As I’ve gotten older, seeing friends and family members not achieve their potential hurts. Sure, the LTJG role is not “bad”, per se. Just that he and many others, were meant to contribute to society, the universe, in a different way.

It's not that being a Lt. JG on the Enterprise that sucks. It's that Picard was one of the greatest captain/explorer/diplomats only to give it all up for a desk job. Nah, let me die Q.

I agree with Josh talking about how Picard's frustration at being Lt.JG instead of captain is a Matter of Perspective (if you will ;) ). There are probably thousands of people in the Federation who would do anything to get on the Enterprise, and there are fans of Trek who wouldn't mind being an ensign if it meant exploring the universe. But Picard isn't someone on the outside looking in. He's a man who lived his entire adult life pushing himself forward to explore and learn, to be someone who makes more of an impact than just being known as 'punctual'. The worst part is Picard remembering his original life, knowing he had all that potential, but being made to live out his days as just another face on the ship. It's Star Trek's "It's A Wonderful Life". It's remembering how things were that makes the new timeline hell for Picard, not just that he got demoted to a blue uniform.

I'm with you on liking this one more than the Inner Light. Seeing the past Picard's actions and how his choices shaped him was really nice to see.

I can’t bring myself to think that if it was all “in his head” that he’d imagine Q as god
