2025-10-23 08:12:57 +0000 UTCUtena struck me as the first TV series to use what I'd call the "rock opera" genre of anime: unlike an idol or music show, music isn't the PLOT, but instead particular musical themes are omnipresent throughout in setting the stage of repeated set-pieces and character themes, to a greater degree than most anime, drawing from the tradition of Takarazuka musical productions but adapting it to anime medium. The same "operetic" style appears in the movie Dirty Pair: Project Eden (parts of which visually prefigure Utena) and in the works of production company Bee Train -- specifically Noir, Madlax and to a lesser extent Hack/Sign ..).

2025-10-22 19:08:37 +0000 UTCOne Utena creator you didn't mention but whose work you have seen before was Yōji Enokido, one of the key members of Be-Papas, who wrote over half of the scripts and contributed to series composition. Recently, along with Anno, he co-scripted and did series composition on Gundam GQuuuuX. Prior to Utena he'd been the script writer on the yuri-themed episodes of late period Sailor Moon (Uranus/Neptune) and also wrote the scripts for several episodes of Evangelion. In general, the Utena team is a mix of folks who had met each other on Sailor Moon and Evangelion, and it shows... PS: Love the soundtrack on Utena.
