Another live birth. Real new born baby. Wonder what happened to them.

Dan Williams

As far as the kids are concerned, where is Sisko when you need him.

Desmond Griffin

Lieutenant Monroe died much in the same way Captain Garrett did in “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” A panel blowing up in someone’s face seemed to be the writers’ go-to gory, dramatic death.

Matthew Zeidman

Has there been a discussion on whether DS9 is on the cards, either when they catch up when it ran with TNG or afterwards? I vaguely remember some reason that put them off doing it but nothing specific.

Joel Featherstone

Boy, I really hope you all decide to do DS9 when the time comes... this episode really does feel almost like a DS9 prequel, not just with the O'Brien/Ro plot (he feels very much like DS9 O"Brien here) but also how everyone is spread out more around the ship rather than sitting on the bridge for large chunks of time. It's a different energy.

Way, way back in high school (early 80's) the style for us fellas was polyester plaid button-down shirts and corduroy pants (it could get a little noisy in the hallways between classes). My next-door neighbor wanted to get rid of some older clothes that were still in good condition from the 70's. They fit me perfectly so I started wearing them to school. Note: I was very socially awkward and near the bottom of the social ladder, not exactly a trendsetter. At first I got teased and even picked on due to my non-conformist attire. But then, little by little, I noticed more and more of the student body were wearing 70's style clothing. Probably their parent old clothes. I wasn't trying to be different. The clothes were in good shape, fit me well and were free, but nonetheless other kids copied me, including the ones who had made fun of me for it. No wonder I've never attended a class reunion. Well, that and the fact that I never got rich and famous to rub their faces in it. Actually, I'd never do that as it's just not me.

Henchman Twenty1

Henchman 21, you always make my day lol. I get the the pleasure of encountering you on the Geordy Nerd's hub and here as well. I know I've probably said this multiple times always running into friends from another fandom lmao

DarkAshtar

Agree with you 100%

Colin 3of5

I still have my college jacket from 1984-1988, which is a winter jacket in the school colors with Marquette Band on the back. I haven’t been able to fit in it for a while, but I can’t bring myself to throw it away.

This episode is very interesting watching it again for two reasons. The inference to a Picard story point and a Troi srory line in the future are placed here. Especially the Troi one( no spoilers) it connects to this episode perfectly. So much so I don’t even believe the writers on the show intended this to fit so well.( maybe they did if so props!) Can’t wait to discuss it later when it comes up.

Lamar Bradford

Aren't you supposed to exhale when air evacuates an area?

Adam Brown

My favorite bit on rewatching is how Worf was ignoring everything as hard as he could, directly over Keiko's shoulder, in the Riker and Data touching the bump scene.

Kevin Tipcorn

The episode being referred to is one that I definitely came to enjoy more with repeat viewings than I had initially. There's one aspect of it that I didn't pick up on immediately the first time through, and I think it prevented me from fully connecting to what was happening.

David Aspmo

I'm also assuming I know which episode Paula is referring to, and know what she means. I always thought it was a good science fiction story, but not necessarily a good TNG story.

Joe Concepts

Really cool episode. I like that we get to see characters paired up that normally wouldn’t be. I laughed out loud when Katrina said that kids can be “raging pieces of shit” haha

Brian Hakala

I enjoy this episode! it's super stressful, and I always end up skipping some parts, but it's wonderful. The part with Picard and the Kids is my favorite.

Arek Schneyer

Don''t worry Paula, I still have shoes from Jr. High. I use them to take out the trash. As for how fashion works ala, setting up fads, I'd suggest the documentary "Merchants of cool" all about how scouts will look around to see what the NOT fashionable kids are wearing so they can then make it the new trendy style. How ripped jeans went from an indication of working class and labor into an appropriated brand choice style. I low-key love this episode. It manages to have countless plot points balanced with character interplay and development and a bit of world building too. And it's all small scale and NOT about some apocalyptic threat to the universe. This is where Star Trek excels, in the small moments. Paula, looking at some of the future episodes this season, I think it would be prudent to give Katrina a trigger warning for episodes 12 and 16. I think those might hit hard and don' want anyone unprepared. Great reaction video guys! I might not comment a lot over the next 6 weeks, and not at all the first two weeks of march. I have an eye surgery coming up and can't wear my contacts in the lead up to it, nor am I allowed to look at computer screens for the 2 weeks following the surgery. Hope to watch what I missed later!

Nolan

I always imagined a story of the future, where Admiral Picard personally delivered orders appointing her Captain of a starship

Mark Chrisco

I’m guessing not with all the exploding consuls and transporter malfunctions. Don’t even get me started on the Holodeck.

TB

I find the whole idea of a ship's counselor taking command during a crisis ridiculous. Troi is clearly not prepared for this, and why should she be? This is not her job. I'd probably think just like Ro in this episode.

Dan Crucy

The Enterprise looks significantly less cool with its lights off.

Dan Crucy

Bizarrely, a whole slew of TNG fanfic stories featuring the little girl Marissa began to appear online after this episode aired. She became known as "Marissa Picard" in one of the stories when Jean Luc legally adopted her following the death of her parents when they perished in the line of duty. Can you imagine JLP doing such a thing? https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/MarissaPicard

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Love this episode. It's kind of a small encapsulation of how great this show is and how great every single character is. I feel the show sometimes forgets this, but when it remembers that all of its characters are great and uses them, magic happens. And there is another thing that gets overlooked because it is kind of Star Treks thing, but I still want to point out because I love it. No one is incompetent. There isn't some rando officer that is an idiot that accidentally makes things worse as is a trope with many disaster films. Every single plot line is filled with people stuck in a terrible situation, and each of them is working the problem. Even Worf who has zero experience is doing the best he can with Keiko. They also could have made Ro out to be more of a villain, but they made it a point to have Troi call her plan out as a good one, and one that could have easily been the correct one. It's just a great episode of television and Star Trek.

Anthony Wickizer

This is one of my favourite episodes. I wanna say a bunch of stuff but it’s all probably spoiler material. Found it a bit unlikely there were no medical officers in 10 forward and also where was Guinan?

Brett Whittaker

So the panel to repressurize the shuttle bay is on the opposite side of the bay from the panel to open the outer doors. Great design feature. Do they still have OSHA in the future?

Henchman Twenty1

As the uncle of a bunch of kids I like spending time with, I know you don't have to have kids or want to have kids to like them. Especially when you can have fun with them and let their parents deal with the hard stuff! :)

Joe Concepts

I like the Troi/Ro/O'Brien plot here. You could understand Ro thinking, "Wait the COUNSELOR is in charge?" but O'Brien knows rules and regulations to follow. Ro is definitely wrong to talk and act the way she does about this stuff. And they're definitely implying she thinks Troi shouldn't be in charge. Yes, it's her character, be she wasn't giving her proper respect, and of course you can't be yelling at a superior. I feel like the correct way even in a real life military situation would be how Troi does it. She can make a final decision, but defers to the others' expertise to give their opinions and go with what they say. And in the real military the opinion of a veteran non-com like O'Brien would hold a lot of weight. (In Trek world, those ranks aren't really explored right, but Ro outranks him.)

Joe Concepts

What I imagine Riker’s inner monologue is at the end of this episode: “Why is everyone coming for my job today? I’m a great First Officer. I’m likable, funny, and I’ve helped discover several new alien STDs. I should’ve taken that command of the Aries three years ago.”

TB

"Subspace Distortion", the 24th Century equivalent of dad running over a bike that the kids left in the driveway

Mark Ten

Original series callback: Beverly tells Geordie that they'll need a few days of Hyronalin treatments, which was from classic Trek as a treatment for exposure to certain types of radiation. I think it was first mentioned in "The Deadly Years" (S2 - E11).

Henchman Twenty1

The reaction and the episode footage is in much better sync. Good job. : )

David Brown

I think I know exactly what upcoming episode Paula is referring to in the end discussion. I feel the exact same way about it, but I won't go into it since it could be a spoiler if I'm correct. I get why it's so beloved but boy I always thought it was boring. Great reaction to Disaster! It's always been one of my favorites, seeing the crew mixed up and trapped in different areas of the ship. The Enterprise really is a character of its own and this episode makes good use of it. We need more Beverly/Geordi scenes!

DC

You'll notice that Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) is getting a more prominent role, along with Kieko, as the producers are preparing to transplant them to DS9 when it launches. He was my favorite character on that show along with Odo and Sisko.

Henchman Twenty1

talking about clothing and such at the start: I've been wearing ties all my adult life as a style choice. I once tried to confuse my guests at home by changing ties each time i had to leave the room for a moment

MrEvers

Ah, yes. Definitely reminiscent of the big budget disaster movies of the 70's and 80's which I saw at the drive-in theaters as a kid. All it needed was Lorne Greene or Steve McQueen trying to get people to safety with a bunch of panicky idiots getting themselves killed. I used to record these episodes on VHS and would label them with both the actual titles and my own more descriptive titles to help me remember what it was about. The alternate title for this one was "Disaster - Innnnn - Spaaaace!"

Henchman Twenty1

A fave! Also, I didn’t remember that this was Ro’s second appearance. I guess though it makes sense though. It a very dramatic way to introduce her as a full blown officer with a mix of rebel and thoughts of protocol and triage to save as many lives as possible, although admittedly there’s likely some self-preservation to her actions.
