? Who would that have benefited? The culture? The tribe? I only care about what fulfills me, not what pleases those who look down on me with contempt for not being “Jewish enough.” My life is my own. Just as Alexander’s path does not make him “less Klingon,” my path does not make me “less Jewish.” There’s also a conversation to be had about indoctrinating children, but my comment is already long enough.

Matthew Zeidman

It’s true, Worf is not a good parent. It’s a part of his character. All the more surprising since, from what we see, his adoptive human parents are really great parents. But it’s not surprising that Troi had to play a large role in smoothing out Worf and Alexander’s relationship.

Pranav Gulukota

One of the many "Ready for Trek Players", also playing Odo's mentor in DS9 and a role in Voyager.

Bruce Bromley

I always get this episode confused with "Bloodlines." And finally, we get Kat reacting to Quark. Loves his fashion, amused and a little annoyed by his capitalist streak. Probably would detest his sexism, though. But otherwise the "ugh, this shithead," while slightly laughing at him, is probably the best and intended reaction one is to have at Quark, overall, if not in specific episodes where he sometimes crosses the line into unlikability. Ahh, poor Worf. He just doesn't have a clue. Part of the issue here is that he has memories from being very young growing up Klingon but then being orphaned and growing up away from that, despite his new parents trying to keep him connected to it. As such, he's ended up with a VERY idealized version of it in his head, which doesn't match the murkier reality of Klingon culture. So, now Worf has this thing that is both very important to his personal identity, and also important to him because he feels let down by the reality of Klingon culture that he probably feels he needs to carry on despite that. I can see that being something he very much wants to share with his son because Worf's culture helped Worf in his youth from feeling seperate from his species, and now Alexander is going through the same thing. But he's also trying to respect K'heylar's wishes Alexander NOT be immirsed totally in it. But Worf probably also wants Alexander to be part of this stuff so that at least his idealized version of Klingon culture would continue. And of course, he's got all this stuff in his head, he's not able to see what Alexander wants. But it seems by the end they've reached a compromise.

Nolan

Fun fact, the actor who played future Alexander is the same man who played the Romulan admiral Jarok from the Defector, James Sloyan. Oh oops, I see that somone already said that.

Mike

It took me a sec but then I remembered that this was a timey-wimey episode. The actor was the same person that played Admiral Jarok from "Defector," James Sloyan. They really are great character actor. Worf getting learn about his future son is a gift that I think he realized during his final conversation. Glad to see the character growth and I feel his is one of those characters, along with Miles & Seven, that get the most story and change. And, i'm here for it!

Christian Rennie

Good episode! I love Worf, but he is not the best dad. He's also not the worst either lol. Honestly though that makes his character a more believable in my opinion.

Jonathan Emery

So interesting to see this episode and then the way Worf is in "Picard". I was hoping you'd two might recognize the actor who played the adult Alexander. It was James Sloyan, who played the Romulan defector in the third season "The Defector". Alexander does show up again in DS9. FYI, having to recently redownload your Trek reactions after a loss of a HD, I can attest that the links for all the seasons are working.

Bruce Bromley

On the whole "bad dad" thing, I've definitely known a fair number of people who treat their own kids very differently from others (and not in a good way). I have an in-law who is incredibly smart and successful. Like a leader in his industry. Everybody loves him because he's kind, generous and understanding. Except his own kids, who have a very complicated relationship with him. He's gentle and understanding with other people and children because he has no expectations of them. With his own kids, he wants them to be successful in the same way that he is and he finds them to be constant disappointments. It's really sad. They all left home as soon as they could and moved far away. And they don't like hate him or anything, but they just can't be around him. And he genuinely doesn't understand how everybody can like him so much except for his immediate family.

Magnecite is quite real! It’s MgCO3 which is also called magnesium carbonate. You have probably walked on it somewhere since it’s used in flooring, and can also be used to make heat resistant materials like the lining in furnaces or pottery kilns.

Brian Moore

I think "bad dad" is fair. I love Worf, he is a great character, he has the best of intentions, he wants only the best for Alexander, but consider: if your son travels back in time to persuade his past self to choose a different path in life, all so that he won't feel like he has failed you, well.. you're probably not a great dad.

michael mccafferty

Many fans have dubbed Season 7 "The Family Season".

David Brown

Yep. We're in the middle of the "wrap up loose storylines/characters" part of the season. With what I would say are mixed results, but it is nice to see all of these folks for one last time.
