It makes me laugh and cringe at the same time. Both at the awful simile (cringe) and equally-awful delivery (laughter).

I get that maybe its supposed to highlight the difference in the lifestyle the writer leads and the protagonist's life but it just takes me right out of it. Sticks out like brand new sticks.
