Closing Time, Gallifrey Gals Get Wibbly Wobbly! S6Ep12

This episode just brings me joy because it has the return of the Cybermats from the Second Doctor era! <3 I've always loved them so much that I named my Roomba 'Cyber Matt' after them years and years ago. :)

I'm glad to know my reactions to new Who follow a similar trajectory to Paula. Loved season 1, loved almost all Tennant, loved much of Smith but started to hate the Moffat manipulative writing. Paul might not say that specifically but her reaction to the roller coaster was exactly how I felt. And I did quit the show from it.

@Dad_Plays_ no, there absolutely are obvious plotholes with River's whole storyline. If there were not, you would not have had to provide a lengthy explanation of how a timeline that is explicitly an arrow moving straight backwards, based on the dialogue in most of the series, works. On the other hand, the actual answer to how the doctor is 200 years older (which was brought up at the end here) when he dies as opposed to at the beginning of the season is that in between letting Amy and Rory go and willingly going to his death, he's been fucking around on his own for two centuries. He's been on his farewell tour. This isn't like a fan theory or anything, it's so heavily implied (without saying it outright because it probably seemed obvious) that it's text. In Closing Time, he is a solid few centuries older, and he's spent those years doing things like this, and the alignment of Exidor, and a significant number of his adventures with River from which they get their History. He's spent centuries doing the kind of hedonism tour he's kind of always wanted his time in the Tardis to be, solving the occasional mystery and saving the occasional planet. 11 did a lot of this (really, every doctor in NuWho should have because you Really can't fit the non-TV material into 'canon' otherwise, and RTD is more vocal about how that should be possible than anyone). The reason he's still so attached to and sentimental about Amy and Rory is that they're [Minor SPOILER excised] and his last actual Companions.

....and the little girl in “Human Nature”. It’s also never shown if any of boys were killed by the scarecrows in “Family of Blood” too, but that’s a possibility.

I love the fact that this episode seemed to be a bit of comedic relief for the viewers with added cybermen then throws a scene on you to hit you right in the feels!!

Benjamin

By and large that’s true, but as well as School Reunion, there is also one episode in a future series I can think of as well (no spoilers)

OK, so I just wanted to do this really quickly because I thought there was some struggle happening with Rivers timeline. Without giving too much away or going into too much detail I'll try to give a short little upshot of where we're at now to make things a little simpler because there really aren't any "potholes" in the River story. So, the River that tore out of the spacesuit was actually the small child who was calling the president. Remember, the River who was grown in that episode said the suit was program to contact the highest authority (in this case, the highest authority would be the president). It's important to remember that while the little girl was in the suit calling the president, the River that we saw in this episode was already in the lake waiting to kill and then killing the Doctor. So the timeline goes like this: 1. River was born and taking away from Amy and Rory, then placed into the space suit and raised by the silence. 2. After contacting the president and asking for help she ripped her self out of the spacesuit and escaped. Now this is great and all except for the fact that she ended up, I think, getting sick on the streets from malnourishment an exposure, and she died. 3. At this point she regenerated into the young girl that we knew as Mel (possibly), eventually found Amy and Rory as children and spent her young life growing up with them until the event of Let's Kill Hitler. 4. During the events of Let's Kill Hitler she, of course, died and regenerated into the woman we know now as River Song and tried to kill the doctor. Then she regretted it and said the doctor using her regeneration power which basically took any future generations from her, and then the doctor, 5. Amy and Rory took her thousands of years into the future and left her at the hospital to mend. 6. After she was well she left the hospital and went to the university or school or whatever it was to get her degree and become an archaeologists. 6. When we see her in this episode she has just gotten her doctorate and is now officially an archeologist. So, however much time that took, that's about how long it's been for. 7. Then she was kidnapped, put in a space suit, and left in the lake to wait until the doctor. So you have to remember that, at this point, as she sits at the bottom of the lake, she has no memory of anything that happened after Let's Kill Hitler with the doctor, Amy or Rory. Aside from traveling to see Hitler and then being taken while unconscious to the future, this River has never known time travel. All the things that we've seen of her from the Byzantium all the way back to the Vashta Nerada at the library hasn't happened yet for her. So basically, the first act with the Doctor since Let's Kill Hitler that River ever experiences is her killing the him. Everything that we've seen comes after (with the exception of the little girl in the spacesuit, growing up with Amy and Rory and the events of Let's Kill Hitler). Once again I love the video and I really hope that something that I've said here helps clear some things up and helps to fill what you might've thought were potholes.

I adore the intricacy of the story arcs of the Moffat era. I know not everyone does. Moffat's version of DW takes some work to wrap your head around. I remember Moffat saying somewhere that S6, in particular, was made for repeat viewing. And here's a fun nugget of information about that Amy intro that everyone loves (sorry if someone has already mentioned this): "Moffat was asked to write the sequence; he called it a "bloody good idea" because it would make it accessible to new audiences, despite noting that diehard fans would not like it. Previous showrunner Russell T Davies was also a fan of the sequence." (from Wikipedia)

I’ve watched rivers timeline in order and it does make a lot of sense, that spacesuit is a second one, and as for...spoilers. Paula’s face when James corden popped up was classic, I love the character of Craig, thank you for an entertaining episode, was it really two years ago you started. I started watching you guys in The January I’ve watched you for almost two years, I had four weeks off that year and I sat in a pub binge watching you guys, so I’m glad I’m not as a newbie as I thought I was

Steven morgan

I know that the schedule of Series 7 was a bit weird when it was airing so are you going to watch the specials that fall within in it since they're kind of canon?

LaRoy Murrell

Katrina is right about the suit, it was young River (let’s call her Melody), because even though it was later in the show than the picnic at Lake Silencio, it was earlier in time. The picnic was 2011, then they went back to 1969. We can assume they were actually 2 different spacesuits, too, because the first one fit Melody (internally) while the second fit River. Perhaps the first (that was ripped through) was a prototype.

Darren Withers

As for the time line plot holes, all I can say is, "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff. " Translation: Don't assume River's timeline and the Doctor's timeline are in any way linear. You have already seen the Doctor's first meeting with River is when she dies, and the Doctor has also met her shortly after her birth, as well as a young child and an adult, and in the season opener you he saw her at two different ages. The Doctor and River's timelines really are a big ball of wibbley-wobbley, timey-wimey stuff.

Gahhh, I can't wait a week for the reaction to the end of the series. Is this how time normally works....slow and in the right order?

Travis Starnes

Paula mentioned that he wasn't 200 years older. A while passed after he dropped off Amy & Rory. Also we don't know how much time travel he did between last week and this one. One clue is the length of his hair. The older Doctor has long hair. But I have to say, the look on Paula's face at 24:30 when the Doctor saw Amy & Rory and she realized he was going to avoid them - right through the heart.

In the USA, Doctor Who and also Torchwood are available on HBO Max, and also on Amazon Prime if you purchase the episodes.

Firefly24601

Not a big fan of the character Craig in either episode. HUGE fan of Stormageddon, however! :)

Firefly24601

I think I recall other American reactors have it available through Amazon Prime, so that is an option also.

Malcolm Wolf

The Doctor did spend 200 years between the premiere of the series and now. How many adventures did he have where he was trying to get the attention of the Ponds, for instance? How long was it after he dropped off the Ponds? He acted like he hadn't seen them in a long time.

Stephen Ray

Listening to you girls chatting to each other about not introducing yourselves before you start chatting and then Kat realising that you had gone and done it again made me smile. It reminded me of how Shayla from justsoshayla ramble on at the end of her Dr Who reactions about not having an outro and rambling on about rambling on until she catches herself then makes a quip and logs out, and just as much fun to see.

Colin 3of5

School Reunion.

G0d_Ginrai

Katrina is right, we don't kill children in Dr. Who. We leave that to Torchwood....

Firefly24601

Okay, was just wondering in case you were watching it via a VPN.

G0d_Ginrai

The "Oh you've redecorated, I don't like it" line is a classic Who reference to a story called "The Three Doctors" when The Second Doctor is annoyed at what The Third Doctor has done to the TARDIS console room 😎

Stuart McConnell

Doctor Who is actually not available on Netflix in the USA :( , so all of the Doctor Who episodes we watch are purchased and streamed digitally.

Time Lord

So how do you two watch Doctor Who together? Because it’s just been announced that Doctor Who will be leaving Netflix (UK) on January 1st 2021 and I’m wondering if that will impact your reactions in any way.
