Comments

The differences in pronunciation and colour can easily be explained away by dialectical variations and region.

Josef Schiltz

A big part of the look of the Cardassians is because Marc Alaimo has a long neck.

Matthew Baur

No, more like a year and 9 months, as DS9 aired and runs chronologically alongside TNG's last two seasons, starting mid-way through S6, So I was counting until the overlap happened. And it's so good watching both shows that way.

Nolan

👽👗🔫💣🚀💥👍

Brett Delbridge

So we have exactly 1 year of TNG

Brett Delbridge

A certain 'Tailor' perhaps?

Henchman Twenty1

They all got transferred to the USS Cannon Fodder, a Miranda class ship.

Henchman Twenty1

@DarkAshtar - Why, hello there. Yeah, I saw some of your comments here after I joined. Seeing as the gals also watch Rick & Morty Which (I don't watch) I wonder if they'd do The Venture Bros. sometime? Probably unlikely, but I'd still love to see their perspective on it. Paul only has 13 episodes left in the show and that's it until the movie comes out.

Henchman Twenty1

a familiar face and I happen to agree I love DS9

DarkAshtar

I feel like Paula can give a way a little bit more about how this connects to later shows. It's really a huge part of the premise, so not really a spoiler.

Joe Concepts

That's always been the one major question in this episode. What was his crew doing? Was he lying to them all?

Joe Concepts

FYI, Bob Gunton’s singing here is not a one-off—he was the original Juan Peron in Broadway’s Evita. He has a gorgeous voice.

Kathy A

Turns out, Maxwell was right. And that's not a spoiler...

BlackOpsElf

So I counted and there are 52 episodes of TNG left before where DS9 would start. There's also exactly 52 episodes of The Legend of Korra in the Avatar series... so given the three week season breaks the gals like to take, and the end of ATLA, it's entirely possible that the gals would have an open series slot for more Trek action... (Also, watching them concurrently in chronological order is SO fulfilling)

Nolan

Yeah, Hok'Tar, Brett, DS9 starts half-way through Season 6 of TNG. Specifically, after the episode Chain of Command Part 2. That episode aired on 21 December 92, and Emissary aired on 3 January 93.

Aaron Thorpe

+5 to Katrina for the “Warp 9 that b***h” comment. That was a full-fledged, instinctive fan reaction. Fun fact, Marc Alaimo and Armin Shimmerman appeared together in the 1989 sci-fi B movie “Arena.”

Matthew Zeidman

Maxwell was defenitely wrong in his actions, and Picard was correct in all regards, ethical and practical, to stop him and proceed with cautious, suspicious diplomacy. That said, I'm all aboard for "fuck Cardassia". I reject all half-assed attempts of the writers to collectively soften or redeem super space nazi society (individual redemption is fine). Also, I pray we start DS9 as early as "continuitively" possible, I can't WAIT for "Duet".

JXTN

Next episode I would say is exactly the mid point of the entire 7 seasons

Brett Delbridge

I think my absolute favourite character is a Cardassian

Brett Delbridge

More like 6 isn’t it?

Brett Delbridge

They need to start watching DS9 when season 5 of TNG starts. That's when the crew of DS9 was assigned to that space station

Hok'Tar

Yeah never thought of that

Brett Delbridge

So the Cardassians wouldn't know their ship's capabilities.

John

Never understand why they limp along at warp 4 when they can go warp 9

Brett Delbridge

I would say there is no plan written in stone regarding DS9. Previous communications on the subject had them leaning away from it, but nothing has been finalized.

Firefly24601

I think they tried to address that with the loyalty speech at the end, but yeah, I agree. Some unanswered questions.

Eric

Perhaps, but Picard was under orders to preserve the peace at all costs. It was still less than a year after the Borg where they lost an entire fleet of ships at Wolf 359. Starfleet needs time to rebuild. A worse war later may even be preferable to an ill-timed one now that they aren't equipped to fight.

John

My fav of the franchise! ♥

Henchman Twenty1

Oops. Yeah. What you said. Still though, has there been any discussion by the gals on the subject of their plans, if any?

Henchman Twenty1

It's midway though Season 6 (right after 6x10 & 6X11: Chain of Command), not Season 5.

David Brown

(Chanting) DEEP SPACE 9! DEEP SPACE 9! DEEP SPACE 9! When the time comes, please.

David Brown

I just joined the Patreon today. This episode serves as the first of several TNG episodes that begins to set up the backstory for Deep Space Nine as the Cardassians are for the most part the primary antagonists of that show. With that being said, are there plans watch and react to DS9 as well? If so, my recommendation would be to begin where it started in the franchise running consecutively with TNG starting about midway through season 5 [Edit: Make that season 6]. There is some crossover with the events of both shows and an actual sorta minor crossover episode or two.

Henchman Twenty1

The only thing missed in this episode is the element of the crew. Were they all with Captain Maxwell? If so Starfleet has a big problem.

Mark Chrisco

Not that Picard was in any way wrong for wanting to preserve the peace, or thinking it was in the best interests of both parties. But if you could have gone back and gotten the French and English to invade Germany after they they sent their army back into the rienland, yeah you'd have started a war. But would have stopped a far worse one coming. Maybe Picard was Chamberlain?

EricH86

Yeah, the ship they stopped at the end pretty much confirmed Maxwell was right all along. He handled it in the worst way possible, but he was right about the threat.

John

What a great episode. I am so glad Chief O'brien got a bigger role in this episode. For being such a small role in ST:TNG he was always one of my favorites. Him questioning his feelings and trying to figure out if the way he is feeling is okay, can he justify his feeling. I think it shows what a good person he is.

e com

I agree, and for spoilery reasons I won’t go in depth, but it makes for great debates on why people develop hatreds for each other. I too would be interested to hear her feeling on this after watching DS9 in its entirety, or having Paula discuss how she feels, since she’s finished that series.

Andrew Hogan

My favorite thing about this episode is the way the issue of the supposed Cardassian treachery was handled. Captain Maxwell wasn't just some idiot out for revenge. He was probably right about what he thought the Cardassians were doing, but he obviously didn't handle it the right way. I enjoyed that nuance.

Jeff Seely

Been a long while I saw this episode, forgot how good it is.

MrEvers

I wonder how Kat will feel about this episode as we encounter more of the Cardassians.

EricH86

DS9 is also known as Keeping Up With The Cardassians.

Jarrod Wild

Great one. And it's a first tiny hint of what's coming in the next series.

Joe Concepts

One of my favorites of this season. Not only do we get a closer look at O’Brien, it starts to set up DS9 and we get great performances by Colm, Patrick and guest star Bob Gunton.
