Date Ariane returns to the web browser!

There is a debate that I see both sides of: Renpy stand alone games vs. Online HTML games.

Stand alone games are bigger and faster and can have more features.  Online games can be played on any device with a browser, so you don't have to make separate Windows, MAC, Linux, and Android versions.

Well it may not be so hard to decide in the near future. The latest version of Renpy released yesterday (7.3) contains a way to convert Renpy games to the web.  It's called RenPyWeb, and I'm testing it online and it works great!

Does this mean soon there will be a way to play Date Ariane again online? Well yes there is!
Date Ariane Online on Newgrounds

Hopefully I can bring the other games online, too, but I need to test this.

There are a couple of hurdles: 1. I need a host.  I managed to get this uploaded to newgrounds.  The game has to download to the browser and at 200MB, it will likely take a while, especially if your internet connection is slow.

2.  I am going to have to change the games to make it faster online, such as make the pictures smaller, and reduce or eliminate sound and music.  Download versions are always going to be better for that reason.  I used a 2016 version here that uses the rerendered pictures, but not HD.

Test it out, tell me if there are problems. I'm not going to post the link everywhere until I know it works for most people.

ETA: This seems to be a PC only solution. IOS and Android browsers will not run it.  Well maybe in the future as mobile browsers get more sophisticated and RenpyWeb gets less sophisticated, eventually it will work everywhere.

I have, it is on my things to do list.

Have you ever thought of updating this and Something's in the Air to include the option to play as a fem MC?

It does not seem to work on IOS devices. Neither my ipad or Iphone, both with the latest software, can run it. I just get the "This submission is not compatible with your device" error. Same error on my Android tablet in both Chrome and Firefox. So not the perfect solution I was hoping for, but definite progress.

I played through a couple times - briefly - and it seemed to work OK. I didn’t find the load times oppressive, but I’m on a PC, not a tablet or a phone, and have decent internet speed. Personally, I MUCH prefer your games as d/l. Especially if it means losing visual quality and the sound. But I understand trying to reach a wider audience, and it's certainly EASIER to just play it in browser. On a somewhat-related topic: Nice work on the Adventure Creator-to-Renpy conversion for Tora's older "Elsa-verse" games. That was a pleasant surprise. While I have NO problem playing those as HTML games, I will say that the easier / extra save options are a HUGE plus. And, again, anything that makes the games more accessible to people is welcome.
