I would like to speak a little about the current situation in the world and how this affects the development of the application.

Most people say they are not interested in politics. As long as politics is not interested in you.

Some programmers deliberately inject malicious code into open source packages. They call it a protest against the war, you can find out about this by entering the word "protestware" into a search engine.

This code is aimed at Russians and Belarusians.

But they do not think about the consequences, which can be dangerous for ordinary users around the world. In addition, it harms the very principle of open source.

I checked my application for packages with malicious code. Everything is fine. But I also used one of the "node-ipc" packages, which became a tool of political resistance. It's good that the community reacted quickly and all the malicious code was removed from the package.

And I was just lucky that I did not update this package when it had malicious code.

I'm glad that most people don't panic and think critically. They try to look at the situation more broadly, think about the causes and consequences.

I leave my application open source so you can trust me. And I'm glad that people still support me, not believing in stereotypes about evil Russians.

mediaChips-server v0.6.0-alpha

Added version for macOS. As well as an installer for Windows. 

Your main database will not be affected as this application is called "mediachips-server". Be careful when choosing the installation path.

Also added support for multiple databases and language selection. The translation is made only for clarity and how fast the switching works. Full translation will be closer to the full release.

I also added an animation for hovering over the card image. When there are several images in the card and they change on hover, the animation is too intrusive. What do you think of it? Write if you try.

Lifetime Activation Key for monthly subscribers ends in April

Starting April 1st, I am canceling the issuance of a lifetime key for new subscribers at the $2 and $3 support level.

Those who signed up before April 1, including March 2022, will still receive a lifetime key if they sign up within 12 months.

I decided to stop this because:

1) there is no way to configure this system to automatically track the subscription, and the number of users is constantly changing. many sign up for a couple of months.

2) I will raise the price of the app to supposedly $50 after the full release.

I will not raise the price of the monthly subscription.

I keep my promise. I already issued a lifetime key to one subscriber at the beginning of March. At the beginning of each subsequent month, I will notify users in private messages if the number of months of subscription reaches 12. And I will upgrade your activation key to a lifetime one.

I have added new media types to the application. It didn't take long as I planned it ahead of time. You can add images to the database and then filter, sort and edit. Since I just added them and was in a hurry to share the result, it is not yet possible to add meta to these media.

Soon I will add data type editing. To be able to change file extensions, icon, name, etc. You can also add your own media type.

The migration system took a lot of time, which users will not see at all, but it is necessary to manage the database and keep it up to date. Hope this works as intended.

It also took a long time to adapt watch folders to new media types. I also worked on the appearance of the New and Lost Files dialog. now it looks even cleaner.

There are still a lot of things to do to roll out the server version at least to the beta stage. For example, you need to think over the application backup system. I want backups to be created automatically each time the application is opened. They do not take up much space if only the database without images is saved.

I also want to add support for multiple databases and quickly switch between them while using the application. It should work.

PS: on the last poll, I decided that I would add a setting for meta parsing when adding new files to the database.

Since new features appear during the transfer to a new database, I decided to publish an alpha version.

I want those users who follow the development to see the progress and be able to try out new features for themselves.

So far, the differences from the last working (0.11.1-beta) are small, but they are:

- endless scrolling. pagination remains. you can switch between these two types of item display on the page. from my own experience of using it, I can say that by making infinite scrolling by default, I stopped using pagination.

- added "AND", "OR" conditions between filter rows. I hope that in the future I will be able to go further and make the conditions even more detailed so that I can filter like (A = 1 "AND" B = 1) "OR" A = 2, etc.

I also work on the design to make the application look more modern and aesthetically pleasing. Since the application will be available from any device, I adjust the appearance to fit all screens.

I am continuing to work on the self hosted version. I am currently trying to migrate my filtering system to a new database.

Unfortunately, I cannot please with new functions yet. But there are small improvements that I make during the transfer to a new database.

It will be possible to select several meta at once to add them to other meta. You can also delete multiple meta at once.

Simplifying the meta and moving towards a more minimal app design

Redesigned the meta list.  
Now there will be no division into complex and simple meta.  
Complex meta and simple meta with type "array" are now combined.  
I think you're already confused and that's why I decided to simplify the meta.

And also the application will now be more minimalistic and not so full of colors.
But you can still change the colors to your liking.

This is just a small change along the way, transferring the database to SQLite and the self-hosted version.

Development news

I continue to migrate the database from lowDB to SQLite. Along with this, I am moving the application to the server. SQLite is a more professional database.

What does this all mean for users?

In short, the next version of the application will not be released soon, but it will have a large number of changes.

I decided to change the stages of development. First, a self-hosted version of the application will be made. Then support for pictures and other files will be added. And the error of unsupported video formats will be fixed.

I had to do this because the current DB does not work well with a huge number of files. The new version of the database will allow storing more data about files, such as bit rate, codec, frames per second and any other that users need. 

Write what information about the video you would like to see?

The filtration system will also be improved. You can create almost any kind of request. I will also add support for text queries for those who know the SQL language. It is a fairly simple language and, if desired, ordinary users can write queries. But of course I will make sure that the filtering is as convenient and simple as possible for ordinary users.

With the current version of the database, I'm limited to only having one connection to it. This limited me in making video editing possible from the player window.

I have huge plans to improve the application, I would like to share all this with you, but I am afraid that I will not be able to add all this, and development may also drag on for years to come (considering how little I have done this year).

I also want to add a universal quick search for all subjects in the database. So that you don't have to navigate between pages. This is another bonus that will open with the transition to a new database.

I will share with you the intermediate results of the work. I will release test versions when possible. So far I have managed to partially migrate all the videos and am trying to display them on the page.

mediaChips added to Microsoft store

I want to share my news and thoughts with you.

First, some good news: The app has been added to the Microsoft store.

The Microsoft version does not have a parsing function for performers from adult sites.  If you buy the application from the store, then I can send you a free key for the version from the official website of the application, which has all the functions.

Also, unfortunately, it will never be added to the Apple store. Apple didn't even accept my developer profile. It has been about a month since the filing date.

Despite all of the above, I will come back to signing the application later.  Now I want to focus on developing features.

Some technical details: Although I previously wrote that the database in JSON files can support a huge amount of videos, I want to transfer it to SQLite.  With this solution, I will be sure that users will not experience a performance loss with a huge number of database records.  It is also needed to add each image to the database, and not in folders or archives as I wanted to do earlier.

Since I want to switch to the SQLite database, I began to consider a way to support two versions of the application at the same time: for desktops and for servers (self-hosted).  It turned out that for this I did not have to spend a lot of effort.  But first, I need to transfer the entire application to the self-hosted version and then connect the desktop version to it.  And it will take quite a long time. In addition, I want to add support for images and other file formats in parallel.

• Support for movies. It was before, but now the aspect ratio is added to match the DVD covers. Just create a complex meta in the settings and select the aspect ratio of 2:3. And then add that meta to the video. #41
• Sort videos by resolution (only by height).
• Storyboard view for videos and compact view for meta cards (switchable in the upper right corner).
• Filters by the number of views and the date of the last view (for videos), by the number of videos (for meta cards).
• The built-in player has buttons for fast rewinding 2 and 5 seconds back or forward.

Fixed:

• When I pressed the Escape button, the built-in player remained in full screen mode.

How would you feel about the application becoming closed source?

I ran into some difficulties submitting my app to the official stores.
They don't like that the app contains links to adult sites.
Closing the source code would probably solve this problem.
Otherwise, I'll start creating a plugin for all functions that are related to the adult content.

Storyboard video cards and a compact view of meta items

Recently, I have been mainly working on adding the application to the Microsoft store and, apparently, work there for another week. Because I will have to isolate some of the features into separate free plugins. For legal reasons.
I will try to make their use as convenient as possible. Most likely it will be something like download the archive, drop it into a folder, then press the button in the application. And that's all. Plugin code will also be available on GitHub.

I also slightly embellished the home page and downloads page.

So far, I have suspended work on adding pictures. First, I'll add support for movies. It turned out to be easier than I thought, and this is because I made a system for adding metadata.

In other words, movies are the same meta data that you can add to any video file (and in the future to any other media files, be it a picture or text). This will allow you to create a movie library to which you can add bonus content, cut scenes, etc.
I think it will be easier to use than in words.

Most likely the next release will be released in November.

Had to quickly release a new version of the app with hot fixes.

The check for the need for migration was not working correctly, which is why the initial initialization of the application did not start some functions.

Also, the meta card page did not open in some cases.

I highly recommend upgrading to this version, because in version 0.10.5 the check for updates at startup does not work and it is likely that you will not soon know about the new version. And also to avoid unforeseen mistakes.

First steps towards adding images

I've added a new page called Files where you can view your local files.

And of course you can view the images, because that's what this page was created for.

To see it, you need to enable the "Show experimental features" option in the settings, on the application tab.

So far this is slow, but I hope I can optimize it.

You can try this in version 0.10.6 and newer. Make sure to enable experimental features in settings.

I also added new statistics: the number of views and the date of the last view for the video. Each time you press the play button on video card, one view is added to the video. The number of views can be viewed while editing the video, at the top left. There is also a new widget with the most watched videos.
