This will now be our fifth Kdrama, and out of all the shows we’ve watched, this one has been recommended the most. Familia has called it a masterpiece and we're excited to finally find out why. and yes, we have our tissues prepared and are ready for whatever comes our way! 🤧 we have been warned of how emotional this Kdrama is 😅

The phrase “폭싹 속았수다” literally means “I was completely fooled.” However, this is actually a Jeju dialect expression, and its true meaning is closer to “Thank you for your hard work.” For your information, even Koreans can't understand the Jeju dialect lol The English title of this drama is related to an English proverb: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Its literal meaning is “If life gives you sour lemons, make lemonade,” and it conveys the idea of turning difficult situations or unfavorable conditions into something positive. In Jeju, when visiting a restaurant, people can take tangerines for free at the counter after paying for a meal. Jeju tangerines are famous, which inspired the English title. Instead of the original proverb, the title was adapted to “When Life Gives You Tangerines.” Sumbyeong = An occupational disease that occurs among haenyeo (female divers), medically similar to decompression sickness. Cause: Repeated diving causes pressure changes, leading to bubbles forming in the blood vessels and lungs. Symptoms: Fatigue, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and neurological disorders. Gwang-rye: A haenyeo who died of sumbyeong at the age of 29. Within haenyeo society, it was feared. Gwang-rye said she would not die because she could not leave Aesoon behind. There is also a scene where a gut (shamanic ritual) is performed in an attempt at healing and consolation. The setting of this drama begins in the 1960s. In the early dialogue, it is explained that the Korean War took place in 1950, and Gwangrye and her friend came to Jeju as refugees. At that time, an elderly haenyeo (female diver) taught them how to dive, and every day they risked their lives diving into the sea just to make a living. Gwangrye’s reluctance to share abalone with the elderly haenyeo, who later developed “sumbyeong” (diving-related illness), might seem harsh at first. However, Gwangrye had three children and a husband without a job, so she felt she had to manage everything on her own. That’s why she often comes across as stubborn and assertive in dealing with the people around her. When Gwangrae gives Ae-soon abalone and leaves her final words, she also does something special to her fingernails—she applies a peach blossom dye, making a kind of nail color. I’ve tried it a few times as a child. The process involves crushing peach leaves, applying them to the nails, letting them sit, and after about an hour, the nails turn a deep pink. Later, when Gwangrae has passed and Ae-soon and Gwan-sik are in the cabbage field, Gwangrae’s words are remembered: "Just wait and see. As the flower dye fades from your fingernails, the living will forget and carry on. Just as fingernails grow, new days rush in. How could you not forget?" The meaning is that grief fades with time, and the force of life pushes us to eventually forget. Gwangrae seemed concerned about the surviving Ae-soon, wanting to tell her to keep living in any way she could. 2025-09-20 04:07:42 +0000 UTCi'm so excited for the next episode and i'm glad you're loving it so far!! this is one of my fav dramas of all time - i feel like more than a romantic love story, it's like a love story about generations of a family who are just doing their best for the next generation and that's what makes it so touching for anyone who watches it. like how aesun's mom went through so much hardship diving with the hopes that aesun can have a better future (as a scholar/teacher) instead of diving. especially as daughters in an asian family, both my mom and i related to the characters in this story through our lived experiences. what i love too is that they use a lot of pop culture references/real life events of its time so definitely look out for those!! wanted to add that when the mom was dying, the other ladies weren't really fighting with her. mom was sick because of her work, and they wanted to tell her not to work anymore and that they'll take care of her so that she can rest. mom is stubborn (not in a bad way) and she doesn't like "free handouts" - she would rather work for it herself, so aesun burned her mom's diving clothes to force her not to work anymore in the hopes that she will live longer.
