HEARTBREAK HIGH EP 3 - UNCUT

HEARTBREAK HIGH EP 3 - UNCUT

Comments

One day I might carry myself with confidence and pride, but as of right now I'd just like to say: I've changed my name since, english isn't my first language and it's been a while since I wrote it (longer than it says (by like a year (feels important to note though (even though it probably isn't)))). But also, nice of you to want to read it <33 https://www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1222630/FULLTEXT02.pdf

Bobhog

No jokes but can you link your thesis? I'd very much like to read it

Luna

im AMAZED that you had knowledge of what goon was. nice one! just to confirm - goon is boxed cask wine.. and a "goon bag" is the inner bag containing the wine.

LM-Entertainment Australia

This is a really great explanation, thank you. I have an autistic son and I find it difficult to explain why it matters whether we say autistic or with autism, and this is going to be a really great template for me to borrow.

Suze

This is exactly what I was thinking when I watched it! Your thesis sounds really interesting

Suze

Loving your reactions to heartbreak high, brill. Loving the show

Clash

We see so much women on women in mainstream media because it could be synonymous with male centered media, but if we look at alternative media, for example fanfiction, there is an equal amount of men on men being enjoyed by women. It's a bit ironic actually that fag hag has become a term, but when it is the other way around it is just "normal male behaviour" (very simpel way of looking at it since fag hag has many more layers perhaps, but still an interesting divide. It's the normal (the man (white straight cis)) vs the other (the fucking rest of us). Regards from a nerd who wrote their thesis paper on homoerotic fanfiction.......

Bobhog

I’m a woman and I LOVE watching men together! So at least one person would say the stereotype is true! ❤️❤️🤣🤣

Literally Natalie

How about releasing episode three of Young Royals 😘?

Marstrand

Thank you so much for the explanation, and adding your perspective 💜 My autistic kid feels the same way and schooled me on this just a few weeks ago, which led me to Chloe’s YouTube channel. Particularly her two videos reviewing the Australian reality TV show called Love on the Spectrum.

Kim Engel

As an autistic woman my understanding is that the change comes down mainly to two things (for the autistic community specifically), which are related. For decades the people speaking for the autistic community were not autistic. They saw autism as a Very Bad Thing and thus something that a person was burdened with and ideally would not have. Like cancer. You don't say a cancerous person (well, it would mean something quite different, ha). You say a person with cancer, because the ultimate goal is for that person not to have cancer. We all wish that person was cancer free. This is how the people who originally were speaking for us feel. They have always been seeking a reason for autism to have afflicted their children and a way to cure it. To this day, there are people trying to cure autism. As the autistic community has gained a voice in the last 10-15 years, there has been a push for identity-first language. To many autistic people (myself included) the search for an autism cure feels as though my entire identity is a disease that shouldn't exist. If there was such a thing as a cure, it would erase me. So insisting on identity-first language is a reminder that autism is just how my brain works and it's intrinsic to my entire being. Without autism, I would be someone completely different. Now, that doesn't mean I (or most other autistic folks) think autism is a superpower, it's absolutely a disability that has negatively affected my life in many ways and has measurable negative effects on health and longevity, but being autistic has also positively affected my life, and the people who love me do so because of how autism has shaped me, not despite it. I fully support anyone in the autism community who chooses person-first language, however since it's something like 85% who prefer identity-first now, the most likely route to success is to start with "autistic person" and adjust if requested. Hope that clarifies the shift!

Rowan Cannell

It's so interesting because growing up, I was always taught to not speak that way. I was taught to always say "people with..." (or similar phrases) because someone is always a person first. Like I know most people I know my age who are disabled or have autism or any identity really, prefer phrases like "a person who has autism" or "a person who is deaf". But in recent years, a lot of people have been starting to use identity-first language because identity is so important to them. I don't think either is wrong or right, it's down to the person, but it's so interesting how it changes over time, because putting identity first used to be considered insulting, looking at a person as something they are instead of just a person.

Ophelia

Quinni’s actor has a strong preference for identity-first language when discussing autistic people. There’s more detailed explanations on Chloé Hayden’s YouTube channel, but essentially she prefers “autistic person” instead of “person with autism”. Much like you’d say deaf person, not “person with deafness”. Hope that helps! 💜

Kim Engel

I'd had a bad day and this made me laugh so much! At one point I was laughing so much I almost inhaled my chewing gum...lesson learned do not have chewing gum whilst watching ASWT!

Ali Laura

Yes goon is a sack wine really cheap and nasty usually used in drinking games like goon of fortune a roulette style game with a spinning clothes line

indigo

Hmmm but why can’t we see the full episode reactions anywhere if they already had done them?

Henry Riley

I'm LOVING your reactions to this... Koala chlamydia is definitely a thing btw. And I second a lot of the points made by other commenters about Malakai's story and the way Aboriginal people use the word "Black/Blak". The racism in Australia and NZ against Aboriginal people is a big big issue. Also yeah... MLM/BL books are massively popular with women not just for all the reasons listed by @Mariia B. And @Viola.S1 but also... heterosexual romance is often complicated by crappy power dynamics, toxic masculine characters, boring tropes and also... have you read how male writers write women? Nope. It's a pass from me. But honestly also as someone who came out late in life as bi I read anything queer now. I've had a whole life of trying to be enthusiastic about hetero relationships and I'm just enjoying finally freely reading and watching queer books and media and also non fiction... for example reading about section 28 has helped me really understand why I never really felt like I could be freely myself in school etc.

Jennifer Fell

Couldn't agree with you more. A huge number of the women into mm love/erotica books have voiced the same opinion in groups I'm part of. Even to do with the sex content. Women reading a mf sex scene are always comparing themselves to the women in the scene, her reactions, her responses, is she doing it "right" but if it's two men, there is nothing to compare yourself to. Plus , it's hot af 😂

Angela o grady

I think they are doing shorts for season 1-3 and then doing reactions for the rest of it as that is when most of the queer content happens.

Angela o grady

It is sooooo popular among women. I read a fair amount of mm romance and the book groups I belong to are 90% straight women ( these books are x rated for the most part !!!!) The mm authors seem to be mainly women too which I was so surprised by. A lot of it is pure rubbish but there a few female mm authors who are really really good.

Angela o grady

I love watching your reactions to this show and can't wait to see the rest. There is a LOT coming up, and as Beach gurl Bi said, the warning at the start of the next episode is so so so important as is Malakai's story arc over the rest of the season, I think they handle it so well as it's such a difficult topic to deal with in media like this, but one that definitely needs to be shown as it is a reality for too many people and hopefully having it included in a show like this forces people to recognise that and start having those difficult conversations they want to ignore. Please don't write off Cash yet, there's so much to learn about him for the viewers and Darren and I think it's handled so well, can't wait to see what you make of it. Also - his Nan rocks, I love her so much, she has some amazing one-liners!

Elspeth Clarke

Nikita Hankinson

pig latin??

annika

Pretty sure they’ve seen the show already, and are sharing the highlights only, as YouTube shorts

Kim Engel

If you go on the Patreon website (not app) you’ll see it on the Membership section

Kim Engel

Second all the above. the vulnerability shown, the not having to compare myself to the woman, and two is better than one. It never feels like an unequal power balance, and when it is it feels more chosen for sexual purposes than assumed. I do think the attraction can get close to fetishization for some and that's problematic. They show this in Sense 8 a lot.

Rachel

What's also fun to note is that lesbian or WLW folks also tend to watch gay male porn and find 2 men together attractive. It is a strange but true phenomenon

Beach gurl Bi

Key notes for this episode. A "budoo" is an aboriginal slang word for penis. When Malakai talks about being mistaken for the other "black" boy, he isn't talking about skin tone, he is referring to the other native aboriginal boy. Aboriginal people refer to each other as "blak" spelt that way. Also REALLY important for episode 4 is that there is a warning at the start of the episode for depictions of police brutality against aboriginal people. This is a major issue here in Australia, that is rarely addressed in mainstream tv. Important background for the next episode is that aboriginal people are 16.5 times more likely to die in police custody compared to non-indigenous people, 28 aboriginal people died in police custody the year this show was filmed. The police incident in the upcoming pisode is based on a real event where a white officer was found guilty of serious assault of a teenage indigenous boy in Sydney in 2020. Indigenous people often don't report police brutality due to fear of being targeted by other police officers or not being taken seriously.

Beach gurl Bi

And also it is not the same as the chlamydia that people can get, it is a different type

Grace

No not yet. I haven't been able to find the link for the discord sadly.

Makayla Hall

Yes! Nicely summarized. The lack of gender stereotypes and balanced power dynamics are a big plus for me.

Rowena_Eureka

"It felt like we shouldn't have been watching it." That's actually how I felt watching RWRB! The Paris scene was beautifully shot but it was *so* intimate that my asexual self was like "this feels like I'm intruding on something private" lol. Felt the same way with this one, too.

Kaci

I don't believe it's a stereotype anymore, especially considering that women make up the majority of the audience for most BL stories. I've often wondered why BL media is so popular among straight women, myself included. Initially, I felt conflicted about my interest, but I've since come to understand some compelling reasons: - Lack of female objectification: BL narratives focus on male-male relationships, eliminating the objectification that is usually present with female characters in mainstream media. - No default female lead: without a central female character, there's no subconscious self-comparison, and potentially fewer feelings of body insecurity, etc. - Emotionally expressive characters: BL often showcases men who are affectionate and open about their feelings, which is refreshing if you think about the traditional male portrayals in mainstream media. - Balanced power dynamics: many BL relationships avoid the skewed power dynamics that can sometimes characterize hetero couples in media. Plus, having two handsome guys in the story is kinda nice. 😉 These are just some reflections I’ve had, as well as sentiments I’ve come across online. I’m excited to hear others’ thoughts and perspectives on this topic.

Mariia B.

I totally agree with that.

Steffi K.

Yeah, most likely true as well.

Viola.S1

Hi, are you in the discord server chat? We have lots of book recs there too, in a dedicated channel. If not, it would be great to see you there!

Kim Engel

I also read there’s appeal in not comparing ourselves to women in an intimate scene and just enjoying it for what it is. Eg not comparing looks or being jealous

Kim Engel

And do they know mozzie is mosquito? 😃

Kim Engel

When can we expect the Schitts Creek reactions? Not complaining btw I love this also

Henry Riley

Also I wanna say this real quick before I get into what I was originally gonna comment. This just goes for me but if you accidentally slip up on someone's pronouns as long as it wasn't on purpose and your correct yourself most people arnt offended. When I first came out it was an adjustment and slip ups happen as long as it's an accident and not ment in a rude way it's ok. Don't you guys dare hate on reading! Anyways here are some of my recommendations for books that are either queer or YA if you don't want any recommendations just ignore this comment 😭 Solitaire - Alice Osman (set 2 years after Heartstopper) Meet cute diary - Emery Lee (it's quite a cringy but cute book) Girl in Pieces - Kathleen Glasgow (this one is a hard book. There are a lot of TWs for this books to make sure you read up on them before you read) A list of Cages - Robin Roe (also a hardish book with some TWs) Every Word You Never Said - Jordon Greene (I'm obsessed with this one I was ugly crying bc of how adorable it is. This has some homophobia in it as well) Brighter then the Moon - David Valdes They Both Die at the End - Adam Silvera (this one has a second book as well The First to Die at the End) No Boy Summer - Amy Spalding Up All Night - Laura Silverman Good Girls Guide to Murder - Holly Jackson (this is a series of books as well with 2 others) Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe - Benjamin Alire Sáenz (there is another book in this as well as a movie that came out a couple days ago in theaters I recommend you watch it once it's available elsewhere) The Miseducation of Camron Post - Emily Danforth (there is a movie for this as well) Anyways those are my recommendations in case anyone wants them they are good books and I recommend them if you are between like 16-20 some are harder to read then others.

Makayla Hall

Aussie here - had to pause and comment to say yes, Koalas do in fact have chlamydia. Not all of them, but a significant percentage of them.

Elspeth Clarke

Ok slang breakdown Budoo - Aboriginal word for penis Eetswa - Pig Latin for sweet, The eshays use a lot of pig Latin as slang. Goon - wine Cooked (He's cooked) - He's done / He's defeated (Kind of cooked) Good / Bad depending on context. So in this it would mean "Kind of sucks" (that he is stuck in slts but not on the map). Cooked can also mean drunk or high.

Nikita Hankinson

Alex is right. A lot of women actually do like the thought of two men together, just like many hetero guys like girl on girl action. I mean what's better than one hot guy? Correct, two. And it's not only the sexual component either. It's also the vulnerabilty of two men in a relationship, which is quite attractive to women. Guys in mainstrean media are oftentimes presented as a bit stoic and not very emotional while the woman is the driving emotional force but in gay media you have two guys, so at least one of them if not both must be the emotional force and that's what we are looking for and like in gay media, be it on screen, in books or even in fan fiction.

Viola.S1

you guys should start a second podcast called "you know what they say" and just go on huge stereotypical rants and dissect them while eating apples

Mads

Yes only friends is so good! I'm obsessed with it right now

Claire

great reaction as always :) i know you have so many recommendations, but it would be amazing if you watched the thai series „only friends“ once it finished airing, it‘s a hot mess.

Milana Smile

Thank you! I haven’t seen the list sorry 😂

Oliammo

you should watch 'in from the side' its a gay cute movie

Oliammo

Thanks can’t wait to watch ♥️
