Comments

So many things I could say about this episode. I'm just a school year above Paula, and was watching these as they came out, but didn't really understand, so Dr Polaski was never a negative for me, but I always enjoyed Crusher more. To me, as a kid a little younger than Wesley, I liked his brilliance and that he got to work with his mom, my favorite job was a church office with my mom (last steady job due to health issues. My junior/senior highschool (moved to a k-12 in 6th grade) would not only read out grades, but we'd correct each other's homework. And for quite the opposite reason, I hated it... I always got good grades, when I did the work... I was dealing with depression and often not able to complete homework, so the constant embarrassment of "Dan, should I even ask if you got it done?" and the person that was supposed to be correcting my homework had nothing to do, or I'd have to pass past me, made it all the worse... I don't know why schools think that embarrassing kids will get them to do better, or that the kids will survive it, without suicide or long lasting trauma... Wesley was my absolute hero.

Dan Williams

I wonder if some of that rage we saw from Wesley was genuine, as Wil Wheaton was going through a lot with his mother at the time. As to the whole matter of scientists and recognition, yeah that's a legit problem and has been for at least a century. There could be entire soap operas written for how they snub each other, one up, manipulate, lie, and even destroy each other to get their name immortalized.

Mr Kitty

I love the reaction when Dr. Crusher comes up again in the intro credits :D

SGTLero

Don't forget that one of the main reasons (if not, THE main reason) they made the change from one piece spandex to the two piece wool was because of Patrick Stewart. His doctor actually forced their hand because the pull against the spandex was wearing on his back and causing actual problems, saying basically that if they didn't do something they were looking at a law suit in the future.

Trylikeafool I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. But I am extremely grateful that we could be there for you, even if it was just more a moment of a distraction. Thank you for being here with us - Kat 💕

Time Lord

honestly in my opinion seasons 3-5 are the best

GreyIrohNee

I was looking forward to watching this yesterday when it was posted, then found out a friend passed away unexpectedly. I couldn’t bring myself to do anything, and today I’ve been in a funk. But I decided to go ahead and watch because I’ve been looking forward to it for two months. You made me smile and took my mind off things for a little bit : ) Also loved Kat’s reaction to Beverly returning.

A pretty solid episode which is considered one of the weaker ones in S3. Good sign for the next few months. Is it episode 15 yet?

Josh G

I have to refresh it a few times in Firefox for the player to come up.

Josh G

I think that was my comment Katrina quoted at the beginning.

Geordie Joe

I just looked up season 3 episodes.... so many great ones coming this season

GreyIrohNee

I’ve been so excited about this episode for that reaction!

Red Hunter

Honestly, that was the best part of the whole video. :)

The Crazed Spruce

The reaction to Crusher in the credits sequence was worth it all on its own. Priceless.

Jonny Moonsliver

Although not my favorite Episode this season, but I'm looking forward to the raction to "Hollow Pursuits". There's a certain character I hope resonates with Katrina. I think he's one of the most relatable characters in all of Trek and I love him.

Red Claw

I missed watching Trek with you gals. And welcome to season three.

Jared Abrahamson

And Katrinas reaction to Crusher's return made this long wait worth it

GreyIrohNee

Is anyone going to talk about how Wesley is basically a god now? He created life. o.O Also, Katrina's reaction to the credits was worth the price of admission.

Craig O'Flaherty

Is the video down for anyone else? I get the landing image but not the player. UPDATE: Odd. I get the player in Chrome but not in Firefox.

Timothy Hennon

Yeah, the thing is I became a patron as I wanted to see Katrinas full reaction to Pulaski. And as a Pulaski dislikes ( although mine was coloured by the actresses la law death scene that freaked me out so much. But to see katrinas happy dance was brilliant. So you girls think Stubbs is familiar well he’s bob Kelso in scrubs

Steven morgan

Also in season 1 + 2 they went through about 17 writers.

Discgear

12:00 I paused and just grinned like an idiot.

Graham Mills

also i forget which season it is but at one point Engineering changes, they used to have a turbolift and then it gets removed

GreyIrohNee

Yessss!!!!!!!

GreyIrohNee

Katrina's reaction to seeing McFadden's name back in the opening credits was well worth dealing with the break. Also Paula's reaction to Kat's was just as great.🙂 The one thing that made me smile today.

Bruce Bromley

Did you notice Lt. Geordie La Forge is now Lt. Comdr. Geordie La Forge?

John

I forgot you two were starting season 3 today. I'm in!

paulh7791

Hurrah! You're back! Oh man, Season 3 - you are in for some great times, Kat! Great opening episode to a season that revamped quite a few things. Up goes the effects budget, new costumes and of course my favourite human Doctor comes back. (Sorry McCoy, Pulaski, Dr. Stephen Franklin) I was so thrilled to see Crusher back. From what I heard she was forced out owing to her repeatedly taking the producers to task over the substandard scripts and the sexism apparent in the first season. The producer-writer responsible for the offending material said, "Either she goes, or I go." So somewhat unforgivably they fired her. Fortunately, in the second season they fired him and brought Gates back, and Partrick Stewart who had been behind-the-scenes campaigning for her return was the first to call her with the congratulations. And it was great to have her back. One of the frustating things about early STNG was the sexism apparent in the lack of good scripts and stories for Troi, Crusher and Yar and it was a profound relief when STNG and DS9 started getting better in that regard, though still behind the times. Happily one of my favourite STNG episodes later in the run is a pure Dr. Crusher episode. One of my ex-colleagues when I was working in Cardiff library here in Wales actually worked with Gates McFadden on Labyrinth. She was choreographer and he was of the Jim Henson team. They worked extensively together on the firey dance. He reassured me that both her and Bowie are classy, every-day people enjoying cuppas in the canteen between filming - so phew. (He was also one third of Jabba the Hut.) Good work from Will Wheaton as well in this. I really like his scenes with Dr Stubbs, and this episode really reinforces what Paula says about the new writing rules on the show emphasising that a guest character plot should say something about a regular character. As many have pointed out already in this comments section, the monomaniac Stubbs is a warning to young Crusher as to what he could turn into, should he ever forget to cut loose and enjoy life. For all his craziness though, Stubbs is still a character I oddly warm to. In a strange way he isn't arrogant. He concedes that other people like Will could achieve what he's achieved, he even admits to his own potential failure. What drives him over the edge into full on breakdown is an unforseen calamity that seems also like a sick joke. Imagine you've been promised the finest ship in the fleet, hugely qualified officers to help you through an experiment that could never be repeated... and on the eve of the fulfilment of your life's work the ship you're on goes completely crazy with the crew seemingly shrugging their shoulders with a, "Gosh, unlucky, it's never done THAT before." Now true, my empathy for him falters a little when he's willing to write off the rest of the crew, but I do find I always automatically warm to the screw-ups in Star Trek. To err is human. It also helps that the wonderful Ken Jenkins sells it with his great balance of pathos and ham. He had another good little role in Babylon 5 as an arrogant jerk 'I cannot fail!' captain who wouldn't admit to dangerous mistakes, and ends up being forcibly relieved of his command by his first officer, a lady who looks remarkably like Jacinda Ardern. (By the way, anyone out there who like me has one foot in the Star Trek 'verse and another in the Babylon 5 'verse, there's a very good reaction series just nine episodes in on Babylon 5 by 'Chosen One Reactions'. She's very good and well worth subscribing to. She's one season into Doctor Who too, so if you still have cravings after the great blissfully unrivalled fix that the Gallifrey Gals offer up, go check her out!)

Peter Evans

Paula's little smile when Kat mentions cast changes :)

TheHimble

Yay you guys are back. If Kat loved the first 2 seasons she will fall head over heels for this one. Also if you guys can keep this up will you eventually move on to ds9?

Mike

Yesss, the reaction on Crushers return was all we hoped for. Pumped for this season!

Pickupthepieces76

Paula, don't forget to mention the other new script policy this season. And the fun fact that Ron D. Moore's first episode was his FIRST episode. Of anything. ever. As for this episode, I think the thing about Stubbs is that he is a kinda dark mirror for Wesley. He's what Dr. Crusher was fearing Wesley would turn into. The burden of expectation and potential becoming all consuming. When Stubbs told Troi that there was nothing underneath his self portrait, that's because there wasn't. All he is is his work. He doesn't socialize, he escapes into his Baseball fantasy. (Piller who wrote the episode is a die-hard baseball fan, and the writers were a bit bemused that he killed it off in Trek) But for Stubbs, he built his life on being an infallible kid genius to the point that anything that threatened that identity was to be regarded with hostility. And the crew is emotionally mature and understanding enough to get that he's not being an ass to be an ass, that's just who he is... And thenwehn he gets to do his experiment, he is enraptured. Contrast to Wesley who DOES make a big mistake this episode and learns that failing, and admitting to failing is okay, because there are people around him to support him. And then at the end of the episode, we see that his path will not be that of Stubbs, because he does indeed have a life beyond trying to attain and maintain his potential.

Nolan

That was a long two months. Katrina was really into checking out the Doctor issue, I was surprised she was all over it on the title cards. As for mentioning Pulaski, I believe she’s brought up in a future episode. This may just be an excuse but I’ve had this question for a lot of different shows when it comes to past characters and continuity and one of the reasons, fair or not, is anytime you mention something someone (a writer) came up with, they are then owed money just at the mere mention of a character or technology etc. This is why it is avoided quite a bit on a lot of shows. At what point will you be watching the TOS episode winner?

Andrew Hogan

I'm sure I mentioned it before, but Katrina (and Paula too!) should watch the documentary "Chaos on the Bridge". There are TNG spoilers though especially for season 3 so Katrina can't watch it yet.

Jarrod Wild

Chaos on the Bridge is an excellent documentary about the tumultuous first couple seasons of TNG and how they settled into a groove with season 3. It's filled with lots of first hand accounts from cast, crew, writers, etc... and hosted/narrated by William Shatner. They go into the Crusher/Pulaski switch and switch back.

Jarrod Wild

Welcome to season 3 Katrina. Can finally share my phone wallpaper - http://www.imagebam.com/image/d7120b1358531062

Angelus-1701

Katrina's reaction to Dr. Crusher coming back was everything I'd hoped for!!! My own opinion is that when Gates McFadden was fired, Diana Muldaur didn't know if she would WANT to be on TNG for more than a season, and wisely decided to do a "Special Guest Star" for one season. If McFadden hadn't come back, I have a feeling that Muldaur would have been either "upgraded" to a regular cast member, or left the show if things hadn't worked out. As it was, the writer/producer that had the problem with McFadden did not come back to the show after the second season, and she agreed to come back.

Firefly24601

Welcome to season 3 :D In terms of storytelling, this is probably the strongest in all of TNG. There are several episodes this season which I have watched over and over again - and have cried every damn time!

Ian Smith

I'll say it helps to already be a Whovian trying to watch TNG. The first couple seasons are pretty darn good, just the style is a bit different sometimes. There was a budget bump. Getting Gates back plus the new costumes (not cheap at all) plus a brand spankin' new 4-foot model of the Enterprise. And it's Dr. Bob Kelso from Scrubs!

Jarrod Wild

His kindness towards Wesley really shows this. He comes across insincere and cold, but he sees in Wesley someone he can relate to... someone that could understand the burden of being gifted and having to live up to those expectations. He felt Wesley was actually someone he could connect with, unlike most people he encountered.

John

I like the interaction with Wesley and Dr. Stubbs. Stubbs is clearly brilliant and they make that comparison about both he and Wes being prodigies with the burden to live up to their potential. Stubbs is easy to dislike due to his single-minded attitude and insincerity but from his perspective he's still trying to live up to his potential. His life could have started much like Wesley's, always trying to do what's expected of him and as his career progressed that became all he knew how to do and eventually it consumed his life. That's what he meant by saying beneath the facade there's nothing at all. His work was all he had. They don't come out and state it, but Stubbs is who Wesley could end up being if he's only focused on his work and studies and doesn't cultivate a balanced life outside of work. When your work is all you have, it comes to define your self worth. That's what Beverly was worried about - Wesley developing a well rounded life outside of just work so he doesn't become a person like Dr. Stubbs 30 years from now. Trivia side note - if TNG was happening real time from when this episode first aired, Wesley would now be close to Dr. Stubbs' age. Who did the wunderkind finally evolve into, I wonder?

John

I always thought of Stubbs not so much as a bad guy or anything and more as a man blinded by his ambition and getting lost down the rabbit hole of expectation, his or other peoples. Also very excited to be back to Trek.

Rylee

From what I remember, Gates was heartbroken to be written off. They wanted the doctor to have a more irascible personality. When Pulaski proved unpopular with both the writers and fans alike, it was decided instead of recasting again, to invite Gates back, which she happily accepted.

Mark Chrisco

I loved katrina reaction to dr crushers name in the titles is priceless

Oliver Horsley

Talking about the Picard maneuver with the new uniforms, that was largely fixed by adding velcro around the waist to hold the top in place. Not sure when they did that, but I've seen some cosplays both with and without the velcro and it makes a HUGE difference.

John

In honor of Election Day in the U.S., I "vote" this as the most awesome post of the day. As someone in the news biz who's indeed excited but also flustered by today, this is something great to clear the head for an hour. :)
