I've noticed its unpredictable who clues into the twist before this point. The show only really started hammering it in the last few eps, before the battlefield trip it was more "all these people are too damn likable". The new OP is arguably the most on-the-nose nod to this, but it only played for like 1 prior episode.

Sake cups were individual possesions people carried around with them, especially samurai and rulers and were considered a sort of intimate and very personal object some so much so people would use the same cup for decades if not their whole lives. Warriors who knew for sure were going to die, usually dispatched in suicide missions, performed that ritual, after prifying drinking sake they broke their cups symbolizing their resolve in a "I'm never drinking from this cup again for the die is cast". This practice was adopted by Kamikaze pilots during WW2...
