Nope... this is the first time the term "Awakened" has been used for Devil Fruits. It's interesting... The Demon Guards are all extremely strong and sturdy, but now that we know they are people who ate Zoan Devil Fruits... it begs the question... why are they always in their Hybrid Form? and why they seem to be less intelligent than regular people?. Blackbeard is an great character and even greater antagonist... easily in my top 3 of favorite characters in all of One Piece alongside Sanji and Garp. And once again... Oda subverts our expectations..... You go into this episode thinking Blackbeard had an unfair advantage because his fruit nullifies other fruit powers... and then you have to reconsider everything again cuz it turns out he can't do shit if his opponent just attacks faster than he can react xddd.
