Brain of Morbius, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! Classic Ep4

"They do a lot of hiding around corners" - A common feature of Classic Who is that the villains all have poor peripheral vision

I love that you watched *this* episode. This is the one I most remember from my childhood. It is the quintessential Tom Baker episode. The way he says "ding dong" when showing up. Oh my. There is no better way to get to know Tom Baker than this episode.

Thats good....i mean its sad, but good, because im not the only one without link ^^

Did the video get taken down off of Wave? There's no embedded video on that page when I click the link.

I'm thing the original version of this story must have been an influence on Steven Moffat. The finished version was an almost top to bottom rewrite from Robert Holmes (back then the equivalent of the showrunner role was split between a producer and a script editor - with Holmes as script editor responsible for generating story ideas and doing whatever was needed to fix up and polish scripts). And the whole mashup between Frankenstein and cult horror They Saved Hitler's Brain is down to him. The original story from Terrance Dicks featured Morbius as terribly maimed in a spaceship crash and instead of Solon there was a service robot being stupidly literal in its programming and luring people to their deaths to use them as spare parts for rebuilding Morbius (also explaining why the monster is just a bodge job - the robot has no aesthetic sense).

I was pleasantly surprised when this came up. Knowing another original-era story was coming, I had somehow convinced myself it would be "Terror of the Zygons" in preparation for the 50th. Which is a great story, but of course has a legendary special-effects-related shortcoming that I was nervous at the ladies seeing. Well done to those who were involved in recommending one of the best of the Gothic Horror season.

Vernon Harbin

Pretty sure that happened in one of the Cushing Frankenstein Hammer films, too. But I can't remember exactly. There was definitely the bit where Cushing wanted the brain of a scientist, but he fell off the balcony, landing on his head, which damaged the brain, but that's not exactly the same thing! LOL

P.s., glad y"all enjoyed your trip into classic, I think you're done for now? However, if not, and if still taking suggestions .... The Deadly Assasin gets my shout, some nice panopticon action ..... 😜 P.s. Or alternately for a different Doctor experience, The Sea Devils, if not for some really great interaction between Jon Pertwee and his close friend Roger Delgado as well as a plot point which has certain similarities to the 4th season of Moffats' sherlock. 🙄

Surprised no one wrote the obligatory details about the random faces during the Morbius/Doctor mind wrestle scene. So, Katrina & Paula, during filming some members of the production crew thought it would be fun if they just put their faces into that montage. While a bit of fun to them, it caused a minor (nee major) fan trauma for years/decades, because the implication of that scene was that those were the Doctor's faces from BEFORE doctor No. 1, i.e. not Morbius faces, in other words the Doctor was not actually on his fourth regeneration at all but maybe a much higher number?? 🤯 So, many fans, for many years have just chosen to 'forget' or just ignore the scene, so much so it's kinda like the scene we all know about but never mention #shhhh 😜 it's kinda like one other famous line of dialogue in the TV movie which I won't repeat for fear of spoilers. Note, PLEASE don't Google that scene or face montage, can't say much but ....... #spoilers

I think this is the only story I've ever seen or read where a brain gets accidentally dropped on the floor.

Will

I think this was one that I read the Target novelisation of in the school library when I was a kid!

Will

This season of the fourth Doctor was proper gothic horror.

David Tomlinson

Oh my god, I'd never seen that interview clip before. Wow. My heart! 😭😭

Nicole Mazza

Oooh, excited to watch this reaction too! I <3 the Sisterhood of Karn! And this story is a stone-cold classic. :)

Tom and Lis are by far my favorite Doctor-Companion pairing. Their friendship and chemistry shine through, and they work so well together. SJ is no ankle-spraining wilting violet, and knows exactly when to take the lead in a situation (queue pretend faint as soon as she sees the Doctor’s been drugged, and her actions leading the escape attempt from the Thalls in Genesis of the Daleks). She also calls the Doctor out when needed, such as when he’s being childish. Lis Sladen has said in an interview that initially she felt a bit intimidated and on the outer when Tom first started after Jon Pertwee left, in part no doubt due to Toms rather flamboyant personality, but also he and Ian Martin (Harry Sullivan) got on instantly in their first episode. But they quickly became fast friends, and had this instinctive, almost symbiotic relationship. They would also ad-lib together at times. There’s this little scene in Pyramids of Mars where they walk into a room where a mummy is lurking. In the script they are to back out/exit before the mummy sees them. What they do is this improvised perfectly synchronized deadpan about face, turning on their heels in unison. A small thing, but so fun to watch, and they decided to do it just moments before the scene was shot. There’s a clip from an interview with Tom Baker, now closing in on 90, almost tearing up as he remembers his dear friend Lis - https://youtu.be/_u5uC_Z1jmY. The two of them were due to record some Big Finish audio adventures when Lis passed away. So sad that didn’t happen, as that would have been wonderful. It ended up Big Finish changed the scripts and got Louise Jameson (Leela, another great companion) instead for those recordings. Also, well spotted Kat, mimicking Tom’s nose tap as he did it - one of his signature gestures 😉.

1:07:36 ..... when it's your turn to clean the soft-server or clasic style fruit punch dispenser at work. :D

"This is some dark shit!" No kidding, Paula. Welcome to the "Hammer Horror" season of Doctor Who!

For those of us of a certain age, it's very difficult watching Philip Madoc in anything without seeing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYz2nPE0BCk

This was the VERY first Doctor story I ever saw. Recorded it by accident on VHS!
