Pic 33: Testing hair and "black dress" options

The following picture are all flawed in one way or another. This is on purpose as I am testing hair and dress options.  As you can see in the background, I am playing with the living room. I learned from Hopepunk City, that Ariane looks better against a dark turquoise colored wall than a dark red wall.  This is because the opposite of skin tone is turquoise.  Bottom line is I am still playing with the colors.

So this is the black dress and hair style of the current version of Date Ariane.  For each hair and outfit, I am doing two pictures. One standing and lit from the back, and one sitting and lit from the front. Dresses and skirts don't handle sitting poses very well.  While the dress looks great on the left, in a sitting pose it looks like it is clipping through her leg and you can see right up her skirt.  Sometimes that's a feature.

This second dress is a bit more daring.  It might be fun as an evening gown, but I can't help think it looks like a negligee.  The corners of the bottom of the skirt are individually poseable so the sitting pose doesn't look bad, except the back of the dress is clipping with the chair.

The hair style is the same as I used in Ariane in Paradise and I still think it looks really good.  If I decide to use an old style again, this might be my first choice.

This is an interesting dress because the skirt and top are separate items. In fact the top is the spaghetti strap top from last week, and the pleated skirt is from a school girl uniform. It still has the problems with sitting that the others do.

I am thinking of using this in the dress shop game, since the top and skirt are separate and can be textured to any color easily.  Using this as the dress throughout the game would mean whatever dress you buy in the dress shop could be worn everywhere.  I could just recolor the dress.

The hair here is the hair used in parts 1, 4, and 5 of Rachel Meets Ariane and all of Hopepunk City.  The biggest flaw is the left and right shoulder parts do not rest flat on the shoulder without clipping.  Adjusting for that resulted in quite a few continuity errors in HC.

Another dress option I could go is NOT a dress.  This is outfit #3 from last week but with the less revealing top of #2, and a nice black satin jacket thrown over it.  The biggest advantage is that the pants fit perfectly while sitting, so I don't have to adjust anything.

The hair is the new hair I am considering for the game, but in these pictures you can see it's biggest flaw and it's biggest strength.  The left picture shows harsh shadows cast on the face with the poor lighting. There are similar shadows with all the hair styles, but this one is the worst.  If I stick with this hair I am going to have to be super picky about the lighting I use to avoid the harsh shadows.

The right picture shows the hair's advantage: the shininess of the hair in good lighting makes the hair more realistic looking than the others. If I decide to pick another hair, I am going to have to play with the textures to match this look.

The final "dress" is the same jacket as picture 4, but colored blue instead of black.  It also doesn't have a top underneath, compensating by closing the top up a little. Wearing a jacket with no shirt might make dancing fun.

The hair used here is the fanciest of the hairstyles.  It was previously used in Rachel Meets Ariane part 3 where Ariane poses for pictures for Rachel. It has the same disadvantage as the third hairstyle in that the front shoulder fringes have to constantly be adjusted.  On the other hand in the poorly lit left, there are very few odd face shadows.

So what do you think? What dress and hairstyle do you think looks the best?

The hair in pics 1 and 3 are my favorites and feel the most like Ariane to me. I don't notice any issues with them. I like the first dress. Maybe you can adjust the camera angles, Ariane's legs, or add a shadow in the seated pose? Also, Ariane in the jacket is badass.

I have to agree with the posters who said you should definitely stick with a dress, not pants, for those scenes. Not least because "you can see right up her skirt. Sometimes that's a feature." :-D As for which of the dresses, I think I like the third one best. No real opinion on the hair. Also, you talking about clipping and lighting issues and the amount of work you put in to fix them has given me a whole new appreciation for the work you put into your games.

I never thought of 5 as the casual outfit. It would work well.

If I were to vote on the top three hairstyles ( in order of preference) it would be #2, then # 1 and #5 as third choice. I like dress #2 followed by a close second of #3 for the formal look and # 5 as the casual look. #2 is a little too sexy to greet someone on a first date, however #5 would be perfect for this. #2 would be great for going out on the town later in the evening

Dress 2 hands down, same for the hairstyle, even though it's not 'classic' Ariane. The lighting for outfit 4 makes the hair look a bit grey. No bad thing, just saying.

I'd say either 2 or 5 work well for the hairstyle. They both feel suitably like Ariane, and are both fancy enough for a night on the town. As far as the actual dress, the original gets the "it ain't broke" vote. That said, I do rather like dress 2 as well, just for the more daring vibe it offers. I'd also wager it would struggle a bit with the rigors of club dancing, too, and could offer some fun moments at the club, among other places. I also like the teasing nature of the jacket in option 5. It really feels like a "I'm dressed up but not taking myself too seriously" option, and I rather like that vibe. I do have to second what Mytilene said regarding the pants, though. Pants are problematic with certain events. To offer an idea here, it may be worth considering two different options for outfit, maybe tied to whether you've kept the date classy or taken it in a bit more wild direction. I realize that definitely adds workload, in that renders for some events that would cross over would have to be rendered with both outfits, but it may also open doors to new events and locations tied to certain outfits and the nature of the date. It would allow you to capitalize on the original classy vs. wild dynamic you had going in Date Ariane in different ways than just modernizing the game. Also, from your comment on outfit 3, in that you could buy the dress and she'd wear it for the date: I like the idea, but does it absolutely have to be the old memory game? Maybe there's a way to redesign the mini-game to work with a dress vs separate skirt and top, though I'm not entirely sure how that would look. Maybe pairing the dress with appropriate lingerie?

I'm leaning towards hairstyles 2 and 3, but especially 2. Looks very fancy but still looks like herself - 5 looks a little off for some reason. Regarding the outfit, I think any of the 3 dresses are good, but I don't really like the idea of replacing the dress with pants+jacket. She's already wearing shirt and pants casually, it doesn't take advantage of her going commando and it would probably not fit some of the events like the beach walk and naked acrobatics.
