Time of The Doctor, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S7ep16

Christopher Eccleston would've been the same age as Tom Baker was when he played the doctor. People just looked older back then.

Matthew Beckford

Am I misremembering or did 11 say "Amelia Pond" when Clara asked "Who's Amelia?" in the original airing?

T.C. Thompson

I do want to say that the term "companion" is much more of a fandom term, it IS used in the series on occasion (Like Hurt calling Tennant and Smith that in the 50th) but it is very rare to hear, I actually don't think that Rory and Amy were EVER called companions by 11. They typically use words that mean the same or similar, unless they have a more personal relationship like River or Susan. There is still something going on with 11 not knowing what to call Clara, though I think he was going to say "girlfriend" as a reference to the beginning of the episode, then he realized Tasha might get a bit disgruntled at that and had to slam the verbal brakes, stopping himself from talking is NOT a strength of 11 (or any incarnation TBH).

T.C. Thompson

I think you will really enjoy Capaldi at first i did not like Capaldi and missed matt smith but he ended up becoming one of my favourite doctors he gets better as the episode's go on

Series 7 is what made Matt Smith my doctor, I love those purple clothes and kind old eyes. I had a really hard time adjusting to Capaldi. One of the most important traits of the doctor (to me) is his seemingly boundless compassion and I feel like that was missing or scaled back with Capaldi..

Torstein Skurve

I am with you on Capaldi. Even when the writing didn't work his acting still pushed though the bad episodes during his tenure.

Ravjeet B

Paula, if it make you feel better, when I learned your age, I felt the the exact opposite than how you felt when you learned Jenna Colman age. it was really surprising to find out you are only a year younger then me, I assumed it was a lot more. you look like you are in your twenties.

tal goren

This episode actually made Ten regeneration angst more understandable, since we now know that he thought it was the last time he ever going to regenerate.

tal goren

Capaldi is in my opinion the very best Doctor of New Who. So excited to see what Paula thinks!

Einar Sigurðsson

wtf 8 years I feel old now :(

Grelk

Nearly 8 years later and this episode still chokes me up. 11 is my favorite.

Great reaction again! I waffle between who is MY nuwho Doctor. Smith and Capaldi are both amazing and like Katrina I fell in love with Capaldi almost immediately. No mention of a break before season 8 so are we starting right away? If so, Yayyyy!

My Day: -Leaves work(Thursdays are always rough, thankfully these episodes also drop on Thursdays) -Picks up food -Puts on comfort narwhal hoodie -Cries into french fries My favorite regeneration scene even though I love them all. Also, that moment when you can see The Doctor and Paula coming to the same realization at the same time when the planet is named. Want to say thank you Galifrey Gals, I always find myself looking forward to these videos.

Though I had some problems with the pacing of this episode when it first aired, Eleventh's speech at the end really brought me to tears. To this day, Matt Smith is and probably always will be my Doctor.

This story has definitely grown on me over the years. Obviously, it was a bit hard to follow up 'Day of the Doctor' and I know a lot of Moffat's energy was more on the 50th than this one, but over the years I've come to have a soft spot for this one. I especially loved Eleven goodbye speech on the TARDIS, especially as it was opposite of what I hated about Ten's regeneration angst and all his 'I'm going to die/A new man goes walking off...' stuff that made me so annoyed. This one acknowledged the incarnations he'd been before and didn't demonize incarnation to come. <3 And while I have mixed feelings about the apparition of Amy showing up at the end (because poor Clara gets sort of forgotten and shoved aside in that moment), my love for Amy takes over and that scene makes me cry (even if I always giggle because they're both bald). Plus, we'll obviously get Clara's 'regeneration feels' in her future stories, so there's that. Also, I loved the 'sneeze-regeneration' -- as bits of fandom called it at the time -- where Capaldi just popped up super suddenly. Definitely different than Ten's that went on and on and on. This one was more ripping off the band-aid. Anyway, looking forward to watching your reactions to this era. Capaldi is by far my fave new series Doctor (though I do love Matt Smith -- but then I'm a Moffat fangirl, so...) and I think he goes on such a wonderful journey as a character. Excited to see that through a new set of eyes. <3

Nicole Mazza

THAT ALWAYS MAKES ME CRY SO MUCH. 😢😢😢

Great reaction GalifreyGals! I think this episode would have benefitted from being a two parter. It flies through so many plot points there's barely any time to breath! I also think that Smith's monologue at the end was a bit self-indulgent. I get every actor wants to draw out their death scene but Eccelston is my favourite for being simple and genuine. Its also a bit of a strange double beat to see Smith regenerate explosively as an old man and then come back for a beat as a 'reset'? Convoluted... But I loved how it tied everything together from his era and left a blank slate. MY Doctor has arrived!

George Baxter

That goodbye speech will stay with me for the rest of my life, I believe, for I too, don’t like endings, so it gives me a sort of hope and motivation for what’s to come. I’d gladly tattoo that speech on me if I could.

Great reaction, as always, and a fine send off for Matt Smith. This is by far one of the best and most moving regeneration/farewell speeches in DW (both new and classic). The line about we’re all different people throughout our lives, and the importance of remembering all the people we’ve been, is profound on many levels, and true to all of us, not just Time Lords. So pleased Matt got to give a proper goodbye to the role. And I’m also glad Paula can accept the change, having seen a bit of Classic Who as well. So many people couldn’t seem to cope with the Doctor not being an attractive young man, whereas he/she had been a “grumpy old man” on numerous occasions in the past. Capaldi changes the dynamic of the role in a great way, I feel, in a way that I think was needed at this stage. He’s also a lifelong fan of the show, and was a prominent member of the Doctor Who fan club as a kid. He was also the same age as Hartnell was (55) when WH started in 1963. So looking forward to what’s to come. Take a deep breath, Paula!😉

Bossy psycho space nuns are also very ME, apparently. :)

What I absolutely love about this episode is how it tied all of 11th Doctor's storylines that started back in his very first episode - why Silence are named Silence, how the cracks were created, how he was supposed to die on Trenzalore. It was a clever way to end 11's story. And such a beautiful speech to say goodbye too. Now to the 12 th Doctor....took me a whole season to really like him, but he ended up being my 2nd favourite one after 11 :)

Ekkarin22

Eleven does do 'old' very very well

This episode marks the end of my personal favorite era of the show, the Matt Smith era. It's funny. Katrina mentioned immediately falling in love with Capaldi. That was me with Matt Smith, with the exception of his first scene at the end of The End of Time Pt II. I started watching the show in Tennant's era, and I thought no one could replace him as the Doctor, so when he regenerated, I hated Matt Smith and thought I would start to lose interest in the show going forward. Then, The Eleventh Hour aired and completely blew me away. I think it only took me four episodes of series 5 to admit to myself that Matt Smith was officially MY Doctor. I also just really enjoy Moffat's style of running the show. I know Moffat's pretty divisive, but I've always loved the complex, multi-seasonal arcs and twists that he brought to the table. I also find the emotional moments hit harder with Moffat than they did with RTD. So, yeah. This episode hit me like a ton of bricks back in the day and is still among the only episodes of TV that can consistently get me choked up on every rewatch. Capaldi is phenomenal, though. Probably my second favorite Doctor now. Though it took me a while to warm up to him because I was so bummed about losing Matt Smith for so long. Only when I started a rewatch of his seasons did I really start to enjoy Capaldi's incarnation a lot.

12's acomin! I do love 11's goodbye speech. 😢 I'm so happy you both laughed when The Doctor said he didn't get the poem. I do completely adore that moment. I love Matt playing an older fella. The nuance of his performance is just right I think. He does as well as Catherine Tate does as her Nan character, minus all the colourful language mind. 🤣 Which reminds me.... When Capaldi was cast... I did think for a sec, wait Malcom Tucker is going to be the new Doctor, how's that going to work exactly... 🤣 I agree, he instantly won we over. Actually much like the previous 3 did.

Daryl

He's definitely a great Doctor

LaRoy Murrell

To be fair, (at least in my opinion) at least of your biggest criticisms of Moffat here was started by Davies. While Moffat did "insert" a Doctor himself w/ the War Doctor, if you're going by the show "cannon", RTD is the one who "inserts" a regeneration without changing the Doctor, and tbh, it makes much more sense to "count" that as an actual regeneration than not, otherwise its like it never even happened. That's just my opinion though. Also about the regeneration energy, my thought was always "at least he used it to blow up some Dalek ships this time instead of his own" ;)

Ryan Lake

Great reaction gals! Matt Smith was a great Doctor, but now we are on to MY Doctor. Capaldi is incredible

Ryan Denoven

If I had to pick one, I'd probably say this is my favorite episode of Doctor Who. There's so many little references and tie-ins to practically everything in Matt Smith's run - it's definitely worth several rewatches. So glad you finally got here, and looking forward to Capaldi!

Ryan Lake

Context: Matt Smith is my Doctor. By far my favourite. I was doing fine during his good bye speech to Clara (and the audience). I was holding in the tears pretty well. And then Amy said "Raggedy man..."

Opti_Frog

Matt Smith will always be my Doctor.

Jay Willis

Augh, another episode I'm so torn on. On one hand, Clara and the Doctor are amazing, together and separately. The acting is incredible. The Doctor and kids always warms my heart. And yet...using regeneration energy like laser weapons? Grasping at straws in order to make the Doctor you're writing for "actually" the 13th instead of Eleven like he's supposed to be so you can be the one to play with the whole "regeneration limit" stuff instead of leaving it for someone else to have the chance to explain it? The creepy/infantile jokes about the Doctor and Clara having to get naked in public? So infuriating. You get these snippets of what the show could be...and then Moffat turns into a 13-year-old bad fanfic writer and everything gets muddled. Seemingly at random half the time. Infuriating AND frustrating. Had it just been the latter, I could have easily just walked away from the show and given up on it, but he has these moments of brilliance. I feel like the teacher who has to tell some parents that their child is smart, but he isn't applying himself.

Scribbles

Thus we have arrived at my favorite doctor, though it takes him a while to become my favorite. There are some interesting episodes ahead.

Arek Schneyer

I'm literally re-subscribing to watch Paula's reaction to the end of this era
