Mind Yourself Among the Branches...

I genuinely don’t have much to say on Tobi-Kadachi to be honest, but there’s a handy English language interview here with MH: World’s executive director and art director, Kaname Fujioka; it details the thought process behind the design of the creature and its nomenclature.  Very cool how they really thought carefully about how the monsters live in their environs compared to a certain other more famous monster franchise.

Anyway, I knew that 飛び/ とび  tobi meant ‘to fly/ to leap’, but I had no idea what a ‘kagachi’ is. According to Fujioka, it is an archaic word for ‘snake’ from what would be the Middle Ages in the Western calendar.  Nowadays, 蛇/ へび  hebi is used for snake.

Tobi-Kadachi is probably one of the more difficult monsters I’ve adapted because it is made up of my least favourite textures in the world to depict: scales and feathers.  So I have a ton of respect for those who have far more skill and patience than I do to depict everything accurately.  I tried to reflect the simplified art-style they used in Stories.

Thank you Behemoths for allowing me the chance to try this out.  You know where to find the full-size version, right?
