That's my favourite bit too; it shows you how much Riker cares about Troi that he's prepared to let any hope of a reconciliation go if it means she's happy.

Troy Convers

Unfortunately I could only watch the intro and the ending. After being in a emotionally abusive/manipulative marriage this episode is now unwatchable for me. But I still love you guys!!

Carrie Schwent

Given how middling this episode's quality was, I think it's interesting to note that it was directed by Robert Scheerer: the man who directed the excellent season 2 episode 'The Measure of a Man'. But it was written by Hannah Louise Schearer, someone whose main claim to fame would eventually be soap operas. She wrote 419 episodes of Port Charles in the early 2000s. This was the last TNG episode she wrote. For me, this episode is okay and kind of forgettable. The best part of it for me was Riker's conversation with Ral in Ten Forward.

Jeff Seely

With regard to the argument about the ethical responsibilities of Troy and Ral's powers, its actually something that gets brought up again in a future episode of season 4. (And in a very poignant way). End of the day, and much as I hate to admit it, I think Ral is right, except for one thing. He is right, Diana uses her powers to give her side and her crew an edge in dealing with other species. It is a form of manipulation, because knowledge is power, even if its just a warning to Picard, that's still knowledge he would not have otherwise had. The difference is who gets the knowledge and why. Picard is someone both she and we as an audience, trust implicitly. We know the character of the individual. And we know that he does not abuse her gifts. Ral abuses his power for himself. Diana uses it and shares it with people who the greater good. But yeah. Its a very fine line. And it's easy to cross without realizing it.

A subtle joy I have from this episode is this is the one time we hear TNG characters verbally refer to the Gamma and Delta Quadrants. ... I guess I won't say why, but those who know know. :)

fcast17

That's exactly the point I wanted to make. Like Jeri Ryan in interviews stated she always clashed with Kate Mulgrew, because she thought otherwise (and I think still does).

Red Claw

Kevin Peter Hall was probably best known for playing the title roles in the films "Predator" and "Harry and the Hendersons".. Another very tall actor who auditioned for the same rike was Tony Todd, but they ended up saving him for an even more substantial role later on...

Neil McRae

Kevin Peter Hall who played Leyor, passed away from an AIDS-related illness at 35 a few years after this episode premiered.

Ugh... As a dude, I can't deny that I find Troi romance episodes, so insipid. I swear, most of Troi's romances always read to me that her type end up being slimy guys. Blegh. This episode has only two redeeming qualities, one of which is HUGELY important for the rest of the franchise at large, and that's the invocation of the "Delta" and "Gamma" quadrents, giving the Star Trek universe some geography. The second redeeming quality is the Riker scene. Basically the ONLY reason I was looking forward to this episode was how Riker's slamming of Ral would redeem him a bit in Katrina's eyes. Which is not great for an episode about one of the female crew's best aspect to belong to her ex. As for the theme of Dangers of Escapism of the season (yes, I'm aware I keep changing it slightly every week, but the broad theme is there) we have Troi, at the start a little fed up with her life and just wanting a change of pace. Then along comes infatuation. escaping into that flurry of feeling and lust to get away from the frustrations of life. Which ultimately lead hurt feelings and conflicts of interests. Also interesting was how, when unsure of herself, Troi retreated into the safe space of her professional persona, which was what she was trying to get away from at the start, but was ultimately what 'saved' her in the end. These two parts of herself were kind of warring with each other, her professional 'counselor' Starfleet officer self and her personal, emotionally vulnerable self. And she tried to escape to the other multiple times throughout the episode. Unfortunately, she did not get a chance to find a balance between her two selves in this episode, on account of her beau of the week been a scuzzball. As for Ral the Scuzzball empath, he two, escaped in a way, to his edge, relying on it too much, rather than put in the hard work, and in the end, it cost him everything. Troi too had to grapple with her 'edge' a bit too, but for her it is less of an escape. As for me, the one thing I'd like to escape from is that wretched "Romance" music track they kept going back to. As if the dialogue in these scenes couldn't be smaltzy enough, but then the music layered on top... ugh, the next episode can't come fast enough... aw crud, I just remembered what the next episode was. Oh, and while this episode fails the bechdel test, it does so SPECTACULARLY! Two women. Talking about a man. While wearing spandex. And stretching. Okay. Lol.

Nolan

Guy who played Ral was in Police Academy 5. I can't not think of that every time I see this episode.

marko

I read somewhere that Marina and Gates were having some tension behind the scenes, so the writers created that stretching scene just for them to get over it. LOL

Does What It Do

The great thing about Seven is she had the sex appeal and still was a powerful feminist character. There wasn't some need to sacrifice attractiveness for strength. And you're spot on about her not trying hard. That's why it worked. She didn't try... she just was.

John

Maybe Ral got under Riker's skin more than he wanted to admit.

Mark Chrisco

I would have absolutely been okay with a flash dance scene with them both. Ethics is an interesting conversation, especially when you mention insider trading, I chalk it up to as long as you don’t get caught, which I’m fairly certain most traders go with.

Andrew Hogan

Devinoni Ral didn't do too well after this. He went to an innocent celebration of his arbitration victory. He ordered a kombucha, which he did not realize contained alcohol. It was described to him as a healthy, organic tea. Next thing he knew, he was 70 miles away, wrapped naked in a blanket, shaking off a meth high, and facing charges for attacking a police horse with a shovel.

Matthew Baur

Near the end, Picard stands down from Red Alert. All well and good except the ship was on Yellow Alert at the time. Just one of those continuity errors we see from time to time.

Mark Chrisco

My least favorite episode of the season by a MILE. Serenity now, insanity later. There’s something about Lloyd Braun,... I mean Devonany Ral,.... I mean Matt McCoy I just can not stand. His voice, his look, everything about him irritates me. Add the Ferengi on top of it, and I avoid this episode like the Corona. Ahhh, yes, as a hetero male, that was one of my favorite scenes, I mean why not admire to gorgeous women. I never noticed the foot thing either, don’t get the fetish, so it never registered. There’s a neat follow up episode to this on Voyager if you ever get to that series. Not much else to this episode other than it’s basically a top episode from here on out. Happy Holidays to everybody.

Andrew Hogan

Matt McCoy is still a familiar face, at least on the channels I watch. I see his commercials pitching insurance all the time. Back then he was also well know for his reccuring character on Seinfeld. The one piece of trivia that I'm surprised Paula didn't get to was about the late Kevin Peter Hall who played the extremely tall Layor He was probably best known for playing Bigfoot in Harry and the Hendersons, both the film and TV series.

Bruce Bromley

Wow, I haven't seen this one in a looooong time. "That" scene was... a definite choice the writers made. I would have rather they talked at a table in Ten Forward, or in one of their quarters. Also, I didn't like how Troi had to do ALL the emotional work for Mr. Ral to realize he's not an ethical person, and "doesn't like what he sees." But I did like that Ferengi line "What?!?! I was tense!!" SO funny. :D

Firefly24601

About the Fanservice this Episiode delivers. I'm not above the fact to admit, that I like it. But to me iut matters how it is handled. And it can also be more equally destributed. I won't mind seeing attractive, sweaty, shirtless man in some episode, although I don't flow that way. Little spoiler (it's for Star Trek Voyager, not TNG) I think my favorite example here is Seven of Nine. Her whole outfit is purely designed to be Fan Service. And Jeri Ryan is good looking aswell. But that is definitely not the reason Seven is one of my all time favorite Trek characters. She's such a strong character, that the Fan Service does not matter. In fact I think Seven is the most feminist character in all Trek. They tried with Janeway to push the feminist agenda and it did not work well. They did not act tryhard with Seven and made an excellent character. Seven was there to sexualy appeal to the male audience and draw in new viewers and accidenticaly became the best character in the show. Fan Service is not a bad thing if it's handled well ... and goes both ways.

Red Claw

"I get them both." One of my favorite moments so far in Season 3 reactions. I love Katrina's love for Troi and Beverly. Two amazing female characters, though I do agree there was no reason for that scene.

Keith Zirwes

This was a great episode to deal with some ethical issues. Put aside our human ethics for a moment. In a world where empaths and telepaths are commonplace (relatively), how does that impact what is considered ethical? Example - Ral's advances with Troi. At first glance he seems to be pushing and consent matters. Except he can sense she's welcoming his advances, and he does ask if she's ok with it when he sees her pull back a bit. Ral using his abilities in negotiation is a bit murkier. He was absolutely right when he pushed back on Troi's complaints, so far as he went. Reading the people in the room and using that in the negotiations in a reality where empaths exist wouldn't be a big deal. If it was, I'm sure there would be trade laws forcing disclosure, much like insider trading laws are for us today. He crosses the line when he starts choreographing fake events to sway opinion, but that would have been shady even if he wasn't an empath. It was just his empathic abilities that let him know that would likely work. So even then, I don't see his empathic ability being ethically wrong, even though his deception with the Ferengi absolutely was wrong. Funny side note. After Ral tried to get under Riker's skin and Riker shut him down, did you notice Riker got up and left - leaving his data pad on the table with Ral. LOL. I hope he locked it when he put it down. About the aerobics scene. Other than an excuse for eye candy, it helped some lazy writing. The whole thing just so Beverly can remark that Troi is looking limber to kick off the conversation. They couldn't come up with any other way for that convo to start? Also, those exercise outfits weren't that out of the ordinary for the late 80's. Fashion took a weird fascination with leotards and exercise clothing for a while. And leg warmers.

John

Two weeks away from the winning streak of episodes for me! January is gonna be a fun month! (I like this one fine, but I, like y'all, always wanted Troy to get more proactive episodes in the show. She gets some, but not enough imo compared to other characters)

Jonny Moonsliver

Happy day after Yule, ladies!
