I think about the future of Zelda constantly. Making a third game with the BoTW Link and Zelda is an interesting opportunity I never considered though. If I were to think of a game mechanic for that world that they haven’t implemented yet, it would be more advanced “animal handling”. Maybe in a future game, Link could tame a wider variety of animals, creatures, and monsters, that would have more complex behaviors and c be used in puzzles thanks to the additional processing power of the Switch 2.

Looking back it's not really all that surprising that a lot of the work I was doing back then was pretty uninspired. Obviously I have way more life experience to draw from now compared to when I was 17-18, and you generally have to get through your bad work before it gets good. But I can't say that place really cultivated artistry.

The conversation about people not being interested in art hit me pretty deep, and it reminded me of when I was in a game dev program in college for 2 years (before I switched to a different major and college entirely). Now, this was 15 years ago, so maybe things have changed since then. People there didn't really talk about making games like it was making art. There was some ludology/game studies stuff, sure, but even there a lot of people still talked about games the way people typically talk about games. Never really got any further than "what do you want the player to experience?" Probably didn't help either that the program was embedded in a broader computer science program/unit. That's just not the sort of lens or place that inspires a critical attitude and artistic sensibilities in students, like the way a fine arts program would.
