Analog the big deal

I keep talking about my love for analog. Just last week, i stepped out for a shoot with no digital gear. I just carried my Medium Format and 35mm Bodies and a bunch of films.

I shoot long hours and sometimes the full weekend. This ends up with something between 1500 to 3000 images. Shooting on digital is now so easy, where you get to actually see the image before you shoot it. Ofcourse you need to compose and frame to make it worthwhile, but what i mean is, it is almost impossible to make technically poor shots with digital. To a point that it becomes boring. My shoot style is no posing so it also makes it difficult for me to curtail the number of shots. This was getting too easy too monotonous for me. The shooting part.

So i decided to try to slow down by learning analog to which i am absolutely new. Though i bought a analog 35mm 2 years ago, i realised that given my sensitive genre, i could not send my film out for developing !! It could end up getting misused ? And learning to develop at home was a bit too much for me.

So i took a step back, i bought some manual focus lenses to use on my digital cameras. These forced me to focus carefully before the shots. It was a happy balance for me. Or I thought. Very soon focusing also became very easy and we were back to square.

But recently i tried my hand at developing some films at home and i am kicked about the results even given that i did not havr perfect equipment and experience. This is encouraging enough for me to try more film now.

It is much more expensive, but the whole feeling of the unknown intrigues me. Lets see how it goes.

About the pictures above. If you look at images 1.2.3 they are fairly sharp. But the images4.5 though appear ok, you will realise the background is more in focus than her. This would never happen in a digital, but the challenges of analog are out here to see already :)

I am currently using all my patronage and more to buy gear and films and other activities that need to be done to make some photographs, so a big thank you for my patrons. I would not be as guilt free without your contributions!!
