Candyman (1992)

The ActionBoyz discuss Candyman.

Candyman (1992)

One of my favorite things from the movie Candyman was Tony Todd talking about letting them use REAL bees on his body. He had in his contract that he would get $1000 for every bee sting. He ended up with $27,000. https://collider.com/candyman-tony-todd-27-bee-stings/

I spent more time watching that video as a small child than actually playing the game.

Jack McReynolds

Fortunately i've never had to do school bathrooms, just bars/restaurants. I can only imagine the horror that children would unleash.

Fan_of_giants_420_69

As a real deal union custodial engineer let me break it down. Elementary schools more gross stuff, poop on the walls, pee in the sinks, hot dogs in the urinals. Middle and High School more vandalism and graffiti. But boys rooms are waaay grosser compared to women’s restrooms. Women’s restrooms might be more cluttered, toilet paper on seats paper towels on the sink area. But boys bathrooms are always hands down worse. Still haven’t worked somewhere with the row of separate gender neutral stalls. But my fellow brothers in brooms dislike them cause the teenagers are always joking up inside them.

My mom taught in Cabrini Green in the late 80s and 90s. Was the worst hood in the US at the time. That is all.

Wow Arnold on WTF is a must listen

ageeogee

I can't believe that Rogers thought that Nightmare On Elm Street ripped of Candyman. The idea of Freddy being powered by fear was established in the first movie that came out 8 years prior to Candyman. Also Joe Pera is an American hero.

HeavyMetalCircus

Been noticing Stang has brought up Bowie fairly frequently past few eps. Modern Love and Hallo Spaceboy are great for cardio

Joe B

Wow. 6100 subscribers today. I thought it was like 5700 the other day. Congrats

All the real janitors out there know that women's bathrooms are far dirtier than men's

I saw the time on this and "aw man"ed out loud. I have a sickness. xD

When they were talking about wearing a coyote, I need someone to tell me they thought about the wizard from the Dragonstrike instruction video... https://youtu.be/FF1_IHliRhI?si=hRaUMQYV1j1E24Rv

I love an Italian Gyro Soppresata, provolone, tzatziki, cukes. Opa!

I remember Damnation Game as having something to do with cannibalism or something. I read Barker in High School, which was a very long time ago, and I've been afraid to go back into a lot of his books because I'm afraid my memories and reality are not at all in synch with each other.

Dan

The coneheads movie is pretty good imho and the soundtrack too!

Brendan Crowley

Shrimp dick into my heaaaaart

The snl sketch reminded me that there was a Malkovich cold-open-where he tries hitting line drives into the audience. Think it was with Jeter?

It's funny, I just saw Mishima a few weeks ago for the first time - fantastic movie about the most charismatic and talented ActionBoyz listener of all time - but I wasn't in love w/ that score either. I guess it's hard for me to put myself in 1985 when that kind of score would've been totally revolutionary.

Triumph44

Will write about it on the discord 😛

Gabrus, Rodgers, and Stanger

Shadow Wolves Mishima/Sun and Steel coverage would be ... problematic.

Adam Lewis

Eventual D.C cab episode gonna be wild, gushing on the barbarian brothers and dunking on bill Maher

Rich

Thoroughly enjoying Lowbrow McCartney. I can definitely see him writing “Freedom”

Joe B

The Damnation Game gets off to a good start, and I liked the book overall. I retain so little of what I read lately that I can't recall how much I liked something if I read it a few years ago. I generally think highly of Clive Barker as a writer, though.

David Bauer

I have the same curiosity. I listened to Philip Glass more in high school, and I love the Mishima score.

David Bauer

The medicine cabinet stuff is based on this incredibly harrowing (and very long) Chicago Reader article from 87. https://chicagoreader.com/news-politics/they-came-in-through-the-bathroom-mirror/

Curious what type/era Philip Glass Rodgers is into - I always liked this soundtrack though I hadn't seen the movie, but I'm less enthusiastic about when he became a Soundtracks Guy in late 90s/early 00s.

Triumph44

Great ep, Boyz. Want to recommend Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, finalist for the National Book Award and destined to be made into an amazing Action Boyz film.

JamieQT

Already love the mileage we are getting out of Cyboman

Nathan Maidlow

Honestly, Babe Ruth is a more realistic Candyman.

Don Knott Steiner

Watching the trailer for the new Exorcist, you would think Oldfield’s song was a constant presence in the original, when it’s used (extremely effectively) for about 20 seconds

I’ve got a Muggsy Bogues throwback jersey purely for nostalgia from NBA Jam TE and the cool as fuck colours/logo.

Rodgers talking about his Star Trek days like they’re in the past, plus the discussion about jokes being intensified in the edit makes me wonder if those things are connected. I currently have a team of psychopaths analyzing the data. Tony Todd was a Star Trek staple. He starred in one of the greatest DS9 episodes - The Visitor, which is a solid 42 minute watch even if you’re not into the mythos of the IP.

Slurp

I had no idea Candyman was set in Liverpool! I’m now imagining that he got the name from always appearing wearing an early 90s Liverpool top from when Candy was their sponsor. Say his name five times in the mirror and he steals your car. 😆

Dave McM

Scarlet Gospels was good “fun”.

Dave McM

It’s on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8r91MWh/

David

Patreon got rid of the Community Page. Now, all those posts are gone. Including the link to that Two Lennies SNL sketch. Thanks a lot Patreon!

Paul

Rodgers & Gabrus exposing themselves as city slickers with their poo rankings. Dog shit stinks but human shit is so bad it feels like a crime has been committed.

David

I wonder whether any other female shadow wolves sense the sexual violence in the horror of candyman. For me the hook is waaaay worse than the bees. Him lifting up her dress with the hook is horrifying. It ties in with the racist narrative around the backstory in the sequel. And on another note, he is one of the villains that seem To make people incredibly horny.

mumbles march

It’s just for the shadow wolves eps

We watched Candyman at a sleepover in elementary school and then all went to say his name in the mirror but got too scared and said non-scary dead celeb names like Babe Ruth and Elvis instead.

Jesse Crap

I found that fucken two lennies snl sketch. Worth it.

Scott Ferris

The urban legend class reminds me I took a class on Zombies in college. It was full of engaged students and we had to watch some zombie films. That’s where I learned modern zombie mythology came from Haitian slave owners who leveraged voodoo to scare their slaves into not killing themselves to get out of their living hell. “If you don’t work until you die naturally, you will be cursed to work the farm eternally as a zombie.”

John

Do you have a favorite Clive Barker book or story? I liked Imajica when i first read it, but that was decades ago.

Dan

My cats name is Bernadette and we call her Bernie for short, she’s really cute and I agree it’s a great name thanks guys

Shane bohm

I totally forgot this was a podcast discussing Candyman, and got sucked into a potential month long legal battle for the custody of the Gwildor voice. This future legal ruling will set a precedent that just might send this county’s laws back centuries.

Don Knott Steiner

When does the video tier start?

ThaCapn

If there was some way to tip on this app I would of sent some extra cash for “do you think Candyman likes his bees at this point?” with less than 4 minutes left in the pod

Brix

Loved interstellar's score- possibly the best aspect of the movie. Haven't seen 28 days later in 21 years, I don't remember the music at all.

Gabrus, Rodgers, and Stanger

Not to Delphi

John McClane

Disclaimer: Not a criticism/question. Rodgers mentioned how this score was too on the nose. I agree, and think two of the best modern scores are 28 Days Later and Interstellar. I feel like they were fucking awesome for being new for their respective genre. So Ben, what’s ur take on these scores?

ChuteShark

Thank you

John McClane

This movie came out at peak Judgement Night era of suburban people being afraid of the city. Cabrini Green was THE symbol of urban decay of Chicago at the time, there were news stories about it almost daily. It was referenced in causal conversation all the time, it was the kind of place your liar 8 year old friend from Schaumburg would claim he and his cousins almost got killed at. All of that context I can remember from when I was a kid really adds to the tone of the movie for me. Maybe some of the rowhouses are still there but the big towers got torn down in like 2009 and now there's a big shopping mall and a target, which is gentrification that would be too on the nose for a movie, which is maybe why they don't mention it in the new Candyman.

Eric U

Nothing is scarier than listening to this podcast at work and accidentally switching from earbuds to speaker.

Dr. Pepper (for mama)

He is for sure. I remember on his show Joe Firestone had a line " Do you want to go out and look at the beans before Rick Steve's Europe comes on? " I laughed so hard and my Fiancee who's from the East Coast asked me what was so funny. I told her I've never seen someone capture the Midwest so well in one sentence. It's something I could here my grandma ask my grandpa. Lol He really picks up on the little shit in interesting ways.

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

I got all my sports knowledge from NBA JAM

bloodflart

just watched his special on youtube last night I was laughing so hard, unique dude

bloodflart

You got a lot of nerve showing your face here, Helen. Look who's talking.

Michael Pemulis

Sorry for spoilers but i can’t believe Rodgers allowed Bot&Gorgon back for a surprise dual appearance…what a heartfelt love letter to the action faction

Joe B

“Human shit is freaky!” -Stanger

The true horror is that many believe honey bees are good. But the ones that we use for production are actually nonnative and invasive. We need more native pollinators (e.g., bumble bees) and less use of pesticides. -your local ABZ ecologist

___b__D

It's funny that they didn't want organs in the Exorcist score, but decided on bells. No relation to church. Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is the theme. Check out the York remix

Chabnormal

What’s this only 3 hours bullshit? I’m a 4 hr guy now

If Amy the gorilla signs Candyman five times into a mirror will Candyman appear, or will she just think it's another gorilla and attack the mirror

Firing that Cal professor was the right move

In elementary school I had a Charlotte Hornets hat that I loved. I have still never watched a single basketball game.

Young people just use "stepmother stuck in the dryer" porn differently. It’s a totally different vibe. Where older people feel disconnected from others because of porn, younger people feel more connected. As a Gen Z / Millennial cusper, I can vouch that people are making bookmarks and building fulfilling boners with porn, streaming sites etc. I have a friend who’s a few years younger who I became friends with solely from porn. We live in the same state but different cities so we’ve only jerked off next to eachother 3 times but we’ve been friends online for years and we’re friends before ever meeting. Young people just have totally different boundaries and norms when it comes to porn. You can look at it from a negative perspective and see the bad or you can see the good. I do think porn has done bad — spreading misinformation about MILFs' peripheral vision and dexterity, wasting time, making some people jerk off so much their dick ends up chafed. But we’ve always had that stuff. Anyone who doesn’t get good things out of their porn just shouldn’t use it as much. I admit that even as a cusper, I’ve found it beguiling and jealousy inducing the way people only 3-4 years younger than me use porn. But at least I can admit it’s part jealousy.

Dark Angel Of The Year

I've only ever seen the Racer Trash "Can-D-Man" version. Recommended. https://archive.org/details/candyman_v3_aj_012822

Joe Pera's the best! I miss his show. Drifting off does kind of fill the void though.

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

I was thinking “is Stanger not in this episode?” JUST as Rodgers asked if he was going to be in the cold open, made me do a spit take

Brix

Ben Rodgers is on the newest Improv 4 humans dropping Actionboyz nuggets. It was also the first time I've heard Hillary Mathews it's a good ep.

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

Addendum: YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE HOT SPOT!! It's so good

The Buffmaster

Had not seen this since I saw it at a friends house when I was like 12. Fun watch and a 3 hour ep to start the week. Thank you action daddyz

EasyNJ

Good scream at the end

The Candyman episode, also known as the Cybo-man episode.

Julian Neuweiler

I gonna take a wild guess before listening, that the word "smokeshow" will be utilized. In regards to Miss Madsen.

We hear you're looking for candyman bitch
