đŸ˜€ LET’S ARGUE! đŸ˜€ (May 2020 Thread)

Thank you all for the support this month! It means a lot during these tough times, and we hope y'all are staying safe. With that agreeableness out of the way, it's time once again to ARGUE. Hit us with your HOT TAKES, UNPOPULAR OPINIONS, and TOUGH QUESTIONS in the comments bellow. We'll look through all the responses this weekend. Let's go!

I know last month I said we'd try a theme over here this month, but we'll keep it general for now--the last thread was good. Maybe a topical episode next time though. Maybe even a Let's Agree; we could probably use the positivity.

In case you missed last month's episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/lets-argue-i-saw-36050827

Easy: fuck noise, marry ambient, kill drone

One day I will think of a question that I feel is worthy of asking... today is not that day

Are you or are you not wearing pants in your reviews?

Daniel Parton

I don’t know why I do this, but when I listen to songs, I do not listen to the lyrics all that much. So I basically base my likeness of a song based on their sound.

Bands like Godspeed, Set Fire to Flames, and Mogwai present a modern adaptation of long-form Western classical music. Each album carries a handful of key ideas, much like the symphonic form, and are explored through separate but connected 'movements.'

What are your thoughts on French Electro music and speicifically the genre of Electroswing? I think Caravan Palace's 2012 album "Panic" is one of the most lush and uniquely produced in the last decade and doesn’t get enough recognition.

By The Way is Red Hot Chili Peppers’s best album

FKJ’s 2019 album Ylang Ylang and the Cercle performance are the most under-talked about musical highlights of that year

Neo-Soul is the best genre of music

Buckethead is the most underrated guitarist in history

Tough question - What kind of process do you go through when developing your channel? How do you decide what segments stay or go?

Young thug is the most influential rapper of the decade

Eminem's Godzilla sounds eerily similar to Iggy Azalea's Fancy

GZA’s Liquid Swords, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx, ODB’s Return to the 36 Chambers and Ghostface’s Ironman are all more realised and arguably better than the debut Wu Tang record. The 36 chambers gives a taste of each of the MCs so you can experience each of them in a longer and more developed format! Personally, I feel that Method Man’s Tical didn’t achieve this higher status because he couldn’t better his incredible work 36 Chambers!

Jack Bayley

Just because a song becomes a meme, doesn’t mean it’s lost it’s original meaning or intent and shouldn’t be taken seriously

lowkeymatt

Awolnation is an underrated group that doesn’t get enough coverage. Sure hits like Sail and Run have been shared and memed to death, but the group has a flexibility to cover subjects such as loneliness, nostalgia, and existentialism while also mixing up their sounds from crunchy electronic noise to harmonic arpeggiated melodies.

Alex Turnage

Bob Dylan’s acoustic output is great but his music didn’t become truly phenomenal until he went electric. Albums like Blonde on Blonde are much more interesting to listen to than say, Another Side of Bob Dylan.

BlueZones

Is J Dilla's Donuts an experimental hip hop album due to the crazy and forward thinking sampling techniques that really put J Dilla out there?

Minecraft is a bad game. It’s not fun. But the music is ok.

Somebody made a Coronavirus artist account on Spotify and has 3 pandemic themed albums. https://open.spotify.com/artist/2SWe6uDmNKyKhMAnKhmjaZ?si=zSGjHQsPR1iurf6rXA8FMg No specific take on this, but just letting you know it exists.

Subterranean Homesick Alien is underrated. It’s a gorgeous track with beautiful guitar work and Thom’s impactful vocals. It feels like a starry night. People overlook it too much.

Minecraft Volume Beta is better than Minecraft Volume Alpha. While both are great, I feel like most usually choose Volume Alpha over the two because of the "nostalgia" factor. While I get that, I argue that Volume Beta's progressive, cinematic, and sometimes experimental approach to songs create for a much more interesting musical experience.

Yes I’ve always said this. Very few hit the mark. One of my favorite bands prefab sprout have a double album that is really strong initially but fades out by the last quarter. Would much prefer the first 12 tracks alone. Same with the white album. A tighter and more focused version would be killer

Brendan

Erykah Badu doesn't get nearly enough mainstream recognition, especially considering how present her influence is in modern alternative r&b.

Amaris Wilson

Likewise the internet and streaming has completely democratised taste. No longer does the radio or major labels completely control the kind of audience being generated. Now a small niche act can create a sizeable international audience without needing to cater to major trends.

Robert Furey

Because you are obviously well known for and liked for music reviews, the community thus goes nuts when you release content that isn't music related. Personally I thought it was awesome when you played smash with Zero, we like seeing other content from our music nerd.

Electronic music represents a democratisation of the role that musicians have in society. It requires very little money, education or physical abilities, opening the musical process up to a more diverse range of people than in any other time of human history.

Tough question: will you do a best album of the century list or best album of your lifetime list

CarlySortof

All double-albums are overrated. White Album, Mellon Collie, Tusk, All Eyez on Me, Songs in the Key of Life, Reflektor, Shaking the Habitual, Quadrophenia, and especially HurryUp,We'reDreaming are all admirably ambitious records that would have improved with restraint. No matter how many moments within a double-album are inspired, the total thing ends up feeling diluted, because it's just too big a canvas to cover. Take out any 30 minutes' worth of songs you like, and the end result would be 30 times better.

ehhhhh its still horrible though lol

jpegmafia is the only rapper/producer who's rapping and producing are of equal quality and compliment his artistry equally. some like mf doom and j cole are mostly recognized for their lyricism and MC skills (or at least their artistry is more defined by these traits), and kanye and tyler are great producers whose lyrics have sometimes not lived up to their production (tyler on cherry bomb, kanye on yeezus). peggy's musical appeal is owed just as much to his great lyricism as it is to his forward thinking production and they compliment each other beautifully.

At this point in the streaming age, "shameless self promotion" should be forgivable (within reason). Artists should be allowed to promote their work to their friends and family without feeling like they will be considered narcissistic. Without being able to do that, all you can really do as a recording musician is sit around and just hope you get discovered, which is pure luck. Obviously don't interrupt a funeral to tell everyone to stream your mixtape, but take some pride in your work! Hype it up! Give your audience a REASON to stream it!

Noah Mendell

In terms of raw, technical ability Nicki Minaj is a top 50 rapper

WhyDoIBother

Vampire Weekends debut album has great lyricist but whack production

"Blowout Comb" is one of the best hip hop records ever as far as I'm concerned. I absolutely would wanna see a classic review of this!

Thundercat is a terrible singer

I'm wasting my money

This is true. Not one album by them I’d rate lower than a 6. Nothing bland or bad yet, they’re dope

Brendan

Yeah I was happy to agree with him initially as I’ve enjoyed the song since it’s been released. When he flipped the switch on the ranking I was surprised, I still really love it

Brendan

What happened with 'Rag and Bone' Anthony? I'm interested to know how that song went from one of your favorites to your least favorites. Since you turned some onto the song and I've liked it ever since.

Mike Dean's 4:20 is a sonic epic the likes of which mankind has never had the privilege to experience (until now)

I honestly love having interludes and outros in a record: they give me the feeling that the artist really cared about creating an album and not just a bunch of singles. I find it disappointing that nowadays they're actually disappearing from most of the records, with Blonde being one of the fewest albums really embracing the meaning and importance of having interludes. ( Be Yourself comes to my mind as a great example of that)

let's argue: you should review more k-pop đŸ˜€đŸ˜€

Anna Narkevich

is this a hot take?? i thought everyone agreed on this

Anna Narkevich

I think, you never mentioned Portishead's 2008 album "Third" in your videos, but I think it is definitely yellow flannel material. Very interesting blend of kraut rock and industrial elements, experimental, dark and sometimes even disturbing. It is also an amazing comeback for a band, that has released nothing for 10 years beforehand. To me, its one of the best albums of the 2000s. What do you think of it?

Tristan Noel

Enter Shikari’s 2012 album A Flash Flood Of Colour is hugely underrated, some songs have a great political message behind them such as Arguing With Thermometers and Gandhi mate, Gandhi. Some of the grooves and beats on this album are also undeniably brilliant. They haven’t come anywhere near this album since in my opinion.

Fetch the bolt cutters isn’t only Fiona apples weakest record, but also comes in second place for lyrically intensive female singer songwriter albums released in the month of April. First place goes to Laura marling. I would rate FTBC even lower than you have and also pose a question, why do you think it got so much praise? I think it’s a rather shallow album beyond the lyricism which isn’t even on par with her previous efforts. Do you think it had to do with the hype? Could it be the average critics lack of perspective on this genre of experimentation leading to some thinking it’s more experimental than it really is?

Brendan

Believe in what you make buddy. If you feel like you’re copying the ones you look up to too much tap into the weird part of your brain that makes you you and shove it into your art. You can do well without being what you take inspiration from, even if it that doesn’t come with critical or commercial acclaim. I find that people often overvalue stuff they like without realizing that these peaks within music have supposedly been reached ten times over. You just need to make something unique and bam people will scream that you are that peak that no one can top, it just takes a bit of luck. (I know you were asking fantano but you sounded kind of down and I just wanted to give some words of inspiration)

Brendan

I often lose inspiration when writing music because I always feel that no matter how hard I try, I will never be better than my favorite artists (the smiths, Radiohead, Pink Floyd) at some point it seems like the pinnacle of music has already been achieved and it makes me really sad. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Flockaveli is the most influential rap album of the past 10 years. The energy and production style was the first of its kind in the mainstream and set the tone for how rap would sound later on in the decade.

It was originally a technological limitation based on the tape recording process. I think the Velvet Underground used it to amazing affect. Have a listen to something like 'Murder Mystery' , conventional panning would ruin the song!

I Hate Max

DS9 is the best Star Trek

King of Limbs is a misunderstood math rock album and should be judged along side other math rock artists like Battles or Tool rather than Radiohead's previous releases.

What do you think of the debut hobo johnson album? It seemed like you alluded to liking his earlier music in your review of his last record, and that is an album that has gotten tons of hate on sites like RYM. I personally like a lot of elements of the record sonically but I think some of his romantic delusions are hard to get past and I get why people dont like it, as I initially responded very negatively to the viral peach scone performance the same way a lot of people did, but his unique fusion of styles eventually grew on me

Austin Gaines

Robbie Williams failing to break the American market/charts wasn’t down to his music but the record label. His success in the UK, Europe, Oceania and South America show that he is a global pop star, but the marketing of the albums was so poor.

Everywhere At The End Of Time by The Caretaker is one of the most depressing, scary and ingenious set of albums of the past decade. It’s a shame it doesn’t get more attention.

Would or did you consider reviewing the Eurovision every once a year, give your opinions on the songs and who should/might win like you do with the grammys?

You would like Dance Gavin Dance if they were called Dance Melon Dance.

In response to your Music Meme Vol 3: The point of Guitar Hero and Rock Band sans 3 for that matter is not to teach you to play real guitar, it's to have a fun and engaging rhythm game experience. People don't play DDR because they expect it to teach them to dance, they do it to just have a good time. Guitar playing can also be fun and even more rewarding, however just comparing a real instrument to the game you can already see the massive gaps in effort required just to begin to get fulfillment out of it. Not to mention Guitar Hero has been a major gateway to learning guitar and also discovering music otherwise unsought.

Benjamin Lisboa

i'd say it's usually postponed because they can't tour off of the music

Not understanding the language in a song can make it better.

8D music is shit. BUT the feeling of a track or a sound moving through the headphones if correctly used can be very interesting and add/improve a sort of psychedelic vibe. More producers should try to implement it in their music, if the song requires it, obviously

Hardcore records should never exceed the 30 minute mark.

At risk of sounding like that guy who adds "post" before every genre to sound smarter. JPEGMAFIA is one of the first examples as to what post-trap. He uses lots of trap tropes: minimalist beats, a similar vocal style, etc. But he adds on tons of new sounds that don't exist in trap.

Andrew Adomaitis

Hair Metal musicians in the 80's were just as debauched and hedonistic as the rappers grabbing headlines today, only they were given more of a pass because of their race.

I Get Wet is a top 10 album of the 2000's but the general public is too scared to admit it

Logan Colburn

Artists that had new music coming out shouldn’t have postponed albums due to Covid-19. People would have listened to albums they maybe wouldn’t have if things were normal because there’s nothing else to do!

Thoughts on 2019 Guy, the cr1tikal song?

plainLain

How come we havent had a patreon only let's agree yet?

Adam mezzarone

Rhythm games such as Guitar Hero have an entirely separate appeal and requires a separate (if sometimes similar) skill-set compared to 'real instruments' and the argument that telling players they should just 'learn a real instrument' ignores that a) a large portion of them already know how to play a real instrument b) It still requires a lot of skill and practice to get good anyways c) It's just another way of enjoying music.

TonicOri

New Age music is undoubtedly cheesy a lot of the time, but there is also more depth to it than people realize. Some of the best electronic and ambient music of the 70s and 80s was made by New Age artists, and I think a lot of great albums are overlooked, because of the genre tag being associated with Yanni and Enya. (Who actually have some decent tracks of their own.)

Varg Vikernes is one of the only musicians in all of music to have such a massive ego and back it up with his creative musical output and prowess. Truly revolutionized extreme music as well as experimental ambient music while he had the biggest ego we’ve ever seen.

Tyler Craig

Logic’s incredible true story has and continues to age well. Songs like Run it and Stainless are some of the best in his discography. If you reviewed the album today I believe you would have rated it higher

The "Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-Fil-A" line on JIK isn't meant to be taken seriously. That's just Kanye's sense of humor, and I thought that would've been obvious to Ye's fans at this point. It shows that he isn't taking himself or the album's theme too seriously, which makes the whole LP significantly easier to enjoy

Caden Meyer

Thoughts on the band Café Tacvba?

I prefer the vibe and instrumentation of Plastic Beach, but Demon Days has a much better ending. The last three tracks flow together so well and create such a surreal and amazing conclusion. Plastic Beach just kind of slowly falls asleep. It's pretty the whole time, but it just isn't as memorable or exciting.

K-pop fangirls are way worst than American boy band fangirls just by their obnoxious prevalence online. At least back in the day BB fans would keep their love for them on their walls, on their shows & between themselves.

The Lebron James of Guzzling Bratwurst Dick The Cock Johnson

Purity Ring’s recent output is just as good as their first album, any hate is coming from the fact that their original sound has been co-opted and iterated on by so many other groups that their own evolution feels more like they’re treading water.

Alex McKee

100 Gecs sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks

Stage presence: Nicholas Sadler > Alexis Marshall

Dub Techno is quite underappreciated. The genre is genuinely hypnotic, with the best producers under the genre combining incredible atmospheres with strange and otherworldly textures. When it comes to techno, a lot of music fans don't seem to look for anything past Ambient Techno when there is a whole new world to be discovered! (Some recommendations in the genre from the past decade: Stillpoint by Purl, Liumin by Deepchord presents Echospace, Drawn and Quartered by Deadbeat, and of course Luxury Problems by Andy Stott).

Shumma12

Cherry Bomb in the overall context of Tyler’s work has aged greatly. When it was first released even by many fans like myself it was hated, because it wasn’t what anyone expected. Now looking back at the production of the majority of the album, you can see that kind of dirty production growing in popularity, and lyrically it was his most bold release up to date. Give it a seven, you dirty melon.

Just a question: are you still playing Super Smash Bros., or have you quit? I remember you used to post sick videos of your Pac-Man when Ultimate came out and even back in the days of Smash 4, but I haven’t seen you post about it in quite some time. Did you just stop posting about it? Or did you just stop playing? I know how time-consuming it can be and am just wondering if it ended up taking too much of your time.

tryhard

Hard panning entire instrument-sections to the left/right throughout the 60s and 70s rarely improved songs, but usually worsened them. Some remastered Beatles (and others) songs to this day can give you a headache when listening on headphones..

Mees

Chinese Democracy is vastly underrated. The album's 15-year gestation period coupled with ongoing criticisms that Axl Rose justifiably received throughout the 90s led most people to dismiss it, but the songwriting is impeccable and Axl sounds better than ever throughout the album

A segment where you go over and reccomend non-current albums you think are good that you may have just discovered or didn't get a chance to review at the time would be a great idea! Not even necessarily in depth reviews, but just like a grab bag of albums you've stumbled upon that you'd like to recommend every couple months or so

I forgot to mention I'm specifically speaking with the afro-disco beats of many 70s funk and soul musicians like Donald Byrd and Idris Muhammad in mind :)

Tough question: do you shampoo your scalp?

Disco gets too much criticism for how much it helped bridge multi-cultural music into popular use. Just as jazz once was "taboo", the rhythms of disco which led to soulful beats of today's popular music were tied to suppressed cultures for decades before seeing the light of day. One should recognize that a large part of popularizing these rhythms ripped them away from their cultural roots, but I'm thankful we have them to use today, music wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable :)

What would you say differentiates an EP from a Mini-Album today? Though not always consistent, to me it's the emphasis on sequencing that makes it a mini-album, and I feel like some EP's would be considered mini-albums if they were released today, like Broken by NIN or The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga.

Vampire Weekends debut album has great lyricist but whack product

DS9 has the best Star Trek theme.

Office Policy

I feel like I agree more with your more controversial reviews(ex. Fiona fetch the bolt cutter, kanye MBDF) as a lot of people tend to be bias or buy into the hype way too much instead of trying to look at more objectively.

For albums like "a Crow Looked at me"...Do you only say it's good on the basis that the emotion, subject matter and performance is raw/authentic? What I mean is... If that album wasn't about the death of his wife, would you still have rated it the same? Let's say it was the same writing quality, production quality. Etc. But the whole time he just sang about day to day activities. I know you will probably say, context, context, context, but I'm still curious.

Is it valid to try to apply familiar genre labels from English/Western music to other music, especially from the Eastern world? I find it hard to position Arabic music for example strictly into niches such as Rock, Hip Hop, Pop and such. Some songs are more obvious than others of course but then you have some that fit nowhere, notably classic Arabic singers such as Fairuz and Oum Koulthoum.

Robojim

Out of Time is an extremely overrated R.E.M. album, it's a very good album but he would be beaten by Automatic, Murmur, Document, Lifes Rich Peagent, New Adventures in Hi-Fi (which is an extremely underrated rock album) and more. Also cheers from Italy, I'm probably one of the few people that follows you in this country, thanks for letting me discover a lot of music that I probably would never have discovered.

Absolutely! One of the most influential of the time, but almost never talked about. Todd in the Shadows just did a great analysis of “Oh Yeah” and I think it shows their talent pretty clearly

Julian Dene

Danzig has finally lost his chance for a redemption arc with the “Sings Elvis” album. Easily the worst work he’s done, the album was a culmination of years of work, showing, like his film Verotika, that he doesn’t have the capability to create new content within the theme of his character. While artist like Alice Cooper consistently changed their musical style and evolved with their image, Danzig is still stuck thinking he’s an evil sex god and won’t live that down even if it would improve his art.

Julian Dene

What are your top 5 EPs of the 2010s?

Owen W

I think Mark Linkous/Sparklehorse work and legacy is very underrated in the music community. Records such "It's a wonderful life" and "Good morning spider" should be considered on the same level of ITAOTS or the glow pt.2 in terms of songwriting and experimentation with lofi-sh sounds but it seems like everyone forgets or doesn't know about them

Best teeth in the game - regular or electric toothbrush?

Billy Woods has one of the most impressive album runs of the 2010s. From "History Will Absolve Me" all the way to "Terror Management". He always changes things up and is one of the most important rappers currently. I predict his influence will grow greatly as the years pass.

Omar AlHashmi

ATCQ is overall better than Digable Planets, but "Blowout Comb" is better than any album Tribe has put out. It's underrated and often gets passed over when looking at the landscape of 90's jazz rap. The grooves go HARD front to back!! Deserves a classic review tbh

wfflpff

Avey Tare had an interview the other week talking about how this is a boom or bust time for people trying their hand at making music saying “I think now is as creative or not-creative as any other time.” Which do you see the pandemic acting as?

Chris Hickson

The VU & Nico album is more influential than any other Beatles album

Listening to Re-Master is much more enjoyable when done properly and faithfully to the original. I guess an example I could think of is Master of Puppets by Metalicca. It makes a huge difference in sound quality. I guess something about the old methods of recording also packs less of a punch when we have the recording quality and abilities that we have nowadays to compare these old songs too. Sometimes you listen to an old song and for some reason it sounds so quiet in the mix. Am I mistaken? Also I am not trying to say that older music is less artistically viable by virtue of it being quieter on occasion. It's just a product of it's time.

Final Fantasy VII remake was really disappointing. It was super linear and tedious. Way too much filler. It looked pretty, but the developers pretty much phoned in everything else. Convinced it was a just a cash grab banking on nostalgia. And so far, that last piece is the only reason anyone likes it. B- at best.

Trevor Young

Agreed. The only thing that kinda sucks about that is the "wrong generation" crowd will latch onto this pretty soon.

Technique is an extremely underrated New Order album. While it is praised almost as much as the New Order essentials (PC&L, Low Life etc.), In my opinion Technique is up there with one of their best. The production is some of their best and “Round & Round” is easily one of their best songs ever.

Riley Schmedeman

Real is one of the best songs on good kid, m.A.A.d city, I love both Kendrick’s performance and Anna Wise’s feature on the track. Furthermore, I think the voicemail at the end from Kendrick’s parents is one of the most emotionally compelling moments on the entire album. I understand people finding the song irritating, but I think it deserves far more credit than it gets.

Hidden tracks on EPs (looking at you Tool) are absurd and shouldn't exist.

Yello is an underrated electronic act and it's a shame they're just pigeonholed into the "oh yeah" people.

carsausage

Rebirth by Lil Wayne is a great example of why not every album has to be listened to from start to finish. Prom Queen, Drop the World and Ground Zero are good tracks but don't justify having to listen to the rest of the tracklist.

music critics like to play down how much influence they have with their scores and reviews but secretly they love it.
