The Game, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep6

...... I lost The Game.......

Dan Williams

IRL, Marina Sirtis has said she does not like chocolate :/

Terry Mitchell

Yeah, I agree it makes you feel uncomfortable. I just don't think that's a bad thing. It's better than having them just act weird. And of course the only way to get Riker to try it would be if a sexy lady pushed him to try it. He would be more skeptical in any other situation. And then he just used his status as friend and first officer to get others to try it. And I don't think it's a "just say no" message, really. The problem wasn't that the game was addictive. It was that it was used as mind control. So the message is more that you should make informed decisions and not just go along because your friend insists. Make up your own mind. And I very much doubt Star Trek was suggesting people were actually addicted to games. It's more "what if?" I mean, they made several Star Trek games, with a few short ones that it might be fun to watch you guys react to.

Bluefox

Not... one of my favorite episodes. Good reaction, enjoyed it. But everything about it was, for me as well, uncomfortable.

Arek Schneyer

There are good parts to this episode but it is just such an 'american', 'reaganite/bush/clinton', 'evangelical/pentacostal', Just Say No propaganda piece. Don't let the weed and the sex before marriage get you! Your peers may think its cool and act all weird and different, but obey societal norms! They will try and get you to do a weed and have a sex! Like mindless zombies they'll try and infect you too! Even your newly introduced cute/smart girlfriend may get taken over by their brainwashing! Watch out! Don't let her touch you where jesus doesn't like it! (If you are behaving yourself, upholding our norms and mores, like good little white middle americans you can do a nice 50s rose-tinted kiss and over the clothes touching in the end though)

Pirateman

Hi there! It's Kat. I've been on a bit of a self journey when it comes to my pronouns. Currently I use She/They. With Mikaela it feels even more right/comfortable to use they/them though! I appreciate you asking :) - Kat

Time Lord

Maybe this will be answered by the video, but I notice that you referred to Kat as "they" (And also that you just edited the post). Does Kat identify as non-binary, or is that just a generic singular they? Or is it possibly referring to Kat and Paula, and just is a bit confusingly worded?

Bluefox

Given the time and societal concerns when this episode was made in 1991, I'm more in the "we intended this as an allegory for drug addiction and peer pressure" camp than anything sexual, but I can totally see the other interpretation, what with the hilariously uncomfortable close-ups of O-faces.

Timothy Hennon

"Don't worry, Commander Riker. Dr. Crusher will just replicate a shot of penicillin like she always does for you and you'll be back to peeing painlessly in no time!"

Timothy Hennon

Totally agree, it helps put you in the situation with the character.

Josh G

I always thought it was made to make you feel uncomfortable. It makes wesley's story better I feel because you can sort of feel as uncomfortable as he does.

Sorestlor

Paula FTW with the Wordle comparison. I knew I couldn’t be the only one who thinks of this episode whenever I see 25 percent of my Facebook feed filled with Wordle scores.

Matthew Zeidman

Wesley trying to dodge the game like someone today trying to decline the vaccine.

Verteron

Robin has to be 4-5 years older than Wes. Way to Go!

Mark Chrisco

My first "Warped" Patreon video and it's this one 😂 Perfect.

Bill

Always liked this episode, but, the opening with Riker has always made me cringe. Not sure why, but, it does.

Mark Chrisco

In my head, when Riker tells Troi he brought back something from Risa, my head automatically makes Troi say, "again?"

Nolan

On the Gals's Discord there is a channel for each reaction series specifically dedicated to talking about spoilery stuff. The "newb" for that show doesn't go into those channels.

Firefly24601

I think they did a really good job with the lines between Crusher and Leffler to give them younger casual dialogue, have different direction than the adults and yet still not seem too disjointed.

fcast17

I'm not the first to say this but the way people keep saying "it's something Commander Riker brought back from Risa" always makes me laugh. I hated the early Wesley saves the day episodes but this one works really well. Wil Wheaton feels like he's growing in confidence as an actor and he's played a young man discovering himself really well. Plus he and Ashley Judd do have great chemistry,

Joel Featherstone

I disagree that it was inherently sexual. The same dopaminergic pleasure circuit, i.e. originating in the nucleus accumbens, is the modulator of most pleasure responses sex, drugs, food, shopping, etc. I'm guessing Katrina has never seen anyone inject heroine. That response that the game puts out is pretty spot on with the response of someone just injecting heroine. I never took this episode as being inherently sexual but alluding to addiction in general.

Andrew Ramos

Oh, and since I don't see it mentioned, Marina Sirtis who plays Troi HATES Chocolate.

Nolan

Laforge's visor sees all spectrums of light including what the game was emitting, there is no reason why it wouldn't work on him.

Andrew Ramos

I liked how Katrina mentioned the impact of Star Trek on sci-fi movies like Alien; of course Alien itself hugely influenced the sci-fi genre. The writers of The Expanse novels & TV series have often remarked about how greatly Alien and Aliens inspired their own creative output. Thomas Jane (who was one of the primary actors on The Expanse) has a hilarious story about the time when his parents took him to see Alien in the theater when it was first released in 1979 - he was only 8 years old! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzG_x0fnQSQ&t=180s

Gaius Frakking Baltar

This one is generally not rated highly - but, honestly,I'd rather choose this to watch than many, more highly regarded stories, from this season;because it's so much (tacky) fun!

Ian Smith

One thing that’s always bothered me about this one is they never explained how LaForge was able to be affected by it. You’d think the VISOR would’ve made it so it didn’t work on him.

Brian Hakala

This won't be the last time Trek goes to the "awkward orgasm well." I wonder how Ri got caught by the game. Personally, I do not understand the aversion to feeling uncomfortable. This episode was TOTALLY purposeful in it's evoking that feeling. It did the job it meant to. Compare to Galaxy's Child which went to a VERY uncomfortable place that was not at all intended and is weaker for it. I just don't get when people at large go after art or expressions that are designed to evoke responces from an audience. In one on one interactions that's not okay at all, but performances are different. There've been things I've watched where they've made a crack about something that I struggle with, or a story is about MS and I feel leery because of my journey with that disease, or I get offended by some remark about religion in a show cause of my journey with that, and while I feel uncomfortable or offended, I know those feelings in that one-to-many interaction is more on me than it is on the performer. They don't know my story, nor my context, they are going for a BROAD response, and I have to look at the context THEY are working from. Yep, that thing I struggle with DOES look that way to the outside, yep, MS IS a scary thing to face, especially when you only know the worst. Yep Christianity HAS historically been horrible and influenced by awful people and been manipulative. A show may make me feel a certain way, but that's just part of the experience. I cannot call something that does that "bad" based solely on how it made me feel. All I can say is that it provided an opportunity for discussion. And there are, of course and as with all things, exceptions.

Nolan

My friends and I thought this episode was absurd when it first aired. "I'm on level 47," was our go-to "this is weirdly/unnecessarily sexual" reference for years. Also, the butt-headed aliens in their phallic ship was just the icing on the cake. That said, I really did enjoy the final action sequence when Wesley is on the run from the entire crew. It kind of reminded me of the time the former soldier with PTSD (Roga Danar from The Hunted) evaded the crew. I like to imagine that his tactics inspired Wesley. I also enjoyed his relationship with Robin. But yeah, I often skip this one because the vibe definitely makes me uncomfortable and I can't quite handle the cringe factor. Looking ahead, with a couple exceptions, I feel like we're heading into the mid-season lull that you two mentioned an episode or two ago, but then some really great stuff. Is there somewhere that we can discuss those things without spoiling Kat? I'd love to speculate with other fans about what Paula's favorite episode is that isn't the one that fans might think it is.

R. Chang

Uhg. Pass. Another 'Wesley Crusher saves the day' episode. This whole scenario gives me nightmares. I don't creep out too easily, but this sorta thing does for me. Another example of security sucks on the Federation flagship. I find it hard to believe that Worf and Picard would play that game unless they were forced. And once again Guinan is MIA. Would that game have effected her too? Like Gandalf, she is conveniently absent when convenient to the plot.

Henchman Twenty1

And Space Seed and Star Trek II and Star Trek III...

Joe Concepts

Invasion Of The Gameboy Body Snatchers! Thanks so much Katrina... now I cant get that alien's description out of my head. But yeah, I remember when this episode originally aired and it made me cringe at the time. I usually skip this one, but the Robin/Wesley B plot it pretty cute.

Mark Ten

And now you should watch ''star trek the undiscovered country" before you move on to the next episodes of tng.

Kris Nimitz

This was always a rough one for me. Nice to see Wesley, and some nice character moments, but seems boring otherwise for me. But then again, it has young Ashley Judd, which can be enough to twist my arm.

Joe Concepts

To be fear, an episode like Galaxy's Child makes everyone uncomfortable but that was clearly not intended.

Mike

The sexual aspect of the game was uncomfortable but didnt bother me. Using sexual desire to manipulate people seems to be a common practice in espionage and covert operations.

Stephen Kronfeld

I don’t understand why episodes that make you uncomfortable are bad, that’s the whole point of them. Sometimes shit gets weird and you have to deal with it as best you can. I always enjoyed this episode, it’s a nice fun episode in the middle of serious ones.

Andrew Hogan

I think the uncomfortable cringy parts were on-purpose. So if you feel all squeamish about it, it worked.

Bob Hughes

Imo the fact that this episode is uncomfortable I think shows how well the writing and acting was, as I beleive it was intended to wierd us out. I just forgot how on the nose everyone was about all the face orgasms everywhere haha. Idk how they pulled this off back then.

Mike
