Good example of why Star Trek is so good. The setting of Star Trek is a great substrate for telling many stories, including those that would belong in The Twilight Zone, but instead, have a logical explanation.

Speaking of episodes that could've been better had they been later in the franchise history, this episode really reminds me of TOS' Dagger of the mind, which could have been equally very psychologically disturbing too, had it not been, you know, TOS, with Gary Stu Shatner hamming it up, a love interest subplot, etc.
