The history of these four characters is kind of a long one. So, back in 2012 they started out as a bunch of Little Big Planet costumes my brother and I made (major love in your direction if you played those games) and they each correspond to a symbol on the controller, hence their names
Cross (X) Mellow (Circles being a mellow shape O) Trigon (Triangle) and Cudon (Cube or Square)
So you can probably imagine that, seeing as they were constrained by the designs of the sack people characters in those games, they looked quite a bit different. Except Cross he's still kinda similar to his original design. As for the others...
Mellow's redesign originated from a one off background character in a short comic series I did a while ago. Said extra was only seen on a family tree and said to be a characters great-great grandfather. I did end up liking how they looked (even though it was only a bust) so I repurposed it for Mellow.
Trigon's redesign was a result of the fact that the color palette for his LBP costume was made up of blues and purples, and that I just got better at drawing dragon characters.
Cudon, well, I actually just forgot what species he was. See, those LBP costumes were made like a decade ago, and the save data wasn’t available since we lost our old PS3 in a move. So I tried to remember what he looked like and combined that with making him a wing-eared dog, a fictional species in some of my character universes. My brother says he might have been a hamster. Idk I think this newer design looks hamster-ish.
So 2 years go by and I decide I want to remake that "I'll take off my clothes to reduce my body heat" test comic I made and that kinda leads me to redesigning these guys. Man I did not realize how unappealing they used to look. General improvement with digital art aside, their colors were so ugly and proportions so strange that I kind of subconsciously turned myself off from drawing them (which I hadn’t done since November 2021 for Trigon and Cudon, and January 2021 for Cross and Mellow).
Needless to say, I think i'll be drawing these four a lot more from now on.
Oh hey, I guess this year is their 10th anniversary, thats a crazy coincidence.
