Let’s Concur: John Lennon is a MUCH better template/influence as a singer-songwriter than Paul McCartney. He created muscular songwriting arrangements and was lyrically varied and sophisticated - two necessary traits for a serious musician. All respect to Paul, but he’s strictly a pop songwriter, and was always kind of a lightweight lyrically.

2025-09-17 13:43:03 +0000 UTCThe Viagra Boys aren’t only a great band and one of the freshest acts in rock right now, but Sebastian Murphy and his attitude and humor make me want to go back to the punk roots and not give a fuck in the healthiest sense: being myself and not pulling my belly in, for example. He has been a positive influence for me these years!

2025-09-15 03:03:03 +0000 UTCThe Mercury Music Prize is one of the most redundant awards in all of (well... British and Irish) music (anyway). A seeming alternative music body that parades itself as the anti Brit Awards and quickly capitulates to all of it's weaknesses. Mostly nominating super successful mainstream artists that are in no way alternative and regularly nominate the same artists which make it similarly stale to the BRIT Awards. They may as well just call it the British and Irish album of the year awards at this point and it would have far more use just by that alone!

2025-09-13 10:22:05 +0000 UTCGlad Chance the Rapper is seemingly back on track but "I met Kanye West, I'm never going to fail" on Ultralight Beam gotta be one of the most poorly aged bars in the past decade lmao

2025-09-13 03:06:15 +0000 UTCIt's a shame Weird Al never did more serious music during his recording career. He has a great voice and excellent composition / arrangement skills if you look at his behind the scenes videos. I'd have loved to see what he could've done with a non-comedy album.

2025-09-13 00:40:27 +0000 UTCIs Bob Dylan being taken for a ride with recent softie movie(s) about his art?

2025-09-13 00:39:46 +0000 UTCWindmill Scene is hype. In just the last 5-10 years, this wave of experimental post-punk-y sprechgesang rock from the UK has spawned so much great music from so many great bands, it’s absurd. BCNR, Maruja, Squid, English Teacher, Geordie Greep/bm, Ugly, Last Dinner Party, Wet Leg, The Orchestra For Now, HMLTD… to name a few. Plus, depending on how broadly you view the term, you could also include groups like IDLES, Fontaines D.C., etc, or even non-UK bands like Geese, Racing Mount Pleasant, Viagra Boys, or others. It feels to me like this sound is what’s pushing rock music forward (or at least keeping it interesting) right now.

2025-09-12 23:44:10 +0000 UTCThis is probably not an original take at all but Maruja are easily the most exciting and unique rock band out there today. Their ability to craft projects that flow as a whole body of work yet still produce great singles is something few can pull off that well, especially when it comes to writing 10 minutes songs that don’t grow stale at all. Also not to mention the powerful and urgent songwriting to match. It’s just amazing how these guys can make simple, raw elements of punk and jazz sound so visceral, dynamic and explosive.

2025-09-12 18:13:59 +0000 UTCThe Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has several all-timer tracks on it and it's one of the best pop albums of the decade. Might be my second favorite behind Brat

2025-09-12 11:51:19 +0000 UTCThe Benoit Blanc mystery films having song titles is really fun! (Knives Out/Radiohead, Glass Onion/The Beatles, Wake Up Dead Man/U2) What other songs do you think could make for cool movie names in that series or otherwise?

2025-09-12 02:50:51 +0000 UTCGNX and Brat are great reminders that albums don't need super congruent flows to be fantastic. If the songs are good, a more break-neck flow can be fun.

2025-09-12 00:57:57 +0000 UTCLiving Colour is one of the most underrated and consistent bands still standing from their Grammy-winning heyday. Although their discography has been scattered over the years, they never fail to drop quality music when they do and it's a shame they didn't maintain the popularity they had in the late 80s/early 90s

Herbieguy
2025-09-11 22:51:21 +0000 UTCCalling King Gizzard inconsistent is largely missing the point because the band is so prolific. Not only would most artists in their lane absolutely kill to have as many bangers in their catalog as they do, the vast majority of them who are writing songs all the time leave plenty of material on the cutting room floor. Because KG seem to be less picky than most with what they choose to put out, the misfires are more than forgivable

2025-09-11 22:46:28 +0000 UTCThe new “Best Album Cover” Grammy category will only be a great addition to the show if they disqualify use of AI and actually give credit to the person/people who made the album cover instead of only the artist who most likely is only choosing it. (Which deserves credit in its own right)
