A MATTER OF TIME, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep9

Comments

The problem is that returning him back to his time now would actually impact the timeline since he knows details about the future. They are following the Prime Directive by keeping him in the 24th century.

Chrono Gamer

What a great sitcom that was!! Sadly forgotten today.

Kathy A

Since that happened in the 22th century, it must be much too late to try him for it now. ;)

Patrick Armbruster

I don’t think the “punishment” was too severe—they just had to arrest him since he was being charged with theft (and then suddenly attempted kidnapping and whatever he did to the actual professor, was it murder?) and give him due process. The time capsule’s disappearing was unexpected to Picard, but he just rolled with it. I could be wrong :)

Daniel Plummer

con man noun Slang. short for confidence man

Its pretty common knowledge the part of Rasmussen was written for and accepted by Robin Williams, who dropped out after scheduling problems.

Mark Chrisco

It's interesting to note how every single time he was with Data his reaction would change depending on if he were alone with him or not. When around other people he was jovial and attentive but alone he was cold, distant and not knowing exactly how "human, non-robotic and humane" he was that he was likely more on edge the more he was around him as in his own quarters he treated Data like C3PO instead of an equal. Later in Data's quarters after watching him work and converse with others he seemed a tiny more compassionate but still in his slithering and creepy way. Deanna Troi had very little scenes and interactions with him but after she out right stated to his face she didn't trust him she should've headed straight for a private meeting with Picard and Riker in the ready room and told them to keep an eye on him. Plus Data's vision as an android can't simply be limited to what is directly in front of him but peripherally as well. His head should've reacted once the "Professor" was out of sight of Data giving us a further hint he knew he was pocketing equipment other than later finding out it was missing.

Brad Barter

I have to say I’ve never really enjoyed this episode. Only seen it twice maybe? Found the guy really annoying.

Brett Delbridge

I think it was too dangerous to send him back with the knowledge he already had

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

This is a great standalone episode. The debate between Rasmussen and Picard is definitely worth the price of admission. Rewatching the episode now, Rasmussen seems a lot less affable and a lot more sinister. He refers to Worf as “primitive,” refers to Troi as “Picard’s empath” (and adds that “some of my best friends are empaths” line), treats Data like a servant and totally disrespects Geordi’s disability (asking him how he “likes” an accommodative device that literally allows him to see). He sees himself as charming, but most of the crew realize he’s just a shitty person well in advance of his ruse being exposed.

Matthew Zeidman

In the episode he says the original pilot “had the misfortune of meeting me”. So at the very least he left the pilot stranded somewhere and even took his clothes but he most likely killed him.

Brian Hakala

I always assumed the original pilot of the time ship was mortally injured or otherwise incapacitated and Rasmussen just helped himself to it. I guess it’s also possible he killed the pilot. He didn’t seem to have any qualms about shooting Data.

Matthew Zeidman

Love Matt Frewer. He is also fantastic in the original "The Stand" miniseries. I think you'd both enjoy the "Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into the Future" series. I know your plate is full and wouldn't be able to react to the two seasons, but at least try to catch the British original pilot on your own time.

Bruce Bromley

It is a pillow from Startrek.com I gifted her a while back. It says "Make it Snow". 😁

Bruce Bromley

I’ve never thought of Picard keeping “the professor” in the future as dark. It’s eluded that he killed the original pilot of the time ship which was pretty dark in itself.

Brian Hakala

Never under estimate the ability to fool or manipulate people when you act like you know something they don't. Even future people can be fooled.

Jay Fleming

This was the only punishment possible. Letting him get back on “his” ship would mean he would just do it again.

Pendrew

He also might have had better luck had he not tried to loot the flagship of the Federation. He could have just stuck to New Jersey in the future or some settlement on a Federation colony. I'm betting he had some access to a database on that time pod thing to help him figure stuff out such as Worf being Klingon and such.

Henchman Twenty1

What's really interesting to me is how they present what looks like a complete TNG episode with one of the series' standard moral dilemmas, reaching its climax in the scene in Picard's ready room as he asks for future information, and then add an extra twist to the end. I can easily imagine a counterpart episode where Rasmussen is exactly who he says he is, and it would have been a good TNG episode. The added turn at the end only makes it better. (In fact it would not surprise me if I were to find out the episode was originally written that way, and they decided later on to add the twist about Rasmussen being from the past, perhaps thinking it was a bit too "normal" of an episode otherwise.)

Keith Goodnight

I would think it would be easier for a man from the future to fit in to an earlier era than the opposite. I mean, he is able to find his way around the ship, use the controls, use the computer and devices in his room. Not sure a man from the 22nd Century could fool people on a ship from the 24th into thinking he was from their future.

Mark Ten

I think the only thing that would have made Katrina more excited about this being a time travel episode is if the Tardis was what appeared on the view screen instead of the shuttle. 😄

Peter

The first time I saw this, about 20 mins in I yelled "Hey, WAIT! That's Max Headroom!!!" :D

Firefly24601

I wonder if they let Matt ad lib at all? There are some actors you just have to let loose and allow them to improvise on the spot and he seems like that type. That Red Shirt in sickbay looked like he got mauled. Did Data's cat get out again?

Henchman Twenty1

I'm trying to figure out what that picture of Picard is to Paula's left. It looks like it might be a pillow, but I couldn't tell.

Dan Crucy

The end has always seemed a little abrupt to me, but good episode overall.

Arek Schneyer

Really my only problem with this episode is Picard's willingness to indulge this guy. It seems out of character for him. And given the policy of not messing with the timeline I don't see him welcoming his involvement. Though if you skip past that, I can see him asking for help when things get desperate.

Joe Concepts

Shep is so adorable, like I said he reminds me of my first kitten. We had another older cat my step father owned and he was sweet. But my first kitten was an orange tabby. I refer to him as mine because I'm the only person he was nice to.

DarkAshtar

Whenever I see Matt Frewer my first thought is "Doctor Doctor". I may be incredibly alone in thinking that way. Which is a shame.

Gjermund Higraff

Matt Frewer is a freaking legend!

Bill

Interesting episode. Looking forward to seeing what you think of it.
