I could not tell what the pez was until after you said it. It just looked like a blob and I thought it was the skin of evil Armus. Even though what I saw was a bluish blob with red eyes.

Ashley

Wow, the writers put a cute clue in the dialog when the Gatherer says, "you should know... you were there..." with Uta standing there... with her background. I see what you are doing clever writers...

Christian Rennie

Heck, he didn't even have to beam aboard. The smart thing to do would be to beam her off the ship.

John Smith

Firefly? That would be a first time watch for me... Never liked Nathan Fillion's screen presence, sorry. Watched Serenity, obviously didn't have the lore but, hey.

Graham Mills

It wouldn’t have hit home as much, that’s why they did it. The fans strong reaction proves that. Sure you could have restrained her, which would have been a smarter thing to do, but for the writers and/or director, they wanted to really send home the fact she was willing to die to complete her mission. Would you have reacted as strongly if, somebody had just grabbed her from behind and subdued her, I have my doubts, but because they killed her, it illicit a strong reaction of WHY? Which, in my estimation is the point.

Andrew Hogan

Agreed. He didn't have to disintegrate her. Somebody could have grabbed her from behind .

Mark Chrisco

I keep saying this and I will continue to. React to Babylon 5!!!!

Scott Archibald

I guess the transporter does not work in this episode, either.

Ken Quick

The art style is a bit reminiscent of Rick & Morty, too.

The Crazed Spruce

He tried stun. Twice. Didn't stop her, so he had to use the kill setting.

The Crazed Spruce

I hope we get double TNG episode weeks when they get breaks or finish DW.

Josh G

I guess stun setting does not work this episode

Einar Sigurðsson

If you liked Firefly, many feel that The Expanse is its spiritual successor, so it might be worth trying out sometime. The Expanse also tends to have a great fanbase that follow reactions which is nice as well, as reading their comments can be just as enjoyable as the show itself.

Malcolm Wolf

The Gatherers look like they could have gone on tour with Anthrax in 1989.

Jared Abrahamson

New Zealand like England was well behind Star Trek episodes when they were on TV. The reason at the time was the season needed to be finished so it could be sold as a whole. The wait time was rough certainly during a certain cliffhanger where I had to wait well over a year to find out what happened next.

Malcolm Wolf

DS9's pilot takes place before the TNG 2 parter in s6. I won't say why as don't want to post spoilers.

Peter

Lower Decks is a little rough at first but I found it started to improve around episode 3 and became a lot of fun. It’s easily the most upbeat and optimistic of new Trek although it’s also the one that feels like it has the lowest stakes, which makes sense given it’s premise. I will say that while I enjoyed it Lower Decks rarely made me laugh out loud. It’s more of a character focused dramedy like “Sports Night” than a joke machine. Lastly I think Paula’s sweater feels like Christmas because the white parts of the shoulders resemble falling show while the designs on the orange stripe evoke close up views of snowflakes.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

A lot of fans have argued that killing Yuta was unnecessary, that Riker could've kept stunning her, or beamed her back to the Enterprise. Fun fact: Volnoth, the older Gatherer killed by Yuta was played by Marc Lawrence. Born in 1910, he was the oldest actor to appear on both TNG and Deep Space Nine (he appeared in a different role in an episode of that series).

Neil McRae

Hey Paula....People have probably already said this but no the Wormhole from The Price is Not the Wormhole from Deep Space Nine. The Barzan Wormhole does not return but it referenced in a Star Trek Voyager episode. The Wormhole in Deep Space Nine is the Bajoran Wormhole but we won't meet the Bajorans until season 5.

Paul Ring

The BBC who at the time was broadcasting the various Star Trek series (TOS & TNG at the time) was about 18 months to 2 years behind the U.S. This annoyed me greatly, especially when series 3 of TNG came along, and started getting rave reviews in the magazines and I could only grind my teeth and wait. Then the tapes started to appear with 2 episodes at a go, and that started my tape collection off. Star Trek the animated series is on Netflix at the moment if anybody is interested in watching them.

Colin 3of5

There is a chronological watch list out there: "The Star Trek Chronology Project" that is really good for when the series are running concurrently. DS9's pilot takes place right after THAT two-parter in S6 of TNG.

Nolan

Paula made it seem the Wormhole from last Episode is the same as the Wormhole from DS9, but that is not the case. That specific Wormhole is later featured in one Episode of Star Trek Voyager. The DS9 one is a different one. And the only stable one.

Red Claw

I agree. Too many references to other Star Trek shows, not to mention a direct spoiler for one of the TNG movies at one point.

Jeff Seely

You guys should do Lower Decks after TNG for sure.

Magnús Davíð Magnússon

P.S. Love any and all rambling before, during and after the episodes!

Firefly24601

They both play antagonists(one comedic, one not so) in the movies that they are known for, that might be why they seem so similar.

Firefly24601

I have no memory of the plot, or title of this episode. But all the names, and a decent portion of the dialogue are SO familiar. It's really weird! Especially Marouk, her mannerisms and delivery are such a part of my non-specific memories....

Firefly24601

Kind of a spoiler for DS9's pilot talking about the Wormhole. I hope you do get around to watching it even though we're still years away if you watch it in proper relation to TNG. I'm a huge fan of DS9. Lower Decks is a lot of fun, and out of all the new trek probably comes closest to capturing the feel of the TNG era trek. However a lot of the humor comes from Trek tropes and contains a bunch of spoilers and references so maybe not the best show for Katrina.

EricH86

It might be a good idea if you're willing to watch the pilot episode (at least) of DS9 early on during season 6 of TNG. Perhaps watching both series alongside each other in some fashion.

Peter

I wasn’t going to suggest anything else to watch because you’ve stated you don’t really have time and then you have that little conversation at the end. My other suggestion other than the rest of the franchise would be The Orville. It’s only two seasons (so far) and about 20 episodes I believe. As for this episode, you had about the same reaction I have to it. I don’t hate it or love it, it just sort of exists. It’s slightly interesting and has its moments, but nothing really grabs you, or leaves a mark. It doesn’t really develop any character growth either, but I still don’t mind watching it. Of course any episode is better than the previous episode in my opinion. It’s nice to know we have a little bit of a breather for spoilers after watching the cameo vids. Just how far ahead of us are you at this point? In my estimation at least 6 or 7 episodes. Oh and Happy Freakin New Year, let’s leave that disaster in the dust and hopefully there’s a light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Andrew Hogan

The DS9 wormhole is a different wormhole than the Barzan wormhole, although the Barzan wormhole does show up in another Star Trek series.

Matthew Baur

Lower Decks (the series, no the episode) is also run by one of the main writers of Rick and Morty (Mike McMahan) so there is a nice little intersection of a couple shows you two are watching.

Glen

Kat mentioned 'animated series' and Paula was right to mention 'Lower Decks' which is also an episode title from a season 7 TNG episode. However the person that mentioned it to Kat might also be referring to the animated series that was made after the original series that featured the original series cast providing the voices for their characters. Paula and Kat you might consider in future watching some of these as the writing was above your usual Saturday morning cartoon series. Regarding the TNG episode The Price it setup the concept of Wormholes in the Star Trek universe and would lead up to DS9 . I don't know if Paula has watched Voyager but there is also an episode in Voyagers third season that that follows on from this episode.

Brad Ireland

Yeah, I was pretty sure everybody in the comment section was going to correct Paula about that. I did need to check to see if that was the same actress who played Kai Winn because they do look and sound very similar.

Andrew Hogan

Looking forward to all the good episodes coming up; this one was on the weaker side. The actress you looked up does have somewhat of a resemblance to Louise Fletcher. Too many other good shows you haven't seen yet, I hope you don't do Firefly. I know that opinion is gonna get some downvotes :P Doctor Who ended awhile back for a lot of us.

Josh G

I left out the name of the wormhole to avoid potential spoilers but you are correct

Jonathan Emery

The Lower Decks cartoons are really fun and you should definitely watch it together! But you maybe shouldn't watch them until after TNG Season 7, Episode 15 - also called Lower Decks - for spoiler reasons.

Emanuel

Paula and Kat, another good reaction. I have to say, throughout 2020 with everything else happening I have really looked forward to watching TNG with both of you each wek. It's been one of the enjoyable parts of the year, a year that hasn't had that much enjoyment overall. I remember when I first watched this episode that I felt sad for Yuta. When I've watched the episode more recently I was interested to know what sort of person she was before being modified. However due to the nature of the story we can only guess. I liked Data's descriptions of Camp Fires and in 10 Forward I found it surprising when you had Picard and Riker in the room but didn't do anything when Wesley has a conversation with raised voices with the Gather Leader.

Brad Ireland

This is what I wanted to add as well: the Barzan wormhole and Bajoran wormhole are different and have no connection to each other. The Bajoran wormhole was the first stable wormhole discovered by the Federation.

Emanuel

I have a bit of Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) trivia for this episode. This episode features her then-future husband in a minor role. Michael Lamper played one of the Acamarian Gatherers. Starting at the 18-minute mark in this reaction video, look behind and to the immediate right (his left) of the leader of the Acamarian Gatherers. That's the guy. A mutual friend of Sirtis and Lamper introduced them during the filming of the episode and they were married in 1992. They stayed married until Michael Lamper tragically died in his sleep about a year ago. No cause of death was made public.

Jeff Seely

There are, in fact, two animated Star Trek series. Lower Decks is the second. The first, which aired from 1973-74, is entitled simply "Star Trek," (but commonly known as The Animated Series or TAS) and continues The Original Series, with most of the original cast (sans Walter Koenig.)

Ken Quick

Is there any interest in watching Star Trek:Enterprise?

xabdiben

There is an animated star trek of the Original Series. With Kirk and Spock.

xabdiben

Just a point of correction. The Barzan wormhole is completely different than the Wormhole in DS9 if I understood what you said correctly; however you are correct that the last episode "The Price" Set up the concept for that show. Also DS9 begins around a quarter of the way through Season 6 of TNG

Jonathan Emery

Another great episode that isn't tied up in a neat little bow at the end. I remember as a kid watching this episode for the first time and not getting the ending scene in Ten Forward. Makes perfect sense now. That look Picard gives Riker before he walks away that says "I'm straight up begging you to take some shore leave".

Jarrod Wild

Riker asking for food from a chef is a great call back to his personality. Making eggs in his quarters & sampling all the Klingon food before he did the exchange. River’s obsession with food comes up sometimes and is a welcome look into his soul. Yet another reason Troi and Riker are compatible. Troi and her chocolate. They are both foodies!

Christian Rennie

No need for apologies! It’s the Holidays. I cheered when I saw the notification for this one. I’m a fan of this episode! Can’t wait to see the reaction. The writing seems to get better and better.

Christian Rennie

Sorry for the delay! There was a issue on our server end! It is all sorted now!
