Joined your patreon for these reactions, and I'm loving them so far. This episode is wonderful. Brent Spiner's performance in this one, when he's glitching, is a real stand out. You two are never gonna believe this. Not only did I see your computer glitching, but right after the Enterprise's computer started messing up, when Picard ordered the Earl Grey, Hot and it showed up as that potted plant, my screen did the same thing as yours. The screen shrank and then got bigger again on its own. It happened twice. Freaky.

I never realized the diamonds in the control room were similar to Land of the Lost's weird doorways. So many subtle references in this show. I love your reactions, its like watching the show for the first time again with new insights. So cool.

welcome and thank you Daniel!! -Paula

wow you made so many good and interesting points here! There's a certain supercut of Worf that I can't wait to show Kat, I just want to get at least through season 2 before I do... Thank you for the comment, genuinely. I enjoyed reading it! -Paula

I just realized I made this joke in a comment right above yours and then read this! ahaha great minds! -Paula

Time Lord

haha I hadn't *really* thought about it like that, but all they needed to do with call Starfleet Tech Support and have them say "Have you turned the ship off and on again?" -Paula

These are really great clarifications Jeff, thank you so much. -Paula

Love the ep. love the video. Love both of you.... just nothing but so much love all around everywhere!

Glad you ladies found a new home for your videos. This one is like a little mini-movie. You could easily pad this out another 45 minutes and make a really good feature film. I've watched Contagion more times than I care to admit.

One more thing that people in the next 300 years forget about, modern computer hardware has a feature called NX (No Execute) or XD (Execute Disable) meaning it prevents data areas of computer memory from executing code on the CPU.

Robert Williams

Man, I will never understand why people write off Season 2 so quickly. So much of what makes the show great really starts forming here. We see what makes Guinan special. We had our first poker game. Miles is given a name. And here is really the first hint that Picard is super into archaeology. As a fan since it aired it is always thrilling to see these seeds being planted and watching them grow. Plus it is just a solid episode. The stakes are crazy. We get an awesome encounter with a Romulan D’deridex ship. Plus fun Data and Picard stuff on a crazy planet. I have always loved Rikers line about finding some rocks to throw at the romulans. Classic Riker. Just good times.

As a 30 year TNG fan, I'd like to say, "I love your reactions!" You Gals are making my stay at home circumstances a little more bearable. Thank you!!

Richard Saldana

If it's the episode that I believe you are talking about, Paula had mentioned one in passing they may skip it completely.

Bruce Bromley

I'd like to congratulate you gals for getting to the halfway point in season 2. There are some great episodes in the back half. I'm looking forward to the next appearance of Q and a certain ambassador. Also the episode that I think is the worst in all of Star Trek is coming up. I'm curious to see your thoughts.

Jared Abrahamson

Seems like your laptop was also infected by the Iconian program during the episode. 😂

Geordie Joe

Ooh, good call. If they were to go for a three episode watch, I'd be tempted to add either Devil in the Dark - which has a great message - or A Taste of Armageddon, which shows how well Trek can do those parable episodes. The best take-away Kat would get from the original series is that Kirk really isn't anything like how pop-culture views Kirk. He's a pretty serious chap who balances carefully logic and emotional response and who only takes risks when he absolutely has to, and who will even pass up a date with a nice woman if he's got a lot of paperwork to do. :)

Peter Evans

I do really like how she mucks in with the rest of the team, she's a bit of a whirlwind.

I decided to become a patron today :-) I'm very happy with my decision. Re-watching these episodes with you feels real and genuine to me... it's the magic of the internet I guess... but it really feels like I get to know you through your reactions to the material! I'm expecially charmed and honoured by your sensibility. Love you gals!! :-)

Kat: “18 people died and I thought that was bad, but a 1000 people... I was tearing up.” Oh god she’s not going to handle Wolf 359 very well.

SplinterTME

The short hair looks bomb Kat. This has always been one of my favorite episodes. Its not like super character-driven or anything, but its got so much Atlantis vibes. And introduces Picard's love of archeology.

Jonny Moonsliver

One thing I noticed about Dr. Pulaski was after she finished with her rant, she immediately set about getting the job done and showing the others how to improvise. Her comment about the splint brought out her empathetic side. I think she functions best in a crisis. She's abrasive a lot of the time, but when the chips were down, after a brief rant to blow off some steam, she gets on with the business at hand.

[Warning - enthusiastic rambling...] Probably one of Star Trek's most shocking openings this. The Yamato was no little cruiser, she was a Galaxy Class vessel, one of Star Fleet's finest ships. You get an idea of how important they are by their sheer rariety in the show. My jaw dropped when I was a kid watching that. All those people... gone! Now rewatching it, the scene always reminds me of a passage in Patrick O'Brien's incredible Aubrey & Maturin novels, a book series that rivals Hornblower. I feel no guilt in quoting it here, as Star Trek and Captain Picard was based partly on C.S. Forrester's Hornblower, and the Aubrey & Maturin books are of the same gripping stuff. In an instant a major character in the book series dies along with his crew when the ship's magazine detonates. Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin look from afar. 'He was exceedingly tense, exceedingly alive; yet some small fragment of Jack's mind remembered Stephen telling him that 'a-Dieu-va', the French for 'about ship', also meant, in ordinary language, 'we must chance it and trust to God'. 'That is just about it with us,' he reflected, looking at the distant two-deckers, still battering one another with terrible fury; and as he looked the entire bank of smoke parted, blasted outwards from the centre, a vast towering jet of flame interspersed with black objects rising, rising, the whole crowned with white smoke. The Pollux had blown up; and even before the immeasurable flash had died away the roar of her exploding magazine reached them, shaking the sea and the sails as it came... Stephen moved his glass about the backened wreckage covering half a mile of sea. "Five hundred men in a second's blast, dear mother of God." *Cough* Anyway. Sorry. Big digression. But God I love those books. Stephen Maturin a civilian, is shocked. Aubrey, a Captain, knows he cannot pause and he keeps giving orders in an even tone. Grief doesn't enter into it. There's no time for it. And so with Picard, explaining to Wesley why the adults aboard react so to the equally shocking destruction of the Yamoto. Yes. Back to Trek... I like this episode! It has its flaws - for all the shock the Yamato is kind of forgotten at the end with a wry smile - but overall this is a pretty gripping episode. The Next Generation really is making fewer and fewer mistakes and is beginning to attain a promising base level of quality. We're on a solid road to awesome people, it won't be long now! There's lots of good stuff in his one, so I'll just do a few observations... 1: Romulans! I love the Romulans. They make such great sneering baddies. With their austere hair-cuts and massive shoulderpads I always think of a race of particularly mean 80's-90's fashion designers. A lot of Next Generation's best episodes to come feature them. Naturally they don't beat the klingons as my number one alien race, but they're a worthy adversary. You get the feeling from the sheer visual design of their warship that they possibly even have the edge over the Enterprise in a stand-up fight. 2: I love the little scene with Pulaski in the freaking-out med-bay. You know what? I think she's growing on me more quickly than she did originally. I also get the impression that Starfleet's medical officers have been getting lazy with their beepy-boopy magical wand-waving heal-o-tron devices. Jesus, Star Fleet! You don't teach first aid? 3: Levar Burton sells the hell out of malfunctioning turbolift. Genuine lol at the, "My visor! I can't see without my visor!" moment you conjured. 4: Poor Worf. The Enterprise whipping boy. There to have his suggestions shot down and to be beat up by every single alien so that the script can time-effectively set them up as a threat. The fact that Worf is just so clearly brilliant and interesting and funny and lovable and awesome is a testament to his character and Michael Dorn's just incredible performance. 5: I always wondered why Trek didn't offer the elegant explanation of why Captains could away-mission whenever they wanted, to whit - that Star Fleet required a Captain to risk his, her or itself to make informed decisions on the spot in first contact situations and that a Captain protected from harm would lead to a man, woman or other becoming overly cautious and unable to seize the initiative. Officers are plentiful, you can always promote a first officer if you lose a Captain, but a tradition based on self-sacrifice, risk and daring is irreplaceable. This is the same reason why Captains on ships of the Royal Navy in the late 18th and 19th centuries (Hornblower again, sorry) always took the same chances as their crew and sometimes more. 6: How long can Picard operate without tea, Earl Gray, hot? We need answers. Great reactions once again, love you Galaxy Gals.... and Katrina, I dig the new haircut! Also Katrina's now cemented huge enthusiasm of the show reminds me of that moment the first time I saw the two of you in the reaction video for 'Rose' when Katrina excitedly says, "Yay! SHE LIKED IT!" So fun being on this journey with you. As ever hugely looking forward to next Tuesday's installment. x

The Neutral Zone is between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire. It's like the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. If you want to give Kat a feel for the original series and some of it's characters, I recommend the episodes "Balance of Terror" and "Journey to Babel."

John

The crew count of the Enterprise D was 1014.

Scott LeMay

It's a fun episode, with loads of entertaining moments - but my favourite part is Geordi's desperate attempt to get to the Bridge: exciting and funny,at the same time.

Ian Smith

"Federation IT Help Line, have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Firefly24601

It was good they referenced the loss of all hands aboard the Yamato through Wesley. Showing how they deal with it. Often a loss of a nameless crewmember (red shirt) is maybe reacted to in the moment, but they hardly ever circle back to it when there finally is time to mourn. Which I get from a tv episode making point of view, can't have a funeral scene almost every week, but still something to address once in a while. So now with 1000+ souls they did address it. Another thing. A system reboot saved the day. This would seem an obvious solution to people watching now, but back when this was aired this was hardly common knowledge. Still in the context of the show it is strange this option wasn't one of the first things they tried as they are much further along technology wise than us.

Think the last time I saw this episode, I was still a kid and didn't really grasp what was going on. Nice to see I understood it this time : )

trylikeafool

A fun episode, I thought. As always, love Kat's reactions. I did think for being his best friend in the ship Geordi did give up and was pretty quick to think Data was dead and all he was just going through a reboot. Seeing Picard's door troubles also reminded me of the great bloopers and outtakes the show had. BTW, live that you picked Rick and Morty as one of your new shows. Since Paula hasn't seen it I think the best way to discripe it to her would be Back to the Future on LSD. 🙂

Bruce Bromley

Definitely one of the more surprising episodes of season 2. The stakes are super high even before the opening credits start. You understandably missed it right when the episode started back up, but Captain Picard said that over 1,000 people were killed when the Yamato was destroyed. So it was on the lower end of the spectrum for a Galaxy class ship, but still a devastating loss. I love Katrina's realization when the door hesitated for Picard. I could be wrong; but from what I can gather about the Neutral Zone, it's a mutually recognized buffer between Federation space and Romulan space. It's "neutral" because neither side has a territorial claim on it. That said, any incursions by either side into the Neutral Zone are seen as a threat. Basically, you're getting too close to my territory if you're in the Neutral Zone. So as a rule, both sides are supposed to stay out of it. I won't say anything about it, but I know exactly which DS9 episode Paula is talking about.
