Apologies now for the length of this, but I have a lot of big feelings about this movie, so I'm really excited and also very nervous, lol. (No spoilers!) I was crushed by how harsh critics were about HIM; I walked out of the midnight screening vibrating with how badly I needed to talk to people about it. I was thrilled over a sports horror movie, and I was never disappointed. I saw people say this was a movie about hero worship, and it's really not. There's only a tiny bit of that, but what HIM explores are the sacrifices athletes make, particularly in contact sports like football and the damange done physically and mentally, but most importantly here, it's a rumination on the pressures and expectations on high-profile athletes. What do those expectations (from fans, sports commentators, family, friends, strangers, etc) feel like for the ones considered the greatest of all time? The GOATs? What does that mean for the GOAT that's been at the top and everyone is now whispering is on his way out and not what he once was? What does that mean for the new kid, the college GOAT who everyone is expecting to "replace" the old guard and how do those pressures and expectations negatively affect someone? We as fans mostly see the glory and victory, but there's so many other aspects to being "the best" and what people demand from you, your life, and your abilities as an athlete. Especially when choices are made for you. On top of everything HIM explores through a bizarre, psychological horror lens, it also features outstanding performances by Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Wither. As always, whether my opinions on a movie line up with theirs or not, I'm eager to see what Halle and Alison have to say about HIM.

I did not care for this movie and was disappointed coming from the trailer. Not because of the obvious culturally relevant content, but in 2025 I'm so tired and I can't have movies be vague art installations.
