The Rice Shower part in the OP is actually based on Rice Shower's part in a JRA Commercial series from the early 2010s (that you can actually find on youtube, by simply searching "JRA the winner")
The Rice Shower ED is in fact Rice Shower's (first?) solo song, Sasayaka na Inori - A little Prayer.
After this Season Rice is generally paired with Haru Urara. The pessimistic Uma that was hated for winning and the optimistic Uma that was loved for losing make for a great pairing.
Rice has the dagger because she's the Black Assassin. Though she's not the only Uma that (semi-)canonically has a weapon. Zenno Rob Roy has a Sword, Grass Wonder has a Naginata, Durandal has a Sword (she better, she's named after the second most legendary sword in history/mythology after all), Symboli Kris S can somehow summon a kind of ethereal Sniper Rifle, Taiki Shuttle has a Colt, etc
One thing to add about Rice that doesn't appear in the Anime: Rice Shower's IRL story is both happier and even sadder than in Uma Musume. If you are planning to watch the mini-documentaries by Pyrrhixz about the different Umas, don't read the rest of this paragraph. You might recall that both of Rice's "assassinations" were in Kyoto. Two years after the win against McQueen, Rice would finally win his third G1 - again the Teno Sho Spring, again in Kyoto. But this time, Rice's victory was greeted with cheers, applause and praise. Because this was shortly after the Great Hanshin Earthquake, with Japan at the edge of basically a national collective depression, after thousands had died, tens of thousands had been injured, and hundreds of thousands displaced. And in this time, Rice Shower came to Kyoto like a Knight in shining black armor, and won gloriously - a victory that gave people hope. He finally had become a hero in the public's eyes. And with this status as a Hero came growing public support, which is why he wasn't retired shortly afterwards, as was originally planned. He was instead voted into the Takarazuka Kinen as the vote leader. And as the Hanshin Racecourse was still severely damaged from the aforementioned Earthquake, the Race was moved to Kyoto. So Rice took to Kyoto Racecourse once more, to the Racecourse where people had booed him, booed him again, and then cheered him. What nobody expected at the time, and what truly connects Rice Shower more than any other horse to Kyoto - despite him not being from the area - was, that soon, in Kyoto people would have to mourn him. Because Rice Shower never finished the Takarazuka Kinen. He severely fractured his leg and fell (the scene is very heavy to watch, so i'd recommend not going looking for it) basically face first, with his jockey being thrown off as well. He was so severely injured that he couldn't even be moved off the Racetrack for treatment. So a Curtain had to be placed in front of him, and on the very same Racetrack that had made him a heel and a hero, he was euthanized at just six years old - roughly twenty in human age.
I would argue that Rice became the Protagonist for one Episode, while Turbo is the Deuteragonist.
I would argue that Season 1 is definitely the weakest part of Uma Musume - but that's basically comparing a very solid meal in a three star restaurant to the best meal in a five star restaurant. It's still very good, but gets overshadowed by the amazing thing. To continue this comparison i'd argue that Season 3 is basically a very good meal in a four star restaurant that could be a five star restaurant, if the steak was slightly more in point with its timing and there was slightly more sauce and slightly less veggies. Basically Season 3 is imo not quite as good as Season 2, as some of the choices of how to adapt the story are worthy of some criticism, and the pacing has some problems, but it's still noticeably better than Season 1 (that was already good) imo. Though afaik one of the reasons S3 has these problems is because the Lead Writer was basically double booked - with S3 that is technically an external project, and the ONA Road to the Top - and the quality of their writing is VERY noticeable in RttT. RttT is amazing and has imo the most complex character CyGames has ever put into any Uma Musume Anime.

Rice often gets paired with Haru Urara in ingame events. makes for some very cute events
also IRL spoilers, but IRL Rice Shower DID in fact win another race to cheers and chants, which unfortunately was skipped by the anime

This season pretty much cemented what Cygames wanted to convey for the Uma Musume anime. It's about showcasing what athletes may face in their careers, with a horse racing flavor.
The first season was them testing the waters. It was your typical underdog story with cute girls doing cute things. While we still get some cute moments, they pivoted to a more serious sports esque anime. The second season was about how devastating an injury can affect an athlete. The third season is spoilers. Then, Road to the Top and Beginning of the New Era explore complex personal hurdles like survivor's guilt and imposter syndrome. And finally, there's the prequel Cinderella Gray, where they're attempting what they did with season one, a grassroots athlete taking on a larger, global stage, but they're combining everything they learned from the other series and making it even better.
I came to watch this series out of pure morbid curiosity, and I ended up watching one of the best sports anime I've seen in a long time. I've been watching you guys from youtube for other series like re:zero and steins gate and I was so glad y'all went with release order for uma musume instead of immediately joining the cinderella gray bandwagon. Can't wait for more!
